Obituary: COLUMBIANA, OH- There will be Services at 10 a.m. at the Lane Family s-Austintown Chapel, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m., officiated by Fr. Christopher Cicero at St. Jude Roman Catholic Church, 180 Seventh St., Columbiana, OH for John R. Waldorf, Sr., 90, who died , 31st at St. Elizabeth in Youngstown. John was born 28, 1925 in Pittsburgh, a son of John and Juliana Selek Waldorf, who came to this country from Malatzka, Austria-Hungray. John attended St. Boniface Catholic School and Parish in Pittsburgh, through the 8th grade. Before military service growing up, John worked in his fathers bakery shop on Shreve Street, which included an outlet bakery inside Gimbels on Smithfield Street in Pittsburgh and was also employed at the West Penn Machine Shop in Pittsburgh in their maintenance department as an assistant boilermaker. John voluntarily enlisted into the U.S. Navy on Sept. 21, 1943 at age 18 years 1 month, as an Able Seaman, Class V-6, USNR, SV. He then first reported to the United States Navy Training School at Great Lakes, IL and 8 days later was sent for Armed Guard Gunner Training at the Armed Guard School in Gulfport, MS. On Jan. 6, 1944, John was then transferred to the Anti-Aircraft Training in Shell Beach, LA. Johns first naval station assignment was to the armed guard center in New Orleans, LA. His commanding officer recorded in Johns Navy personnel record after only 3 months completion of the Navy Armed Guard Training courses, that his man was the first in his section to complete his progress test. He is studious and industrious. I consider him well qualified for this [new] rate. [advancement in rating to Seaman 1st Class]. On Feb. 1, 1944, John reported aboard the S.S. Chapultepec, a U.S. Navy Escort Airplane Carrier, which was a converted freighter that carried dive bombers, torpedo carriers and fighters, serving in the Eastern Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Theatre. He was detached again on May 25, 1945 to serve aboard the Liberty Ship, S.S. Lyman Hall.Liberty ships were cargo ships built in the United States during WW 11 under the American Merchant Marine Act. These ships formed the backbone of a supply line that enabled the Allies to wage total war against the Axis Powers. Liberty ships were nicknamed ugly ducklings by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Mostly all powered by steam turbines, Libertys carried a crew of about 44 sailors and 12 to 25 Naval armed guards. About 200 Libertys, including the two ships John was aboard were lost to torpedoes, mines, explosions, kamikazes, etc., during the war. Johns last transfer before being Honorably Discharged was to the U.S. Navy Recruiting Station and Armed Guard at South Brooklyn, N.Y. on Nov. 29, 1945. John was awarded the WW ll Victory Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and the Honorable Service Lapel Pin (Ruptured Duck) upon discharge on 29, 1946. Johns military service and before marriage, he worked at various jobs and occupations; as a carpenter he helped to rebuild and renovate his parents 6 room home and as a gas station mechanic in his brothers employment. Now residing in Irwin, PA as a faithful loving husband and dedicated father helping to raise his children, John was a member of St. Agnes Church in North Huntingdon Township, PA. John also worked at the Irman Cadillac Dealership in East Liberty, PA as an auto mechanic and at the GM/Fisher Body Plant in Monroeville, PA before moving his family to Austintown, seeking advancement opportunity at the newly constructed GM/Buick Division Assembly Plant in Lordstown Ohio where he proudly captured employment as the 13th worker hired in 1966. Performing his skill as a mechanic in the truck repair department of the plant, he advanced to a foreman/ supervisor position and eventually retired in early 1990. While living with his family in Austintown, John was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish and later moving to Columbiana he attended Saint Jude Parish. John was also a member of Knights of Columbus 3rd Degree St. Jude Council No. 10183 and 4th Degree Fr. Cavanaugh Assembly No. 3145; Boy Scouts of America, where he was a Scout Master to Troop 145 in Youngstown; the American Legion Post No. 290 in Columbiana; the VFW; the United Auto Workers, Local 1112 and the Mens Garden Club of Youngstown. John especially enjoyed dancing. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and travelling. Other hobbies included woodshop working and craft making. He also enjoyed car repair and restoration, especially working on Cadillacs. Johns wife of 57 years, the former Irene K. Kokladas, whom he married Jan. 31, 1953 at Sacret Heart Church in Pittsburgh, died Jan. 7, 2011. John is survived by his children, Mary K. Bootsie Bak and Roseanne Winner both of Austintown, OH, John R. JW Waldorf, Jr. of Cortland, OH, Susan (Robert) Bachinger, also of Austintown, OH and Amy (Robert) McEvoy of Strongsville, OH; sisters-in-law, MaryAnn (Steven) Marlowe of Murrysville and Jean Kokladas of Saltsburg, PA; his grandchildren, Edward Bak, Wendy (Rickie) Yeager, Jessica (Richard) Hartzell, Earl Winner, Erica (Joseph) Sauceman, Kayla Winner, Natalie Katherine Waldorf, Lauren (John) Mshar, Dana Bachinger, Ashton McEvoy, Robert McEvoy, Jr. and Briana McEvoy; his gr. grandchildren, Tyler Staub, Makenna, Cameron and Peyton Hartzell, Xavier and Kiera Winner, Ciera and Trever Sauceman and John Robert and Carson Anthony Mshar and many nieces and nephews.
