Obituary: Thomas Houston White, better known as “Tom”, died 5th 2015 in Greenville, SC. He was the beloved husband of Audrey Roe White. Born in Greenville, S.C, son of the late Len Graham and Corean Gossett White. Tom was a founding member of Saint Matthew United Methodist Church. He served as church treasurer for many years and also served on various church boards. He was a member of the Christian Fellowship class. Tom attended Mercer University where he was a life member of Kappa Alfa Fraternity. Tom graduated from The Citadel in 1950 and was a life member of the Citadel Alumni association. A Veteran of the US Navy, he served in the Atlantic and Pacific Theater in World War ll. A pilot receiving his license to fly at an early age, Tom was a member of the “Old Time Fly Boys.” Tom was the retired owner and President of White Transport Corporation before selling the company to Old Dominion Freight Line. He later was affiliated with Christopher Truck sales. Tom was gifted with a quick wit and had a great sense of humor. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. In addition to his wife of almost 68 years are two daughters Audrey (Bunny) Morgan (George E. of Gaffney, SC) and Harriet Lynn Hopple (James of Greenville, SC.) Two granddaughters Audrey (Katie) and Mark Lester of Norcross, GA., Holly Houston and Jack Easterby of Columbia, SC, and two grandsons, George Jr. and Elizabeth Morgan of a, GA, and John and Claire Hopple of Nashville, TN. Five great grandchildren Brandon Lester, Houston Easterby, Harriet Easterby, Ellie Morgan, and Libby Morgan. Also surviving are one niece and one nephew. He was preceded in death by his sister Mary Ann Epps. Services will be held , 8, 2015 at 11:00 am at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Remembrance Chapel. Visitation will follow the service. The family suggests donations be made to Saint Matthew United Methodist Church, 701 Cleveland Street, Greenville, SC 29605; or The Citadel Foundation, 171 Moultrie Street, Charleston, SC 29409. |

Obituary: Thomas Britton White, Jr. CAMDEN - For ninety years, seven months and ten days, Thomas Britton White, Jr. of Camden had a very good run. Sadly, it ended on , 14, 2015 with Andy and Debbie by his side. a courageous, decades-long battle with pigweed, he succumbed to a brief bout with lymphoma. He left us convinced that if that pesky weed is, in fact, present in Heaven, there will also be a herbicide that is 100% effective against it. Further, he did not expect to find squirrels there when he arrived last evening. The oldest son of Thomas Britton and Mary Winonah McCoy White, he was born on 4, 1924 into the depths of the post-Reconstruction agricultural depression in Lee , South Carolina. Thomas was an anachronism, and he allowed us to experience history with every story he told. Firmly rooted in the 20th Century, he was amazed by the changes he witnessed over his nine decades. He started life on the family farm, with no indoor plumbing, electricity or telephone, yet he ended his days with an Ipad, an email address, a Facebook page and his own Pandora account (with channels for Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller and Porter Wagner). In between, he found his way to Clemson in the Fall of 1942 (his stay cut short by freshman calculus a poor bet on the Enlisted Reserve Corps in 1943), married Isabel, his 4-H Camp sweetheart in May 1944 and travelled the world on Uncle Sam's dime to such luxurious spots as Saipan and Iwo Jima. Tom made his way back home in 1946. He and Isabel set up house in Columbia while he attended USC on the GI Bill. There, they welcomed Faye to the family and, two years later, Tommy. Andy surprised them in 1960. He tried his hand at farming again in 1949, thought better of it in 1950 and signed on at DuPont, where he remained until his retirement in 1984. He was very proud to have made it to Senior Design Engineer (thank you, Bruce) before the unwinding of the company. He was also greatly humored to have lived long enough for his retirement earnings to vastly eclipse those of his active employment. His retirement years were filled with joy, spending time planting, hunting, fishing and piddling at the family farm with his grandchildren and friends, playing golf with his brothers and friends at the Camden Country Club, bridge with the Baxleys, Halls, Woolards and Richardsons and poker with his Third Poker Club buddies Bill, Barney, John, Frank, Foy and Henry. He made it in time to join Al, Bill, Henry, Mel, Paul and Don for his best poker gathering yet on evening. Pop taught us to serve God, our families, our communities and our professions. He did so by word and deed. He and Isabel were faithful members of Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church - and the Wimberly School class - for over 65 years. He served as chairman, president or commander of most organizations he joined, but he was most fulfilled by his dual service as chaplain of his Masonic Lodge and American Legion Post, where he helped scores of his brothers and comrades find their way . To Pop, family meant everyone from his parents and siblings and in-laws to aunts, uncles and his cousins. He could tell you his relationships down to third and fourth cousins - and their children. His extended family was spread across Lee, Sumter and Kershaw Counties as well as around the Country, and he cherished all of you. However, he was none too pleased with the burden of being the family patriarch, as that meant you would be the next to go. He is survived by his wife of over seventy years, Fay Isabel Smith White, his daughter, Winonah Faye White Coan and son-in-law, Gilbert Fitzgerald Coan, Jr. of Brevard, NC, his oldest son, Thomas Britton White, III and daughter-in-law, Paige Randolph White of Long Beach, CA, and his youngest son, Andrew David White and daughter-in-law, Debra Stueber White of Lexington, SC. He is also survived by grandchildren, Thomas Britton White, IV, Amelia Coan Templeton, James Lawrence Coan, Andrew Stueber White, Benjamin Lee White and Lucas Aaron White and their spouses (and significant others) and five great-grandchildren. He dearly loved his surviving sisters-in-law, Salome White, Ann White, Marian White, Rouie Miller, Mary Alice Smith, Panagoita Smith and Ann Smith and his surviving brothers-in-law, Paul Smith and Bill Miller. Pop was pre-deceased by just about everybody else, including his brothers, Averil McCoy White, Dr. Harold McCoy White and Maj. Lawrence Anthony White, USAF, Retired, and his dear friend, Marvin Cribb. His funeral will be held at 3:00 pm on 22, 2015 at Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church in Camden, SC, with Rev. Steve Patterson officiating and Rev. David Weaver assisting. The family will receive visitors at the church Fellowship Hall one hour prior to the service. Immediately following the service, everyone is invited to a celebration of his life at Four Boys Farm located at 643 Egypt Road near Camden, SC, where slightly over-cooked hot dogs will be served. |

Obituary: Thad Nathaniel White WEST COLUMBIA - Thad Nathaniel White, 92, husband of the late Charlene Merritt White of 58 years, was called home by our Heavenly Father on , 20, 2015. Mr. White was born in Dobson, NC. 8, 1922, a son of the late Pearl Phillips and J. Emery White. Mr. White was proud to serve honorably in World War II, Pacific Theater and the Korean Conflict from of 1942 until of 1946. The family would like to thank all involved with The Honor Flight for a humbling day spent in Washington, DC with other Veterans. Mr. White was a graduate of Dobson High School with honors, attending Boys State in 1938. He also graduated from The National School of Commerce in Charlotte, NC. He retired in 1990 with 40 years of service with Pitney Bowes. He was an active member of Lexington Baptist Church, having served as an usher, with the Intercessory Prayer Ministry on the night watch team and on the desk in the Family Life . He enjoyed his friends and involvement in the Lexington Wildlife Chapter. Mr. White was a devoted and loving Christian who graciously cared for the needs of his family and others. As a farmers son he loved dirt, gardening, fishing and growing the earliest and best tomatoes around. Sharing his bounty with others would brighten his day. He is survived by his daughters, Paula Lorick of West Columbia, Linda Cooley (Curtis) of Lexington, Anita Green of Florence; 5 grandsons, Stephen Craig Lorick (Gina), Michael Brian Cooley (Brandi), Keith Nathaniel Cooley (Emily), Michael Neil Fowler (Heidi) and Merritt Mackenzae Clack (Nicole); four great-grandsons, Brandon Lorick, Austin Lorick, Carter Cooley and Dosson Cooley; six great-granddaughters, Caroline Cooley, Ryen Robertson, Madeline Cooley, Melody Fowler, Autumn Fowler, Jerri-Lynn Clack and sisters, Naomi Salley and Charlene Trivett (James). In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by a sister, Glenda White. services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. , 24, 2015 at Lexington Baptist Church by the Rev. Jerry Freeman with Interment in Southland Memorial Gardens with Military Honors. The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. in the Worship . Pallbearers will be the grandsons and Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Lexington Wildlife Chapter. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Lexington Baptist Church, 308 E.
