Obituary: Born in Dallas, Texas, on 29, 1953, and passed away on 18, 2016, in a tragic accident in Tel Aviv, Israel, when a driver lost control of his car after suffering a heart attack and plowed into outdoor restaurant patrons, killing three and wounding six. Alan was a leader, mentor and inspiration to many in the startup tech world in Israel and San Antonio, where he spent most of his professional life as the founder and CEO of a public relations firm. His greatest joy and happiness came from his son Aaron, 29, and daughter Lauren, 24. One of two children born to Rose Landau and Philip Weinkrantz, a musician and rare violin collector, Alan spent much of his childhood visiting Mexico City, where his mothers parents lived after fleeing the Holocaust, and Corsicana, where his mothers sister Maliette raised three boys, all of whom referred to Alan as he fourth brother. Alan attended Dallas public schools and graduated from Bellarmine Preparatory School in San Jose, CA. He received a BA in Business from Antioch in Ohio in 1976. He started his career at an advertising agency in Dallas and by 1982 had started his own public relations firm, Alan Weinkrantz and . He had an uncanny understanding of the personal computer revolution, always making it his passion to stay one step ahead of technology trends so he could help companies create a compelling narrative, refresh their brands, and attract media. Alan married Barbara Permilla Roth in 1985, with whom he had two children; they moved in 1988 to San Antonio. Over the years, as Alan added more tech companies to his portfolio, he became a worldwide ambassador for San Antonios growing startup industry and a founding member of Geekdom, the hip downtown incubator community. His work took him to his second-favorite place, Israel, where he had both relatives and clients. Recently, he split his time between the two, taking on new clients and serving as Brand Ambassador to Israel for the managed cloud company Rackspace, and as senior advisor and brand ambassador for James Brehm & Associates, both San Antonio-based. Alan got the most pleasure being a volunteer mentor to young entrepreneurs, evidenced by the flood of heartfelt postings to Alans Facebook page since his death and impromptu memorial gatherings in San Antonio and Israel. It was easy to find him: a 24/7 lively presence on social media, he provided daily updates on where he was traveling, who he was networking with, and where and what he was eating. He wrote columns and blog posts for countless publications, including the Times of Israel, The San Antonio Express-News and Geektime, disseminating professional advice, personal musings, videos and photographs. His two greatest hobbies were music and photography. He played drums from a young age, adding guitar more recently (playing and collecting), and had a healthy obsession with the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. He encouraged his children to make as much noise as possible at home, never telling them to turn down their music. His distinctive photographs of the seemingly mundane posted daily on Instagram. Of his many gifts, the best was his infectious optimism and childlike enthusiasm for life. Never one to complain, regret, or speak ill of others, he felt lucky to be alive, healthy, and accompanied in adventure by his children and friends, all while working in a profession he loved in the places he most wanted to be. The world has lost a big burst of sunshine. He is survived by his son Aaron and daughter Lauren, both of New York City; his former wife Barbara Permilla Roth; his first cousins Steve (Laura), Gary, and Keenan (Orna) Wolens; cousins George (Tania), Zvika (Rina) and Aaron Weingart; and cousins Barbi (Tom) and Marilyn Levine. He is pre-deceased by his mother Rose Landau Fader; father Philip Weinkrantz; sister Francie Fader; aunt Maliette Wolens; aunt Dorothy (Nathan) Levine; and uncle Jay Wolens. A funeral service will be held at Sparkman Hillcrest on , 24, at 2 p.m. |
