Obituary: HICKORY-Roy Lee Whitener, 82 of 4115 54th Avenue NE, Hickory, NC, passed-away in his sleep on 30th, 2016, at home in Hickory. Born 26, 1934, in Hickory, Roy was the loving husband of the late Verna Sigmon Whitener, of Catawba and son of the late Tollie Leroy and Ida Pitts Whitener; brother of Alfred, Toby, Mary Lou, Norma, Murl. Roy was an active as a member of St. Stephens Lutheran Church (Missouri Synod). He graduated from Hickory High School and voluntarily joined the U.S. Army. Roy was born into the family trade of home-building and was a master wood-worker. He built over 20 homes and created businesses, including Skyline Furniture, Power Sports (boats), and the Morganton-Lenoir Airport Operations. Roy was an accomplished pilot and flight instructor, holding almost every FAA Rating. He was known for commuting to work in his amphibious aircraft when he lived on Lake Hickory. Roy was preceded in death by his wife, Verna Sigmon Whitener, and their daughter, Vickie Ann Whitener. Survivors include daughter Rebecca Matthews of Hickory, granddaughter Danielle Matthews of Raleigh and grandsons Ryan and Luke Matthews of Hickory. Son Doug Whitener and wife Denise Whitener reside in San Diego, CA; granddaughter Victoria Whitener of Los Angeles, CA, and grandson Keoni Whitener of San Diego. The funeral service will be conducted by Pastor Ziehr and Pastor Guelzow, at St. Stephens Lutheran Church (Mo-Synod) on , 3 at 12:00 p.m. Burial will be in Catawba Memorial Park. Military Honors will be conducted by The American Legion Post 48. The family will receive in the church at 10:30-11:45 a.m., prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Stephens Lutheran Church (Missouri Synod), 2304 Springs Road NE Hickory, NC 28601. Obituary: Rebecca Jane Rierson Whitener, age 90 of Mocksville, NC went home to be with her Lord , 9th, 2016 after living a long and productive life; Born on 11th, 1926 to Mary and Horace Rierson. She will be missed by her husband of 69 years, Robert Ray Whitener of Mocksville, NC and one son Stephen Whitener (Kathy) of Kernersville, NC and one daughter Deborah Laird of Mocksville, NC. She also leaves behind 7 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren, one brother, David Rierson (Pat) of Lewisville, NC and three sisters, Mildred Robertson, Betty Rierson, and Earleen Rierson all of Winston-Salem, NC. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Rierson, two sisters, Helen Rierson and Peggy Logan. She resided for the past few years at the home of her daughter, Deborah Laird where she was loved and cared for by Deborah and granddaughter Tammy Lyons and other family members. Rebecca and Ray resided for many years at Robinwood Senior Living in Kernersville, NC where they also had many friends and acquaintances. Special thanks to Bermuda Commons and Rehab in Advance, NC and to the Liberty Hospice where she was given great care for the last month of her life. A graveside service will be held for Rebecca at Oaklawn Memorial Garden on 12th, 2016 at 11am. In honor of Rebeccas life, donations can be sent to the Liberty Hospice. Obituary: NATHAN JULIUS WHITENER CONOVER – Nathan Julius Whitener, 81, of Conover passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and close friends on the evening of 4, 2016 at Catawba Valley Medical , following a brief period of declining health. Nathan was born 9, 1934 in Catawba to the late Andrew Macon Whitener and Marie W. Whitener. Nathan graduated from Mountain View High School in 1952. He was an employee of Link Iron Works for 40 plus years as a boiler pipe fitter, then later a boiler service technician. Upon his retirement, Nathan received an award from the state of North Carolina for his service in the industry. Nathan was a member of Unity Evangelical Lutheran Church (formerly Good Hope Lutheran) in Hickory where he served as an usher and various other committees. He dearly loved his church and was a devoted member. He found great joy in his relationships with family, friends and neighbors. Nathan was a loyal volunteer of the St. Stephens Optimist Club for many years. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed sharing the proceeds of his garden with many family, friends, and neighbors. He had a caring nature and served as a caretaker for his father, daughter, and wife. He was a devoted sports fan, and enjoyed watching Tarheel basketball, Atlanta Braves baseball, and the Carolina Panthers football. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Myrtle Hefner Whitener; daughter, Lori Alice Whitener; brother, Eddie Andrew Whitener; and sister, Annette Whitener Medcalf. He is survived by daughter Debbie McGinnis and husband Lamar; son, Greg Whitener and wife Weatherly; grandchildren, Chris McGinnis, Nicholas McGinnis, Meghan McGinnis, Shauna Whitener and husband Lee Honeycutt; brothers, Jerry D. Whitener and wife Janey, Randall J. Whitener and wife Sue; sister-in-law, Barbara Whitener; and numerous nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on , 9, 2016 at 1:00 PM at Unity Evangelical Lutheran Church (Hickory) with Rev. John Woodard officiating. Burial will follow at Catawba Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 11:00 AM to 12:45 PM at the Church. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Unity Evangelical Lutheran Church (building fund), 3025 Falling Creek Rd NE, Hickory, NC 28601 or Catawba Regional Hospice, 3975 Robinson Rd, Newton, NC 28658.
