Obituary: Written by and Re-printed with permission from the San Antonio Express News written by Jennifer R. Lloyd (Sa Express News Staff Writer) SAN ANTONIO Retired U.S. Army Col. Conrad Connie Walker gave up a promising sports career in pursuit of a higher calling, becoming a chaplain with the 101st Airborne Division and 173rd Airborne Brigade and earning the nickname Leapin Deacon. Walker jumped with paratroopers and earned military accolades during the Vietnam War. His daughter Gracia Marshall of San Antonio said Walker etired his logbook after 600 jumps. His wife of 60 years, Joan Ann Walker, said he even modified his jump routine for his faith, replacing the numerical countdown with Father, Son, Holy Spirit, Amen before leaping. Conrad Walker died in San Antonio at age 82. His family said the death was the result of Agent Orange-related illnesses. One of three boys, Walker was born in 1932 to Don and Bebe Walker in the bedroom of his parents home in Herrick, Ill. He and his future wife were high school sweethearts who married in 1953 after a five-year courtship. The couple had three daughters and two sons. Joan Walker said her husband was scouted to play baseball before heading to the University of Washington in Seattle where he was a guard on the Huskies football team and held amateur heavyweight boxing titles in the 1950s. Despite being recruited to play sports professionally, he chose the Lord over all these other opportunities and financial gain, Marshall said. He attended Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minn., and worked in a parish in Elmore, Minn., before the church asked him to consider becoming a military chaplain though it meant a cut in pay. Retired Col. Chaplain Conrad Walker delivers the Easter sermon at Fort Sam Houston in 2000. He was recruited for professional sports but chose a religious career instead. said he was better qualified, because he was a boxer and a football player, to take more abuse than the other pastors who were thinking about joining the military, his wife said. He earned the Silver Star for gallantry in combat in Vietnam on 29, 1966, according to an Express-News story about Walkers retirement from the Army in 1990. Marshall said that her father, as a noncombatant chaplain, had only carried a machete. But when he accompanied a relief platoon to the scene of a firefight, he helped the medic to bring the wounded men back from the direct line of fire, despite machine gun fire that intermittently raked the area, an Army citation reads. I just remember swimming at the pool with him as a child and seeing these divots in his side and not realizing that they were bullet grazes, Marshall said. retiring from the Army, Walker spent several years as pastor of MacArthur Park Lutheran Church before continuing to serve the troops through the Worldwide Retreat Ministry and sharing his boisterous laugh, which made people want to be around him ecause he just had the joy of the Lord, relatives said. He is survived by his beloved wife of sixty years, Joan Ann Walker; daughters, Beverly Bartlett (Ron), Miriam Walker, and Gracia Marshall (John); and sons, Randall Walker (Candy) and Timothy Walker (Heather); brothers, Don Walker (Ann) and Bill Walker (Jackie), twenty-two grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the 173rd Airborne Brigade Association Foundation, 1208 Iowa Street, South Houston, Texas 77587; Military Order of the Purple Heart, Dept. of Texas Adjutant, 7614 North Vandiver, San Antonio, Texas 78209; Concordia Lutheran School, 16801 Huebner, San Antonio, Texas 78258. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., , 5, 2014, at Concordia Lutheran Church. SERVICE THURSDAY JUNE 5, 2014 11:00 A.M. CONCORDIA LUTHERAN CHURCH 16801 HUEBNER SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS Interment with Full Military Honors will follow in Fort Sam Houston National at 1:30 p.m. |

Wolff. ln 1950 her family moved to Corpus Christi, Texas where she graduated from W. B. Ray High School. She then attended Sophie Newcomb Collage in New Orleans, LA, where she majored in Art. In 1956 she met her future husband, Thomas Charles Walker, who was in Corpus Christi training as a Navy Pilot, on a blind date.
