Obituary: Burton Berry Watkins passed away on 10, 2016 in The Woodlands, Texas. At the time of his death, he was surrounded by loved ones. He passed away peacefully. He was 12 days shy of his 93rd birthday, having been born on 22, 1923. Burt was born in Fort Worth, Texas, the youngest of 7 siblings. He graduated from Poly High School in Fort Worth in 1941, after a successful high school football career. He attended Texas Christian University for 1 year before enlisting in the U.S. Coast Guard shortly after Pearl Harbor. He served his country during World War II and retired from the Coast Guard as a Chief Warrant Officer W-4 in 1968. During his long and distinguished Coast Guard career, he served on various Coast Guard vessels and had the opportunity to see much of the world including the Arctic and Antarctic. While he was stationed with the Coast Guard in New Orleans, Louisiana, he met a beautiful New Orleans belle by the name of Rosemary Kane. married in 1946 and together they had 2 sons, William and Grover. Burt and Rosemary had 41 wonderful years together before Rosemary passed away in 1987 shortly after she saw their first grandchild, Jessica in Houston. Prior to her death, Burt and Rosemary traveled and served all over the country including Alaska. Burt was an avid dancer and, it was during an AARP dance in New Orleans where he met and danced with his second wife, Flo Ella Bourque Dubois. Burt and Flo were married from 1988 until her death in 2007. lived in Gretna, Louisiana. While married, Burt and Flo traveled extensively including numerous trips to Hawaii and Europe where Flo was able to practice her fluent French and Burt his fluent Spanish. Burt enjoyed bowling, dancing, storytelling, spending time with his family, and traveling the world. He was exceptionally good at all of these hobbies/interests. In fact, Burt was a professional bowler, competing in numerous ABC tournaments across the country. He also taught the art of bowling to youngsters in many states. Burt was preceded in death by his parents, Grover and Julia Watkins of Fort Worth. He was also preceded in death by all of his brothers and sisters who lived in various parts of Texas. Together they had a wonderful, close-knit family and had the opportunity to live on and work farms in Texas. Burt is survived by his children, William (wife Susan) of The Woodlands and Grover (wife Jennifer) of Kingwood. He is also survived by grandchildren Jessica Chambers (husband A.J.) of Grapevine; Tyler Watkins (wife Marie) of Lafayette, Louisiana; Hunter and Kennedy Watkins of Kingwood. He is also survived by great grandson Wyatt Chambers of Grapevine. Burt is also survived by stepdaughter Deanna Gautreaux (husband Charles) of Gretna, Louisiana and their daughters Julie and DeeDee. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews in Texas and Louisiana. services are scheduled for , 15 at 11:30 a.m. at Forest Park The Woodlands . A viewing will begin at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at the Houston National where Burt will receive full military honors for his service to his country. |
