Obituary: William Richard Rick Smith (May 24, 1952 - 4, 2015) was born to J.B. and Daisy Smith and big brother Randy in Commerce, Texas. The family later settled in Taylor, Texas, after adding brother Bob along the way. Rick graduated from Taylor High School in 1970 and entered college at Texas A&M University. transferring to Sam Houston State University, he graduated with a Bachelors in Law Enforcement and Police Science. Rick had a diverse employment history beginning at a young age, which included butcher, ambulance driver, and jewelry store proprietor. His passion was law enforcement, culminating in years spent with the Harris Sheriffs Office as a reserve deputy. Rick was also a participant in the Sheriffs Office Honor Guard. Rick married Tina Bentsen in 1977 in Huntsville, Texas. Daughter Lori was born in 1981 and son Richard in 1983. While the marriage ended after 34 years, the friendship continued. Rick is survived by daughter Lori (Evan) Johnson and grandson Ben as well as son Richard, all of Houston. He is also survived by his brother Randy (Anne) Smith of The Woodlands and brother Bob of Bedford, along with nieces Lauren (Eddie) Garcia and Camille Smith, both of Houston. The memorial service for Rick will be held on , 12th at 10:30 am at Earthman Bellaire in Bellaire, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Harris Sheriffs Office Honor Guard. |

Obituary: William Richard (Bill) Herold, Ed.D, 88, died in Austin on , 14, 2015, surrounded by his family. He was born in 1927 in Buffalo, NY. He graduated from Canisius High School, Buffalo NY in 1944. In 1946, Bill served in the U.S. Army of Occupation in Japan, receiving an honorable discharge. He received a BA in Philosophy from the Catholic University of America, 1949; an MA in French from the University of Buffalo, 1952. From 1955 to 1967, Bill taught romance languages in high school, receiving the highest praise from his students, colleagues and superiors. In 1970, he received his Ed. D. from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He taught as an Assistant Professor of Foreign Languages at the University of Texas, until 1973. For 20 years Bill worked for the United States Postal Service. In 1971, he married the love of his life, Barbara, at Bethany Lutheran Church. Obituary: William J. Riley, III, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.A.N., F.A.C.P. passed away , 21, 2014. He was a loving husband and father, a caring doctor, a tireless promoter of Catholic vocations through Serra Club International, a cattle rancher, and a mentor, teacher, and educator to all. Above all, his greatest desire was to bring honor and glory to God. Dr. Riley was an intellectual giant. He excelled as a student at UC Berkeley, the University of Chicago, and the University of Minnesota. He served as Chief of Neurology at St. Luke's Hospital, as a faculty member at Baylor and the University of Texas. He held several posts in the Harris Medical Society and the Texas Medical Association. He was a founder of the Texas Neurological Society, which is now the largest society for the specialty in the state of Texas. He served his country as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. Riley will continue to be loved by his wife Margit, his former wife Joan M. Weismann Riley, and his children: Sean and Ginny Riley, Kevan and Sarah Riley, Megan and Steve Turner, Janeen and Kevin Carter, Michael and Jeanie Riley, Britta Riley, Shane and Magdalena Riley, Tim and Amy Riley, and his honorary son, Majid Al-Sudairy. Obituary: William (Bill) J. Davies, Sr., age 90, of Conroe, Texas went to be with the Lord and his Son on May 16, 2014, after a brief illness. Bill was born on 21, 1924 to Charles A. Davies, Sr. and Magdelene McAteer Davies in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He spent most of his formative years in St. Louis, Missouri where his father built a thriving structural engineering practice. He graduated from Christian Brothers Preparatory School in 1942, which at the time was a military high school. Over the years he always recounted his time and friends at CBC with much affection. Upon graduation, Bill served his country in the South Pacific in World War II as a non-commissioned officer as a member of the 68th Medical Depot . Like most of his generation he rarely spoke of his war time experience. At the conclusion of the war, he returned home and enrolled in Washington University in Saint Louis. During his time in college, he met his soon to be wife, Ruth Barnes, who at the time was dating his brother, Art. Ultimately true love prevailed, and Bill and Ruth were married in 1949, a partnership that lasted 48 years. Bill graduated from Wash U. with both a Bachelors and Masters degree in Geology. He was hired by the Humble Oil and Refining , now ExxonMobil, as a junior geologist and moved to the Houston area in 1952. He and Ruth ultimately settled in Conroe in 1961. During his 34 year tenure with Exxon he became a well respected and accomplished production geologist. He held many key supervisory and management positions within the company, advancing to the highest professional level. Upon retiring in 1986, he and Ruth devoted a great deal of time as volunteers with the Lake Conroe Convention and Visitors Bureau. made many friends and were named Volunteers of the Year in 1997. Ruth's passing, Bill again received the award in 2001 and 2002. Bill was a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and the Houston Geologic Society. He was also a 53 year member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church serving in many capacities at the various turkey, spaghetti and pancake dinners through the years, as Scoutmaster of then Troop 593 and as an usher. Bill was always the consumate gentleman. He had a wonderful sense of humor, a keen intellect and a desire to always learn. He enjoyed the company of his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and his many friends. He will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth, and his brother Charles Arthur Davies. He is survived by his sister Patricia Davies Newcombe of Atlanta, sons William J. Davies, Jr. and wife Polly of Austin, Texas, their children Ryan Paulson(Drew Paulson; great grandsons Barton, Harry and Finn), Will and Hallie; Tim Davies and wife Lynn of Highlands Ranch, Colorado and their children Samantha, Patrick and Micah. The family wishes to thank Bill's caretakers at Conroe Regional Medical , Vitas Hospice and most especially, Jimmie Goodman, his longtime close friend. He was born 25, 1940 in Tyler, Texas to William Perry Irving, Sr. and Berna Cochran. Bill was preceded in death by his parents and twin brothers, John and Joel. As a young man Bill earned Eagle Scout, and served as Troop Master in the Boy Scouts of America. Subsequently, Bill proudly served over 40 years in the United States Navy, retiring with the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer. He began his career as a diver, but followed his passion as a photographer in Vietnam and Persian Gulf wars. Later in life he joined the Masons with memberships at Pentagon No. 1080, and Olive Branch No. 26 where he served as Past Master. Bill also enjoyed his career as a petroleum geologist. Bill was a loving son, brother, father, grandfather, and friend to all. He is survived by his daughter Kelly M. Irving; stepdaughter C. Tiffany Hooper; grandchildren Autumn D. Johnson and Jayden A. Johnson; uncle Irad Cochran; and many cousins. Visitation will be from 4:00-6:00 p.m., , 5, 2015 at Sparkman Richardson . services will be 11:00 a.m., , 6, 2015 also at the funeral home. Bill was born in Houston, Texas on , 28, 1932 and attended local schools. honorably serving his country in the United States Air Force, Bill graduated from the University of Houston and then went on to pursue his Law Degree at South Texas of Law. He practiced law for over 50 years in the Houston area. Practicing law was just one of many passions for Bill; he also loved to read, play chess, travel and to be in the sun and the water as much as possible. He was a wonderful husband, a caring and loving father and a great friend to many. Bill is preceded in death by his parents, William Barton Portis, Sr. and Dolly (Fortner) Portis, and by his niece, Paula Chonoski. He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Alexis Portis; devoted son, William Barton Portis III and wife Samia; his brother, Paul Portis and wife Gail; nephew, Kirk Portis and wife Kathy. Bill had three devoted step children; sons Michael and Devado and daughter Letisha and her husband Jes?s. Bill and had eight grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. Obituary: William B. Wood passed away surrounded by his family on 1st, 2015. William B. Wood, son of Arthur Jackson Wood and Maud Eula Pace, was born on 14, 1921 in Waco, Texas. His early years were spent in several Texas cities as well as in southern California. With war clouds gathering in 1940, he was mobilized with the Texas 36th Infantry Division ( L, 143rd Infantry Regiment, Hillsboro). He trained in Texas and Florida and was selected to attend one of the first Officer Candidate classes in Fort Benning, Georgia. serving as an instructor in Alabama, he was assigned to 84th Infantry Division. This division was assigned to the European theatre of war where he served as platoon leader, battalion intelligence officer, company commander and battalion executive officer. He received three decorations (Silver Star, Bronze Star, and Commendation Medal) and was also decorated by the then Soviet Union. He received three battle stars for his service in Europe. He served in various National Guard and Army reserve positions following WW II. Bill attended the University of Texas from 1945 to May 1948. He was an honors graduate and trained in economics and Russian language. further training at Texas A&M, he joined the Central Intelligence Agency in Washington, D.C. His work with the Agency concerned the military posture of the Soviet Union. He later served as the CIA personnel representative in southwestern United States. He was proud of his thirty-one years of service with the CIA. Based in Austin, Bill was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, serving as Deacon and as Moderator for the Board of Deacons. Recently he has attended St. Johns Presbyterian Church in Manchaca. He served as a volunteer at several Austin hospitals and was an enthusiastic student with the Lifetime Learning Institute. In addition, he helped start prostate cancer support groups throughout the U.S. Bills first wife, Frances Crowder Wood, passed away in 1987. He was married to Doni Richardson Nixon in 1997. He is survived by his wife, Doni, her family, and his son, William B. Wood, Jr. and wife from North Carolina. The family requests that any memorials be directed to First Presbyterian Church at 8001 Mesa Drive, Austin, Texas 78731. |
