Donald Arthur Weems, born October 16, 1932 passed away peacefully November 13, 2016 in Saint Louis, Missouri. Donald was 84. Obituary: Reverend Dr. Donald A. Weems, passed away peaceably, after a lengthy illness, on 13, 2016, in St. Louis, MO, where he had lived for over 50 years. He was 84. He was surrounded by his daughter and her family, who had cared for him for many years.

Don grew up in Atlanta, GA, the son of Clarence Weems and Florence Wimberly Weems. He was always playing 20 Questions with the family, where invariably the answer was Georgia or Atlanta, as he loved his home state.

Don is survived by his sister Louise Smart, and sister-in-laws Jane Barr Stump, Judy Barr, and Wanda Barr; his children, Stuart Weems and daughter-in-law Catherine Oliver-Weems, David Weems, and Heather Weems-Elliott and son-in-law Marcus Elliott; his grandchildren Millie Phillips and her husband Chris Phillips, Barrett Weems and his wife Michelle Weems, Christopher Simmons, Alexandria Ann and Sofia Marie Elliott, and Douglas Weems; his great-grandchildren Cristian Ferrari, Barrett Weems, Jr., Mackenzie Phillips, and Marissa Ann Weems. He loved every one of us dearly.
Don is predeceased by his wife of nearly 60 years, Ann Barr Weems, and his beloved son Todd C. Weems.

Don attended Peabody , in Nashville, TN at an early age, then Vanderbilt University, followed by McCormick Seminary in Chicago, with his doctorate coming from Harvard University. He was ordained in the Presbyterian Church in 1957. He deplored prejudice, racism, and bigotry, and strove to include all peoples in his life and faith, which led Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to ask him to serve his ministry in the south. His faith, however, would lead him to several churches in Illinois, and St. Louis, where he took the call as head pastor at Trinity Presbyterian Church, serving there for over 35 years. During that time, he also served the national church, as Chair and Vice-Chair on several committees, as well as serving as Moderator of the Giddings-Lovejoy Presbytery, for two years, during the church reunion of the 1980s.

His life at Trinity was his heart and soul, and a celebration of Gods world: the diverse and wonderful congregation; family services; midnight Christmas processions; mission trips; choral music and jazz bands; rainbows and banners - the celebration of all of Gods gifts.

Christmas was the ultimate time of keeping Gods faith, with gifts for friends and family, gathered from his many travels.

Memorial services will be 1 PM, , 19, at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 6800 Washington Avenue, University City. The graveside service will follow immediately at Oak Grove , on St. Charles Rock Road in St. Louis.

In lieu of flowers, please give all gifts of remembrance for Donald A. Weems, to the Weems-Scholin Scholarship Fund at Trinity Presbyterian Church.

Dons wife, Ann, in dedicating her first book, to him, wrote: To Don, who leaves rainbows in his path.

under the direction of Gerber Chapel, Webster Groves, Missouri.

Obituary: Ann Barr Weems passed away at the age of 81 on 17, 2016, in St. Louis, Missouri, where she lived for over fifty years, due to complications from a brain tumor.

Mrs. Weems was born on 9, 1934 in Nashville, Tennessee. Her father was Thomas Calhoun Barr, also of Nashville, a Presbyterian Minister. Her mother, Gladys Hutchison Barr, of Albany, New York, was a lawyer and an author of seven historical novels and childrens books, including The Bell Witch at Adams.

Ann Weems was a noted writer, speaker, liturgist and worship leader. Among her seven published books or collections of poems, meant to be used in worship, in personal devotions, and in discussions, are Kneeling in Jerusalem, Kneeling in Bethlehem and the best-selling Psalms of Lament. She is also the author of the critically-acclaimed poem, Balloons Belong in Church, about her then four-year old son, Todd, who brought an orange balloon with pink stripes to church school one morning.

The memorial service will be held at 1pm on , 21, 2016, at Trinity Presbyterian Church, located at 6800 Washington Avenue in St. Louis. In lieu of flowers, please give a memorial for Ann B. Weems, to either the Presbyterian Peace Fellowship, or St. Jude Children's Hospital.

The following is excerpted from Balloons Belong in Church, by Ann Weems:

I took to church one morning a happy four-year-old boy
Holding a bright blue string to which was attached
his much loved orange balloon with pink stripes...
He didn't have to tell me something had gone wrong
Out it came, then -- mocking the teacher's voice, "We don't bring balloons to church."
Then that little four-year old, his lip a little trembly, asked:
"Why aren't balloons allowed in church? I thought God would like balloons."
I celebrate children
who walk in the mud and dawdle in the puddles
who like to be tickled
who bury their goldfish, sleep with the dog,
who hug us in a hurry and rush outside without their hats
Life is a celebration, an affirmation of God's love
Life is distributing more balloons.
For God so loved the world...
Surely that's a cause for Joy.
Where did we ever get the idea that balloons don't belong in the church?
