Obituary: Marjorie Smith Woodring, a lifelong resident of Portage , died , 8, 2014 at the Gardens of Western Reserve in Streetsboro. She was 96. Marjorie was born in 1918 in Rootstown, the daughter of Mervin and Lila May (Root) Smith. Marjorie graduated from Rootstown high School in 1936. graduation she attended Mount Union where she was affiliated with Alpha Chi Omega social sorority and was a member of the A Capella Choir. She transferred to Kent State University in 1937 and graduated in 1941 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. At Kent State, she was a member of Psi Lambda Omicron Honorary Sorority. Prior to her marriage in 1942, to C. Wilson Woodring, she taught at Fowler Township High School in Trumbull . Mrs. Woodrings whole life was her pride in her children, Caryl Rae and David Wayne. While they were in school, she was active in Parent Teacher groups, Band Patrons and was assistant leader of her daughters Camp Fire Girls group. In 1960 Marjorie completed retraining courses for elementary teaching at Kent State University. She taught second grade at Lincoln School, Cuyahoga Falls for 25 years retiring in 1985 as Teacher Emeritus. She was honored as a Martha Holden Jennings Scholar in 1969-1970. She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Kent, National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution, being Aaron Olmstead Chapters Regent 1993-1997 and 2001-2003; Kappa Kappa Iota Professional Teachers Sorority, being conclave President 1990-1992; Olive Chapter of Eastern Star; Summit Teachers Association; Ohio Retired Teachers Association; Kent State University Alumni Association and life member of the Kent Historical Society and Ohio State NSDAR Officers Club. Marjorie was a past member of the Travelers Club, being president 2002-2004; American Association of University women (Kent Branch); Cuyahoga Falls Education Association; Ohio Education Association and National Education Association. An avid traveler, she visited all 50 states before traveling out of the United States 33 times, taking her to 93 countries, including all seven continents plus the North Pole. She is survived by her son-in-law, Ronald Krannich of Woodbridge, VA; and granddaughter, Brittany Woodring. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Dr. Caryl Woodring; and son, Col. David Wayne Woodring who is buried in Arlington National in Washington D.C. Calling hours will be held 5-7 PM , 12th at Bissler & Sons in Kent, where funeral services will be held 10:00 AM , 13th at Bissler & Sons with Rev. Heather Wicks officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Kent United Church of Christ, 1400 E. Main Street, Kent, OH 44240. |
