Obituary: Mrs. Erica Wetmore (age 87) passed away peacefully on 13, 2016 from complications arising after suffering a hip fracture. She has gone to a wonderful reunion in Heaven with those who have paved the way - her parents, three brothers, three sisters, and her cherished adult daughter, Donna Jane (Wetmore) Nedrud. Erica Schmidt was proud to have been born 30, 1928 in Manitoba, Canada to Nicholas N. Schmidt and Jessica (nee Klassen) Schmidt who had immigrated from Ukraine in 1926 to escape the Russian revolution of 1917. The family eventually settled in the farming community of Chinook, Alberta where she attended the local public school through grade 11. Erica and her younger sister Mary were sent to the Mennonite sponsored boarding school, Rosthern Junior , where she earned her Senior Matriculation (grades 12 & 13) in 1948. attending a year of religious study at Didsbury Bible in Alberta, she then completed three years of nursing training at North Battleford General Hospital in Saskatchewan, receiving her R.N.'s pin, cap, and diploma in 1952. Then it was off to England for a year, sailing on the Cunard Line's R.M.S. Escania. A special reason for the trip to England was to attend the royal coronation of young Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, and to go to her annual Garden Party for visiting foreign British subjects. She attended both events and even had reserved bleacher seats to view the royal procession as it made its way from Buckingham palace to Westminster Abbey and back. Being a Canadian citizen and thus a British subject, she was able to register as a nurse in England and Wales through reciprocity. While in London, she worked as a nurse at the Edgeware General Hospital, rode a borrowed bicycle to work, and toured the British Isles by rail. working in London and touring continental Europe, including a Rhine River cruise, she returned home to Canada on the Cunard Lines R.M.S. Queen Mary and regaled the local Chinook populace with tales of her exploits. The next year was spent working as a nurse at the Panoka Hospital in Alberta and a short stint at McGill University Hospital in Montreal, Quebec, where her sister Mary was then living. Fulfilling a lifelong dream of flying, she went to New York City in 1954 and enrolled in the Grace Downs Academy to study and qualify as an airline stewardess, earning her blue wings that year. obtaining a U.S. work visa in early 1955, she was employed and trained again by Capitol Airlines as a flight stewardess. She was based out of Washington National Airport (now Reagan Int'l) and flew in DC-3's, DC-4's, Constellations, and the first U.S. fleet of Vickers Viscount turboprop jets in 1955. Erica met her future husband, Sherman B. Wetmore, in 1954 on a blind date in New York City while they were both in college, she in Manhattan and he in the Bronx. fell in love and were married in Calgary, Alberta on 8,1955, residing and working in the Houston area for the next nine years. were soon blessed with four children, Donna Jane, Brian Alan, Brenda Elizabeth, and John Carleton, all born in Texas. In 1964 the family was transferred to Westminster, California where they continued to raise the family for the next twenty years. becoming empty-nesters in 1984, they were transferred back to Katy (west Houston), where she and Sherman built their home and have resided until the present. Erica always had an innate passion and talent for the visual arts in its many forms but did not begin a serious pursuit of it until she was in her mid-forties. She took stained glass classes and audited a sculpting course at Golden West in California. She really began to cultivate and develop her passion for oil painting at age 44 by taking formal lessons at a small gallery in California, and less formal lessons from several other local artists. All the while, she didn't let her painting hobby interfere with her life's work of devotion to Sherman, the home, children, and the entire extended Wetmore family, both in Texas and Canada. Erica became an American citizen in 1996, and because the couple had been blessed with relatively good health throughout their marriage, they were able to celebrate their 60th Wedding Anniversary on 2015. She will be fondly remembered by all who knew her as a loving mother and grandmother, an accomplished artist, a gracious hostess, and a creative inspiration to many. Erica is survived by her beloved husband, Sherman; a brother, John Schmidt, of Calgary, Alberta; a son, Brian A. Wetmore and wife Cathy of Mission Viejo, CA, grand-daughter Chanelle Wetmore and great grand-daughter Kylie Baker, and grandson Jonathan Wetmore; a daughter, Brenda E. Harris of Katy, TX, grand-daughter Meghan (Harris) Courtright and husband Elliot, great-grandchildren Logan and Julliet, and grand-daughter Shannon Harris; a son, John C. Wetmore and wife Denise of Katy, TX, grandchildren Evan and Ella; James Nedrud (husband of her deceased daughter, Donna Jane) and wife Pam of Montevideo, MN, grand-daughter Rachel Nedrud, grand-daughter Abigail (Nedrud) Lexen and husband Paul, great grandchildren Noah and Natalie, grandson Joshua Nedrud and wife Carrie, great-grandchildren Isiah and Eleanor (almost), grandson David Nedrud and wife Hanna. Erica (Schmidt) Wetmore was interred in the Wetmore family plot on 20, 2016 at Galveston Memorial Park in Hitchcock, Texas. |
