Obituary: William Howard Windhausen, 78, of Lees Summit, passed away in the presence of his loving family on 12, 2012, after a short but courageous battle with several difficult ailments. Howard will be missed every day by those who loved him, including the many friends that he acquired over the years through his caring, capable, and generous nature, his humor and genial spirit, his wide-ranging knowledge and skill, and his benevolence to those near to him and to the community. Howard was born on 1, 1933 in Waverly, Missouri, to Harry and Elizabeth (Bear) Windhausen. He graduated from Northeast High School in 1951, then joined United Funds during the earliest days of data processing as a computer technician. While there, he met Vanita Cleveland, who became his lifelong partner when they married in 1953. Howard joined the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, spending his tour of duty at Fort Riley and Fort Benning. Re-entering civilian life, Howard joined the Bendix Corporation (later Allied Signal / Honeywell), where he spent his entire career and rose through the ranks to become a manager and consultant for software and system design. Howard retired in 1990, dedicating his time to his family and to community activities. He was a caring grandfather to his five grandchildren (ABCDE: Alan, Brett, Caris, Drew, and Eric), and he was a constant presence and central parental figure in the lives of Drew and Eric as they grew up in the vicinity. All his grandchildren (and his children) love, respect, and honor Papa for the multitude of selfless things he did for them, always without their having to ask. Howard joined the Prairie Village Lions Club in 1970, rapidly becoming an active member and then a Club leader. He served in a number of positions, including President (1978, 1979, and 2001), and was the driving force behind several club activities (particularly the annual Christmas Tree drive). Howard later transferred to the Lake Winnebago Lions, quietly and quickly assuming lead roles there as well. Howard greatly enjoyed camping vacations with his wife and family, both locally and across the West. He also highly valued time with family and supporting family activities, and could always be counted on to be there for every school or sporting event, to take care of chores, and to lend a hand in every possible way. Papa, we all love you and will miss you more than we can say. The family would like give special recognition and thanks to the extraordinary care Howard received from the staff at John Knox Village during his time there, particularly from his nurse Felicia. We e very grateful for the effort you put toward his healthcare, and that you made his stay as comfortable as it could be. Howard was preceded in death by his parents and by a sister, Charlotte. He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife and partner, Vanita, of the home, his daughter Cheryl Reid and grandsons Drew and Eric of Lees Summit, his son Richard Windhausen, wife Perrian, and grandchildren Alan, Brett, and Caris of Boulder Colorado, and his brothers Carl of Kansas City and Joseph of Independence. A memorial and celebration of his life will be held at noon on , 14, at Mount Moriah & Freeman , 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri, immediately followed by services at 1:00. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Howards name to the American Cancer Society, http://www.cancer.org/donate. Friends can share thoughts and memories with the family at www.mtmoriah-freeman.com. under the direction of Mount Moriah & Freeman , Kansas City, MO. |
