Obituary: Jack M. Williams, CLU, ChFC, passed away on 21, 2010. He was born 17, 1921 in West Pittston, PA, grew up in Upper Montclair, NJ, with summers in Point Pleasant Beach, NJ, and graduated from Montclair HS and Rutgers University with a major in economics and a minor in music. The son of an unemployed coal miner whose mother had died, Jack was roaming the streets of West Pittston without supervision. He fell in with a gang of older youths who derailed a freight train, nearly killing the engineer. The older youths were sent to reform school, but there was a question of what to do with Jack, who was nine. Arthur and Anna Rose Wright (Pop Wright and Mother Wright), offered to let him stay with their family at the New Jersey shore for two weeks, until a suitable place could be found for him. He arrived suffering from malnutrition and a host of other serious problems, including deafness due to adenoids. Disapproving friends of the Wrights called him a wild young delinquent. His two-week visit was extended to the end of the summer. Jack pleaded to stay. The children of the Wright Family, Trot, Tom and Eensie, voted to let him stay, which he did until he went to college nine years later, on a four-year scholarship to Rutgers University. His story and the story of the Wright Family appeared in a May, 1943 Readers Digest article entitled He Adopted Us, and also the book Room for One More, written my Mother Wright under the pen name Anna Parrot Rose, which became a Warner Brother movie of the same name starring Cary Grant as Pop Wright and Betsy Drake as Mother Wright. He was an Eagle Scout and leader of the high school orchestra, and later a varsity pole vaulter and member of Lambda Chi Alpha at Rutgers, until his college years were interrupted by World War II. As a naval officer in World War II, he served as a carrier-based torpedo bomber pilot (Torpedo Squadron One) aboard the USS Yorktown (CV-10) in 1944 and participated in Battle of the Philippine Sea, the Mariannas Turkey Shoot, the first US attack on Chi Chi Jima in the Bonin Islands, for which he received the first of four air medals, and the invasions of Guam, Saipan and Tinian in the Pacific Theater. Flying from the USS Bennington (CV-20) in 1945 he made daily low level attacks on military and industrial targets in Tokyo and Yokosuka Naval Base, and flew as the second plane leading the Victory Air Parade over the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, while surrender ceremonies took place below. He was most proud of making supply drops to POW camps in the mountains of Japan, sometimes at altitudes of 50 feet. World War II, he served as naval flight instructor, and then returned to complete his studies at Rutgers University. On his first liberty from the Naval Air Station in Norman in 1942, he attended an Army Officers dance at the Biltmore Hotel in Oklahoma City as an uninvited guest, where he met Margaret Elizabeth Morris of Altus, OK, who was working in the food brokerage business and living at the YMCA. married in of 1943, prior to Jack leaving for his first combat tour in the Pacific. a joyous 65-year marriage, during which Margaret worked with Jack in the life insurance business for 42 years, Margaret passed away on 10, 2009. Jack was a New York Life Insurance agent in Oklahoma City for over 57 years, beginning in 1952. He did not retire, but worked until his hospitalization a few weeks before his death. He served as president of the Oklahoma City Association of Life Underwriters, President of the State Association of Life Underwriters and as president of the Estate Planning Council. In 2003 he received the highest award of the Oklahoma Association of Insurance and Financial Advisers, the J. Hawley Wilson award. An active member of St. Lukes United Methodist Church, he was a long time member of its Administrative Board, taught adult school classes, and was a member of the Wedding Ring School Class. He was a gifted pianist and able to play virtually any song by ear, a talent recognized and encouraged by Mother Wright, and played the piano weekly at St Lukes events and at Integris Baptist Medical . He is survived by his son, John Michael Williams and his wife Kathy of Oklahoma City; grandson Shad D. Williams, his wife Paige and great grandchildren, Ramsay, Addison and Brennan of Memphis, TN; grandson Christopher J. Williams and his wife Angie of Plano, TX; grandson Ted J. Williams of Tulsa, OK; and grandchildren Jeffrey S. Williams and Paige Elizabeth Williams of Oklahoma City; and, is also survived by his son, Mark Robert Williams, his wife Lesa, and grandchildren Steven and Adriane Williams, all of Oklahoma City. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on , 24, 2010 at Guardian West Chapel. A graveside service will be held at 9:00 a.m. on , 25, 2010 at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, 8701 NW Expressway, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. A memorial service will be held at St. Lukes United Methodist Church, 222 N.W. 15th Street, Oklahoma City, OK at 11:00 a.m. on , 25, 2010. The Family wishes to express its heartfelt thanks to the dedicated doctors and nursing staff of Deaconess Hospital and to Mother Wright, Pop Wright, and the Wright children, Trot and Tom, who have predeceased him, and to Eensie, who survives him, for taking a chance on a wayward boy almost 80 years ago.
