Obituary: Laura Lee Williams was born on 3, 1930 in Macon, North Carolina, to the late James Henry and Dora Bell Somerville. Laura was one of ten children. As a child, she attended the Pine Grove Baptist Church in Macon. In 1947 she married the love of her life, Clarence Williams Jr., and to this union was born nine daughters and three sons. In 1955, after hearing the Word of God preached on the radio by Bishop S.C. Johnson of Philadelphia, she was baptized in the name of Jesus at the Apostolic Church of Jesus in Norfolk, Virginia. Several years later, she found herself going through a severe test. Sitting on her back porch, she vowed to the Lord that if he would move her family out of the situation, I will serve you till I die! As so often happens when we pray, her prayers were answered and he did just that! He directed her path and moved her family to Cape May , New Jersey, to the growing community of Whitesboro. It was here that her husband was witnessed to about the goodness of the Lord by Elder Amos Mitchell and Elder Milton Matthews. were members of Christ Gospel Church and were pastored under the leadership of the late Elder John A. Small. Her husband, Clarence, was baptized in the name of Jesus and they both received the gift of the Holy Ghost at the original Christ Gospel Church on Anna St.. Sister Williams would often exclaim that she had never met any people like these Saints, who showed her family so much love. At Christ Gospel Church she established her roots of love by helping out wherever she saw fit. With the passing of Elder Small, she continued to serve at Christ Gospel and was pastored under the leadership of District Elder John W. Brooks until he passed on. Her service to the Lord continued even unto her death, under the leadership of Bishop Edgar D. Robinson, Jr. She served in many capacities at Christ Gospel and served faithfully in holding various offices, including as a teacher of both the Intermediate School class and the Adult School class, School Superintendent, a member of the Christ Gospel Missionary and Mass Choir. She went on to become Church Secretary, Assistant Treasurer, and a member of the Trustee Board and the Advisory Board. She was the organizer of the Willing Workers and the Sewing Club. She was instrumental in administering programs such as Vacation Bible School, the Ways and Means Committee and the John W. Brooks Scholarship Fund. In 1958, Sister Williams became a member of the New Jersey District Council of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World (NJDC-PAW), where over a span of the next 34 years she held the following offices: District Secretary, Secretary of the Young Ministry under the Presidency of Bishop James Churchwell, member of the Young and Missionary Choir, Secretary of the Pastors Aide under the late Evangelist Rhoda Rice, twelve (12) years as Assistant Superintendent of the School under Elder Frank Johnson, Sister Bertha Lane and Brother Michael Green, and twenty-eight (28) years as Treasurer, twelve of those years under Presiding Bishop Holbart Taliaferro, Presiding Bishop Thomas Streitferdt, and later Bishop Willie Burrell and Bishop Thomas Wesley Weeks. Sister Williams retired from her duties with the NJDC in 1991. She thoroughly enjoyed her celebration dinner with so many of you who are here with us today. She then continued her membership in the Council under Bishop Ronnie Amos. She would often share with us some of her many fond moments with her dearest friends in Christ, Brother James T. Hunter (deceased) and Mother Hattie Brooks Her hands were never idle. She worked in the local community as a Service Aide and as Head Cook for the Head Start Program. In 1992 she was employed as a Receptionist for the Cape May Human Resources Office, from which she finally retired in 1998. She loved and believed in nurturing and raising children in the way he or she should go. She demonstrated to so many that she had more than enough love to give away. One of the profound themes that her life story exemplifies to us is the belief that Love is not Love until it is given away. In what must have been one of the most traumatic events of her life, she experienced the most unenviable task of having to bury a young daughter, Annette, who succumbed to injuries incurred during a house fire. The depth of profound grief and sorrow in having to process such a loss is immeasurable. It was during such times that she remained most steadfast in her faith in God and the belief that he would always make a way out of no way. A tragedy of this proportion has the potential to leave an eternal stain on the fabric of the family unit. However, primarily through the efforts of caring parents and the helping hands of a supportive church and community, the family was able to get through the initial trauma of this profound loss. Every family has its challenges but thanks be to God that he never burdens us with more than we can bear. It is the internal dynamics of a loving family unit that ultimately serves to preserve the bonds and diminish the negative impact of any of lifes challenges. In recognition of the key role played as a surrogate to her mother, Ma communicated an explicit instruction that her oldest daughter, Bessie LeFra, be recognized as the loving and dedicated surrogate she has proven to be to the immediate family, time and time again, over many years. Sister Williams envisioned and recognized that the thankless role that Bessie was thrust into, as the oldest of the siblings, could not be executed without some degree of interference from the occasional doubter or detractor. When we look back over our life, and think things over, it goes without saying that it takes continued... |
