Obituary: Jeryl (Jerry) Arlen Winn, age 78, departed this life on , 23, 2015 at the Community Hospice of Texas in the Texas Arlington Memorial Hospital, in Arlington, Texas. Jerry was born on 15, 1936 to the late Howard and Bobbie Winn of Tyler, Texas. Jerry graduated from John Tyler High School in Tyler, Texas and later attended Tyler Junior and Arlington State (now known as the University of Texas at Arlington). Jerry subsequently moved to the Dallas area and began his career as an electro-mechanical draftsman/designer for various defense contractors across the nation. It was in Dallas where Jerry met and married Frances Hopcus, his wife of nearly 50 years. In the early years of their marriage, Jerry began to invest in, manage, and finance real estate, and it was this avocation that eventually grew to become his lifes work. For fun, Jerry and Fran loved to travel. Frans employment with American Airlines enabled them to take extensive trips throughout the United States, Mexico, and Europe, which they both enjoyed immensely. Jerry was an avid animal lover. One of his greatest joys over the years was raising and nurturing an incalculable number of raccoons and squirrels in his and Frans terraced, wooded backyard. As a beloved uncle to a surprising number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, Jerry was known to frequently delight them (and any other children he encountered) by presenting them with an unexpected gift of a crisp $2 bill. Although Jerrys life had its share of ups and downs, he typically found a way to sort things out and then use his experiences to help others. Following his own personal struggle (and ultimate victory) with alcohol addiction, he spent an enormous amount of time and took considerable pride in very quietly but effectively sponsoring, mentoring, counseling, and aiding countless recovering alcoholics as they sought sobriety and attempted to re-establish their lives. He also was a frequent visitor and contributor to Mission Arlington and the Union Gospel Mission of Tarrant . Jerry was a kind-hearted, generous, and unique individual who lived life on his own terms by virtue of his conservative upbringing and his analytical/engineering mindset and background. He is dearly loved and will be missed tremendously by his family, friends, and colleagues. Jerry is survived by his loving wife, Frances Winn, of Arlington, TX; his brother, Carroll B. Winn, and wife Kay of Grapevine, TX; his cousin, Kenneth Lillard, and wife Isela of Grand Prairie, TX; his uncle, Bud Smith of Redlands, CA; his nephew, Kelly Winn, and family of Frisco, TX; his niece, Courtney Winn Love, and family of Dallas, TX; his numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, cousins, and their respective families; and his many beloved friends and colleagues. • Visitation will be held at Moore (1219 North Davis Drive) in Arlington, TX on , 1, 2015 form 1:00 to 3:00 pm. Visitation will be , 29, 2010 from 5:30-7:30 pm at Riverpointe Baptist Church, 700 Gladstell, Conroe, TX 77304. Glenn was born 5, 1927 in Oil City, Louisiana. He was the youngest son of Herbert and Alpha Winn. His siblings were Vernon Winn, Donald Winn and Margaret Winn Love. He grew up in Marshall, Texas. Glenn met the love of his life, Mae Evelyn Dominey, while they were students at East Texas Baptist . married on 29, 1948. Glenn and Mae had three children, Glenn Loren Winn, Jr. and Deirdre Elise Winn both who preceded him in death and Julie Winn Hare of Conroe, Texas. Before his death Glenn Jr. met and married Patsy Haneline. She quickly became a part of the Winn family as well as her daughters, Kelly Haneline Cook and Jody Haneline Lonergan. Julie married Bobby Hare. have two sons, Zachary Winn Hare of New Hampshire and Matthew Blake Hare who attends Sam Houston State in Huntsville, Texas. marrying, while Mae was completing college, Glenn coached and taught school at Elysian Fields High School. He continued his education at Sam Houston State University, The University of Houston and Southern Mississippi University. Glenn left education for a short period of time working in personnel for Freeport Sulphur in Louisiana. Glenns heart was always in education and he returned to that profession as a counselor. Coming to Conroe High School was truly a dream come true. He started the counseling program at Conroe High School and was the first counselor in the Conroe Independent School District. He later served as Associate Principal at Conroe High in Guidance and Counseling. He was able to achieve the goals he had set for himself when he retired in 1989. He was a sweet husband and father but the title he loved best was Paw Paw. |
