Dolly Cooper Veterans , Anderson, SC. under the direction of Woodlawn , Greenville, SC. WE REMEMBER MOM Born 20, 1925, Lillie Mildred True was the daughter and fifth child of Kelly Davis and Clarice Clay True of Georgetown, Kentucky. Granddad True was a finish carpenter and Granny was a homemaker. Our granddad, with the help of his 4-year old son, hammered laths for plaster in the cold winter of 1927. Finally, three rooms were completed, and the young family was able to move into their first home situated on six rolling acres ot too far from a river, lots of beautiful trees, and enough land for a big garden. It was in this idyllic setting that our mom lived until she left home after graduation from high school. Lillie (as she was then called) moved six miles to Lexington and completed training at the Lexington School of Calculating. It was wartime, and she soon became part of the support effort as she worked at the United States Army Signal Corps. Her brother, Roy, and a cousin worked in the Philadelphia Navy yard. In Gods providence, they invited a young handsome Marine to come home to a family reunion when they were on leave. Bob and Lillie began a courtship that lasted until after he returned from fighting in the Pacific. were married on 10, 1946. A baby girl (Janice) was soon born and four boys (Robert, Stephen, Kevin and Phillip) followed. Our mother was never blessed with good health, but she prepared meals, did mountains of laundry, and cared for us for in spite of her daily struggles. By the time she was 21, she had had the flu every winter. In the early 1950s she began suffering with debilitating migraines and was given an experimental drug that affected her for the remainder of her life. Having come to Christ very young in life, her earliest writings reveal a desire to serve God and to tell others of Christs saving grace. The first person she led to Christ was her maid of honor. Mom never met a stranger, and she was always prepared to share the Gospel! During his years as a full-time student at Bob Jones University, Dad served as assistant superintendent of the Greenville Rescue Mission in Greenville, South Carolina, and worked a 40-hour week in the tool and die industry to support his growing family. Mom cared for our home and us during this time, but she continued to have excruciating headaches. Upon Dads graduation from BJU in 1955, he was ordained into the ministry in Shelbyville, Tennessee, and thus began their decades of ministry together. We first moved to Marion, Ohio where Dad became the superintendent of the Marion Union Rescue Mission. Even with five children, Mom always played a supportive role in numerous areas at the mission. Mom loved to play the piano, organ, and accordion, and she used her talent in various churches and camps where they ministered for the next 50 years. In their last 11 years in active ministry, they made use of computer-controlled robots that were completely engineered by Dad. Marvelous Millie would create colorful and eye-catching visuals for the songs they taught young people in churches throughout the East. Both our parents had a heart for missions, and Mom would dress in authentic Chinese attire as Kung Fu Katie and tell the story of missionary Hudson Taylor in their meetings. She wrote in her diary, I wouldn take 10 million dollars for our eleven years together traveling with the Gospel and seeing so many souls saved. Millie also loved flowers, and while she was president of the local garden club in Tifton, Georgia, the organization achieved many honors. She was an accomplished seamstress as well, and her outfits were always colorful and coordinated, from earrings to shoes! Mom spent her latter years keeping mementos and photos from events and from our children and us, compiling them into several dozen detailed albums. Mom was passionate about seeing her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in heaven one day. Her diaries contain repeated entries of our parents prayer times in the morning and reveal their concern for their children and grandchildren. The following paraphrases from the book of Philippians sum up numerous statements scattered throughout her diaries, day after day, year after year. Every time I think of you, I give thanks to my God. I always pray for you, and I make my requests with a heart full of joy. I am sure that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on that day when Christ Jesus comes back again. You have a very special place in my heart. God knows how much I love you and long for you with the tender compassion of Christ Jesus. continued... |
