Obituary: Dwight Williams, 87 of Blytheville, died 17, 2015 in Jonesboro. Born to Ellis and Myrtle Williams in Beach Grove, Arkansas he was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Blytheville. Dwight went on to become a successful Coach, Teacher, Principle and Administrator. He enjoyed his family immensely and shared many good times and years of happiness. Dwight Coach Williams was an individual whose life touched and taught many young people. He possessed a very special talent and ability to pass on his knowledge of baseball to others. However, it didn stop there for he also had the ability to measure and see the potential in each young mans life that he coached. You couldn help but become a better person and a source of strength for others as you pass on that which you learned under his coaching. He would strive to mold you into the best you could be on and off the field. He would ask and expect no more than he would expect from his self. Following is a brief history of the man and his success in sports and the education field. Born and raised in Beech Grove, Arkansas, he would go on to achieve and be recognized for many outstanding accomplishments during his lifetime. At Beech Grove High School, he played baseball and basketball. In baseball he was the Run and RBI leader as their teams won the county tournaments all four years and he was named to the all-district teams in both baseball and basketball. He also played Semi-Pro Baseball with Caraway, Beech Grove, Rector and Holcomb, Missouri. Beech Grove had the best Semi- Pro team in North East Arkansas for the 10 years he played winning the 1950 and 1951 Missouri State Championship and Arkansas State Championship at Rector. He played minor league ball in 1949 for Helena in the Cotton States League which was owned by the Detroit Tigers and in 1950 played for Jackson, Tennessee in the Kitty League which was owned by the Cleveland Indians. Following those past two years, he returned to Arkansas State University and graduated with a Bachelors degree in 1954. Earlier, as a basketball player in 1946 at A.S.U., he learned the one handed jump shot playing against DePaul University. had a player named George McMikan who was the most outstanding player in the country at that time. Their team shot a one handed jump shot and upon returning to ASU, the team spent a lot of time learning and practicing this shot. He eventually mastered the one handed jump shot which he would utilize in a successful manner for many years. His first coaching job was in 1947 at Beech Grove High School. He taught his team the one handed jump shot becoming the first team in N.E. Arkansas to utilize this shot. In 1947 his team won its first district tournament in the schools history. This was a team that had no gym and did most of their practicing outside. Sometime later, in the early 1950s, Beech Grove consolidated with Greene Tech in Paragould, Arkansas. In 1952, he was hired by Greene Tech to coach baseball and basketball which would last for ten years. His baseball team in 1962 had the longest winning streak (32 games, won the conference championship in both baseball and basketball, had an undefeated season (16-0) and won the State High School Baseball Championship. In 1963, he was hired by Blytheville High School. While at Blytheville as basketball coach his record was 187 wins and only 72 losses, (72.2%). His teams won four conference championships in the ten years coaching at Blytheville. While in Blytheville he was selected in 1964, to coach the American Legion Baseball team. His career as A Cason American Legion baseball Coach was 380 wins and 102 losses (78.7%). During this nine year period his teams won eight district championships and three State Championships. In 1970 his team had the longest winning streak in American Legion Baseball (42 games). In 1971 his team was 52-11 and finished runner up in the regional tournament. He had the privilege of coaching Mark Little who pitched for the St. Louis Cardinals and Randy Smith (who was the number 1 draft choice in 1971) and pitched for the California Angels organization. There were many other players who went on to play pro ball and college athletics. In 1974 he went to Newport as Jr. High Principle and American Legion Baseball Coach. He coached the Newport teams to seven winning seasons and District Champions twice. On 22, 1979, he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. The award was presented by Orville Moore (Arkansas State Commissioner) and Harry Davis, president of the National Semi-Pro Hall of Fame. Coaching basketball and baseball was an integral part of his and his familys life. All four of my sons became successful high school coaches. He earned his Superintendents Certificate in education in 1976 at Arkansas State University. retiring from coaching at Newport, he devoted 16 years to working in education. He became the Superintendent at McCrory, Arkansas, the Kennett, Missouri Principal and the Hayti, Missouri Principal. He served in public school systems for 44 years in both Arkansas and Missouri with twenty eight years as a devoted and dedicated basketball and baseball coach. He retired from this highly successful and rewarding career in 1993. Through his love for the games of basketball and baseball and education he touched the lives of countless people who will be forever grateful. His greatest gift was to help you bring forth the best qualities you possessed. Most importantly, it didn matter whether it was sports or any kind of profession or job. He would smile, shake your hand and help guide you in the right direction. The rest he knew was up to you. Dwight was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Grace Marie Taylor Williams, the mother of Dwights six children and brothers, Nolan and Tyler Williams. He is survived by his continued... |
