Obituary: Shirley Back Wallis passed away 8, 2017 at Brookdale Senior Living. She was born 21, 1926 at St. Lukes Hospital in Duluth, Minnesota to John and Esther Back. were both Swedish immigrants from Finland. The family already included an adopted brother, John Edwin; and an adopted sister, Marion Esther. The family spoke Swedish in those early days in America. Shirley graduated in 1944 from Duluth Central High School. In 1945, she married William Kennedy, former editor of the Fort Smith Times Record. Two children, Patricia and Ross, were born to that marriage which lasted 26 years. lived in California for 15 years where Shirley attended Cabrillo and Foothills s while raising the children. In 1974, she married Colonel Joel D. Wallis of Shawnee, Oklahoma. his retirement from military service, they enjoyed traveling Europe, Mexico, Asia and the world. especially enjoyed the Scandinavian countries where they met many cousins and friends, and Shirley was happy to relearn the Swedish language, customs and music she had known as a child. In 1980 Shirley and her best friend and husband, Joel, built their country home on 15 acres near Van Buren, doing most of the work themselves. While working on the house, Shirley also worked as an interpreter for the Fort Chaffee Fire Department while the Cubans were being relocated from there. In 2003, she was blessed with her only grandchild, Jasmine Maria Kennedy, daughter of son, Ross and Josie of Hot Springs. Daughter, Patricia moved back to Fort Smith from California in 2002. Joel and Shirley are members of St. Luke Lutheran Church since 1988. She is survived by her husband, Joel Wallis; daughter, Patricia Kennedy; son, Ross Kennedy; granddaughter, Jasmine Kennedy; and Jasmines mother, Josie Packard; and her cousin, Hendrickson of Minnesota. She is also survived by her stepson, David Wallis and his wife Liz and sons, Carl and Leigh and many cousins and friends in Finland and Sweden. Visitation will be at Edwards from 5:30 PM-7:00 PM. Memorial service will be 3:00 PM at St. Luke Lutheran Church with Pastor Laird Duran officiating. Private family burial will be at the U.S. National in Fort Smith. are under the direction of Edwards . Obituary: Jackie T Wallis was born Feb. 28, 1943 in the little farm house where his parents, JT and Ruth made their home. He was actually born premature and placed in a shoebox in a drawer. He was named Moses Green after his grandfather but even early on showed his independent character by changing his name to Jackie Terry Wallis after his dad. Most of his life was spent traveling in order to follow work and he and the family lived in number of states from time to time but always returning to the little plot of ground in Velvet Ridge Arkansas where he considered his permanent home. It was on one of these trips to the Kansas oil fields where he met the girl who would be his wife. being wed he brought her home to the little farm in AR where they would raise their two children. He dug a well and built their home from the rocks from the very ground where he walked, played and farmed as a child. He is survived by his wife, Connie (Mead) Wallis; son, Shayne Wallis (Michelle) of Searcy; grandson, Eli Wallis; daughter, Jacque Lynn (Wallis) Jones (Lonnie) of Huntsville, Alabama; granddaughter, Loni Beth Watkins (Tyler); sister, Evelyn (Wallis) Waller (Allen) of Dewitt, Michigan; 29 Special nieces and nephews. He passed peacefully from this life 18, 2015 3:30 in the afternoon at home in the presence of his beloved Connie and son, Shayne... about 20 feet from the spot where he was born. His wife of 51 years, children and grandchildren will celebrate his life and share their memories at the Velvet Ridge Church of Christ fellowship hall on , 22, 2015. No formal service. The visitation and closing of the casket will be from 1:00- 3:00 pm. Immediately following the visitation, a Celebration of Life reception will begin for ALL friends and family, food will be served. Jackie won be there.
