He attended the Hinckley School, in Hinckley, Maine and in 1944 graduated with a BA degree from Colby in Waterville, Maine. graduation he attended Dartmouths Amos Tuck School of Business through the Navys V-12 Program. Later at Columbia University, he was commissioned as an Ensign, before serving in World War II. Alden was a second officer in command of an amphibious ship landing tanks on the beachheads during the Normandy invasion on D-Day.

In 1947, he received an honorable discharge from the United States Navy and settled in Dallas where he married Dorothy Helena Underwood. He started his business career as a mortgage banker, eventually becoming a homebuilder and building over 5000 homes in Dallas. 1965, he concentrated on building shopping centers and developing commercial properties.

Alden was Vice Chairman of the Mortgage Banking Committee of the National Builders Association. He was one of the original incorporators of the Richardson Heights Bank, past director of Stewart Title Co., and a director of La Quinta Motor Inns. Philanthropy was a hallmark of Aldens life. He donated generously to his alma maters the Hinckley School and Colby ; as well as endowing a chair in the business school at UT Austin, and giving an annuity trust to the SMU Cox School of Business.

▰ Viola U Van Wagn

Died September 25, … More Information
Viola U Van Wagn left this earth on September 25, 2001 to meet with Jesus, her Lord and Savior in Texas. Obituary: Viola U. Van Wagn, born 23, 1898, died 25, 2001, at the age of 102, lived in three centuries. She was a devoted Christian and member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Always loving, giving and happy, she was a wonderful cook and homemaker. She worked at JoskeÂs for 17 years before her retirement in 1969. Her beloved husband, Eugene Van Wagn, preceded her in death. She is survived by her daughter, Reinette Cottingham and husband Billy; grandchildren, Ronald Cottingham and wife Carolyn of New Braunfels, TX, Claudia Bush and husband David of Houston, TX, Gary Cottingham and wife Cynthia of Austin, TX, Reinette Joyce Miller and husband Jack of Houston, TX; great grandchildren, Dea and Matthew Cottingham, Haydn Bush, Courtney Pitcher and husband Garick, Meredith and Natalie Cottingham, Jackson and Elissa Miller; niece Ursula Walden and husband Glenn.

Father Tonys remarks at Violas memorial service:

DEATH IS A BIRTH INTO A NEW LIFE

A poem about life after death, but first, let us remind ourselves that for the Christian, passing through death is really a birth into a new and better world. Our dear ones live on, in a beautiful world beyond anything we can imagine. For, Eye has not seen, ear has not heard, nor has it so much as dawned on man what God has prepared for those who love Him. I Cor. 2:9

Its been said that if a tiny baby could think, it would be afraid of birth. To leave the only world it has known in the mothers womb would seem a kind of death. But immediately after birth, the child would find itself in loving arms - his dad, mother and grandparents, all smothering the baby with love. If the baby could talk, it would surely say, I was foolish to doubt Gods plan for me. This is a beautiful life.

Now about the poem:

I am home in heaven at last.

All the pain and grief are past,

The waitings finally over.

Now its peace and joy forever.

Now I know: to leave the earth

Was really a second birth---

Loves eternal preparation,

Not a tragic separation.

Try not to look so sad.

Don cry and feel so bad.

I am glad I left this land,

And took Gods loving Hand.

I took His hand on bended knee

When Jesus came to me,

As Gabriel gave his trumpet blast

HAPPY AT HOME IN HEAVEN AT LAST!
