Obituary: B2 Spirit Bomber Manager, N5VOA, and American Patriot Dies ~ David Woodward Weaver, 75, died on May 25, after a valiant battle against colon cancer. He fought the devastating disease for over seven years, before finally succumbing to it. David was the son of Estelle Dunn Weaver Ownbey and Samuel Harvil Weaver, both deceased. He was born in the small Arkansas town of Vilonia on May 31, 1938. His father was a talented stone mason of note, and the family moved to Los Angeles so that Harvil could design and build patios for movie stars, and stone facades for churches, such as the Church of the Recessional in Glendale, CA. During his early childhood in Los Angeles, David became fascinated with the mighty bombers that roared overhead on their long journeys to the Pacific War. He participated in scrap metal drives, looking at different screws and bolts and pins with fascination. In 1944, when David was six, the family returned to Arkansas. With the purchase of five acres on Kiehl Avenue in North Little Rock, David was assured an idyllic boyhood. He ran barefoot in the summer, played army, cowboys, and camped in the woods with his friends. His fascination with technical issues and the natural world never waned. The first book he ever read was GIANT JUNGLE ANTS. On 21-22, 1952 a probable F-5 tornado destroyed the Arkansas town of Judsonia. David, not yet 14, drove with a neighbor who was both a doctor and a ham radio operator. David raised antennas for other hams, and was pressed into service as a rescue worker. He saw cows with boards of splintered wood all that held them up; stately antebellum homes were reduced to kindling. Over a thousand people were injured and at least 100+ killed. Upon returning to North Little Rock, David joined ARRL, because the ham operators had done so much in co-ordination of rescue efforts. He has been a member for over half of its 100 year history, with a current call of N5VOA. high school (NLRHS, Class of 1956), David joined the USAF. At induction, he scored one of the highest test scores ever at Lackland AFB, although he would joke that all it got him was a job alphabetizing. It was in the AF that David received the first of many high security clearances. He served for nearly eleven years. Later, he would join the USAR as a WO, with a specialty in weapons systems. David went to work as a civilian at Kelly AFB in 1967. He slowly worked his way up through different areas of the base while pursuing a BS in Logistical Management at Southwest Texas State University. He did this while lovingly nurturing a family which grew to include seven children. He was asked to join the Air Force Special Weapons Directorate. At one time he was the logistical manager for every nuclear weapon in the AF inventory. Then the black operation of launching the B2Spirit Bomber, the pinnacle of his career, was handed to him. He helped refine the rotary launcher of atomic weapons on the bomber, and kept the focus on the safety of its crew and the success of its mission. He retired as one of the most honored CS employees at Kelly, and certainly one of its highest ranking. In his career he rose an astonishing eleven grades, all done with devotion to the mottoes of the two branches of military service he chose: Aim High, and Hanc Defendemus (This We Shall Defend). David was a man of unimpeachable honor and integrity. He valued truth, served justice, and honored his country with over 37 years of active service. His first priority as a warrior was the safety and security of the USA, which he loved loudly and fiercely. He respected the men he commanded. The grunt on the line was ever in his mind: how could he make him safer, support him better? He would reminisce sadly that, like so many other Cold War warriors, no one could ever know what he had done in shadow to keep this nation in sunlight. David was also fascinated by the possibility of extraterrestrial life. He was a section Director for MUFON. He contributed to reports and sightings, bringing his vast technical background to bear on the experiences of people involved in abductions. David was predeceased by his parents and by a grandson, Joseph R. LaCourse III. He is survived by his beloved wife Darlene; sons: Rene (Ken); David II; Michael (Norma); and Mark (Jessica); daughters: Kim LaCourse-Janacki; Janine Weaver; and Honey Richardson (Alan).Stepson is Cory Neal. Grandchildren are Michael Weaver, Stephanie Craig, Rhianna Weaver, Mark Anthony Weaver, Dristan Weaver, Cale Austin Weaver, Jamie Hernandez (Enrique); Jeramie LaCourse (Jessica); Noel Perez (Adrian); Nick Weaver (Jessica); Jennifer Moreno; Nick Moreno; Step-grandchildren are Collin Neal and Sloane Neal. David is also survived by many great-grandchildren whom he adored. Visitation will be held on , 5, 2015 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at Porter Loring on McCullough Ave. N5VOA CLEAR. SERVICE THURSDAY JUNE 5, 2014 10:00 A.M. PORTER LORING CHAPEL In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Thrive Well Cancer Foundation, P.O.
