Obituary: Gladys Marjorie Richardson Webb was born in Smyrna. Delaware on 21, 1918. In her early childhood, the family lived in the household of her maternal grandmother, Ida Richardson Bedford until moving to the 6th and Kater neighborhood in South Philadelphia. A few years later, they settled in the Woodland Avenue neighborhood of Southwest Philadelphia. Gladys attended Philadelphia School Districts Alexander Wilson Elementary School and Shaw Junior High School before graduating from West Philadelphia High School. She would often fondly recall the dedication and kindnesses shown to her by the teachers at Wilson at a time when she, her classmates, friends and families were experiencing the challenges of the Depression. It was in those years that she began demonstrating her instincts for helping others by volunteering to assist the teachers serve breakfast to students who needed a nutritious meal. Gladys married William T. Webb on 31, 1940. settled in the neighborhood in which they had grown up and raised their daughter Carolyn Ann there until 1951 when they moved to West Philadelphia. Gladys and Webby were married for more than 57 years. He passed in , 1998 In her youth and teenage years, Gladys was a member of Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church. She attended St. Monicas Episcopal Church near 42nd and Woodland Avenue as a young married woman during the tenure of the late Reverend Arthur Moore and was confirmed under the late Reverend Matthew W. Davis. the merger with St. Andrews, Gladys continued her work and was involved in a variety of ministries. She was a long-time member of St. Monicas Guild and participated enthusiastically in its activities to support the church, often taking it upon herself to provide door prizes such as fruit baskets or her delicious Pineapple Upside-Down Cake as unexpected surprises to her fellow guild members. She also played a role in the governance of the church, serving terms on the Vestry and as a Deanery Delegate. In that respect, she was following the examples of her mother, Florence Manlove, who is reputed to have been the first woman to be elected to the Vestry at St. Monicas as well as the example of her husband, Webby who served the church in many capacities over the years ranging from Senior Warden and Finance Warden to Clerk of the Vestry. Motivated by a desire to help her mother, Gladys began demonstrating her strong work ethic in her teenage years by obtaining an after-school job. She later worked at the Morrow Nut Store in South Philadelphia as a Sales Clerk and then as a secretary for a small religious newspaper, also in South Philly. With her stenographic skills, she passed the Civil Service Test and began a long career working for the Veterans Administration Regional Office on Wissahickon Avenue in the post WWII era. She retired from the VA after more than 30 years. Outside of her church, Gladys was a Life Member of the Union of Black Episcopalians and participated in the Philadelphia UBE Chapter. She was a supporter of Episcopal Community Services and served as a volunteer helping adults learn to read in a literacy project. She was a supporter of the Soup Kitchen operated under the late Reverend Raymond Mitchell in Norristown and was a donor year after year to the Scholarship Fund at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. The United Negro Fund was another of her favorite recipients. Part of the legacy left by Gladys is the understated way that she found to be of support to young people. It may have been buying a prom dress for a high school senior, or providing a book stipend to a young man preparing to enter the ministry, or anonymously providing funds to pay legal fees, etc. This is one aspect of the ways that she found to help others. She was an active club woman for decades in Club Thirteen and a member of the Amicitia Wives Auxiliary. Gladys interests included a love of travel to points near and far. She would often be part of a contingent taking a bus trip to New York to see a play, a shopping tour to Reading or to places such as Boston to be a supporter at the historic consecration of The Right Reverend Barbara Harris, the first woman in the worldwide Anglican Communion to become a bishop or to New Orleans for the institution of Reverend Curtis Sisco , a product of St. Andrew and St. Monica. She also had a talent for the needle arts such as embroidery and sewing and enjoyed cultivating flowers in the backyard. Devoted grandparents, Gladys and Webby travelled at least once a year to spend time with their beloved grandsons, David and Stephen and their parents in various parts of the country. Christmas, graduations and other milestones in the lives of the grandsons found Nana and Grandfather in the Cincinnati area, Rhode Island, Spring, TX and eventually Northern California. also were part of the faithful Watson Family members who for decades met for a reunion in various locales ranging from Charlottesville, VA, the ancestral home, to St. Louis, MO. Gladys was warmly called one of the Outlaws, those members of the clan related by marriage that consistently supported, helped host and attended the reunions. She travelled beyond the United States to Puerto Rico, The Bahamas, Mexico, London and Paris. Gladys was preceded in death by her beloved husband Webby; her mother, Florence E. Manlove whom she called Mother Florence; her brother, Albert Richardson; her sister, Doris Leecan; niece, Barbara Milton and her sisters-in-law: Grace Saunders, Alice Webb and Marian Heath as well as her aunts who were like sisters: Reba Brown, Helen Carter, Alice Henry and Hazel Parker. She is survived by her daughter Carolyn W. Gaines of Walnut Creek, CA; grandsons David R. Gaines of Walnut Creek, CA and Stephen B. Gaines ( Tiffany ) of Oakland, CA; Roscoe Gaines, son-in-law of CA; great-grandsons Kodi S. and newborn Kenji U. Gaines of continued... |
