Obituary: Harold N. Wolaver died peacefully while in hospice care at Autumn Leaves of Edmond on 15, 2014, following recovery from a stroke and heart disease. Born 8, 1933, in Oklahoma City to Emma Leigh Wolaver (née Dunavan) and Charles N. Wolaver, the youngest of six children, Harold grew up at 1111 West Park Street in Oklahoma City and graduated in 1951 from Central High School, where he was selected as an All American baseball team member (catcher). Raised during the Dust Bowl, he tackled challenges and overcame most through intellect, hard work, wit and perseverance. Family and friends learned from his storytelling and observations from a lifetime including his professional career and personal projects as a hobbyist, woodworker and handyman. Wolaver earned a degree in geology from Oklahoma Christian University in 1955 and was selected for life membership in the Blue Key National Honor Fraternity. He later worked with Kerr-McGees uranium mining operation in New Mexico before returning to Oklahoma to attend O.U. law school. He later pursued a 40+ year career in public service including two years in the U.S. Army Intelligence Corp. stationed in Munich, assignments for the U.S. Dept. of Interior/Forest Service in Denver and San Diego, and as an Internal Revenue Service collections officer in Texas, Alabama, California and Oklahoma. The same year he earned a private pilots license, Wolaver married Betty Loraine McClellan when in 1970 the couple eloped to San Francisco before returning to Oklahoma City to start a family including son Nicholas (b. 1973) and daughter Lorrie (b. 1974). In 1975, the Wolavers established their home in Edmond, where the family resided until early 2014 (39 years). In his garage he successfully built a six-foot dinosaur, completed detail work on many hand-crafted models, and he restored a 1957 Lone Star boat with motor (just three of dozens of pet projects and DIY home improvements he enjoyed). During 80 years, Wolaver survived many close calls he shared from time to time. While working in the desert Southwest, a jeep he was driving rolled down the side of a quarry wall and came to rest on the edge of a cliff (fortunately, he walked away from the accident). While on holiday leave during military service in Europe, Wolaver was rescued from a rip-tide/undertow near-drowning on the coast of Italy. Years later, in 1995, Wolaver was heading to the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City to withdraw cash from the credit union, but he realized during the walk he did not need money thanks to some weekend Remington Park winnings. This close call saved Wolaver from the disastrous events later that fateful morning. And in 2011 he survived a hidden illness \ a near-fatal bleeding ulcer \ rescued by emergency care summoned by his daughter. retiring from IRS in 1998, Wolaver enjoyed restoring furniture, wheeling and dealing at estate sales, some (but not enough) fishing and regular trips to Remington Park to perfect his version of horse handicapping. During 43.5 years of marriage Harold remained near Betty and was her primary caregiver following her diagnosis of Alzheimers in 2008 until her death on Feb. 19, 2014. Preceded in death by his wife Betty, brothers William and Charles, as well as sisters Charlotte Wolaver Turpin and Mary Wolaver Scurlock, Harold is survived by his children, Nicholas Wolaver of Atlanta and Lorrie Wolaver of Oklahoma City, as well as one of five siblings, Frances Robertson of Fort Worth, brother-in-law Yale Scurlock and cousin Charles Turpin of Oklahoma City, sister-in-law Dorothy Wolaver of Nashville, brother-in-law Scott McClellan of Dallas, and other cousins, nieces and nephews, as well as many neighbors and friends. |

Obituary: Betty Loraine Wolaver (née McClellan), died peacefully in hospice care with family nearby at Grace Living in Edmond, Okla., on Feb. 19, 2014, after living for many years with Alzheimers. Born Jan. 7, 1943 in Enid, Okla., the eldest child of Louis and Doris McClellan (née Britton), Betty graduated from Enid High School in 1961. She earned her bachelors degree from Phillips University in 1966 before moving to Oklahoma City to work with Medical Arts Lab. In 1969, mutual friends introduced her to Harold N. Wolaver, whom she married in San Francisco in 1970. Together they raised two children, Nicholas (b. 1973) and Lorrie (b. 1974) in their home in Edmond, Okla. Betty established her own home-based business as a seamstress, creating hundreds of costumes, wedding dresses, cheerleading and vocal music uniforms and other specialty items for customers, friends and family during nearly 30 years of dedicated work. Betty also enjoyed volunteer work, contributing many years of service to Will Rogers Elementary School P.T.O., for which she led publication of the Will Rogers Schoolhouse Sampler cookbook in 1983. She also led her daughters Blue Bird and Camp Fire groups, and supported her sons Odyssey of the Mind competitions. She was also very involved in planning reunions for her Enid High School class. Her volunteer and community spirit led her to donate time to other causes including First Unitarian Church of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, U.S. Olympic Festival 89, Bryant Accord, Cedar Ridge Neighborhood Association, of Dimes and other community awareness programs. Wolaver was an avid reader, crossword puzzle solver, master of Trivial Pursuit, and well-known for her clever sense of humor. She loved neighborhood walks, and for many years remained a recognized neighbor on the move in Cedar Ridge. When faced with her diagnosis she fought to slow its progression with increased neighborhood strolls. She shared her love of music through playing piano and enthusiasm for recordings by her favorite musicians and classical composers. Betty will be fondly remembered as a kind, loving and compassionate wife, mother, sibling and friend. She possessed a generous spirit and sweet disposition, always lending a considerate ear and offering a kind word and cheerful smile to brighten others day. Preceded in death by her parents, Wolaver is survived by her husband Harold of Edmond, daughter Lorrie of Oklahoma City and son Nicholas of Atlanta, as well as her brother, Scott McClellan of Dallas, cousins Lee Ann Teasley and Kris Ladusau of Oklahoma City, Ann Campbell Newman of Thousand Oaks, Calif., and other family members and friends as well as many generous caregivers at Grace Living and Daily Living of Edmond. |
