Obituary: William James Westervelt, Sr. of Bel Air, MD passed away of heart failure on , 10, 2014 with family by his side. He was 98 years old. Born in Brooklyn, NY on 23, 1916 he was raised in his familys home in the small village of Alpine, NJ. He attended the two room Alpine school where he met his future wife, Janet Dorothy Cole. graduation from the Alpine school in 1929, he attended Tenafly High School in Tenafly, NJ graduating in the class of 1933. The son of Captain William H. Westervelt, who owned a fleet of tugboats in New York Harbor, Bill worked on his fathers tugs and attended Pratt Institute of Technology in Brooklyn. He graduated from Pratt in 1940 with a degree in Industrial Engineering. He and Janet Cole were married on 6, 1941 in the small Methodist church in Alpine and made their first home there. During World War II he worked for the Aluminum of America (Alcoa) in Edgewater, NJ. He also learned to fly small airplanes from Teterboro Airport as part of the Civil Air Patrol during the war. He and Janet moved their growing family to Tenafly, NJ in 1948 so the children could attend the Tenafly schools. He worked as an engineer for the Air Reduction in Union, NJ and then became a Management Consultant for the Alexander Proudfoot . In 1964 the family moved to Bel Air, MD when Bill began work at Eastern Stainless Steel in Baltimore. Eastern Stainless he entered the Real Estate sales business with Ward and Bosely Realtors in Bel Air. 50 years of marriage, he lost his beloved Janet to breast cancer in 1992 but remained in their family home on Linwood Avenue in Bel Air. In 2014 he moved to Lorien Assisted Living in Bel Air where he lived until his death. He was able to return to Lorien after his recent heart attack where he was cared for, with his family by his side, by an attentive and caring Lorien staff. Bill was an early fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team and later the Baltimore Orioles. He was also a fan of the New York Football Giants and later the Baltimore Ravens. He frequently watched and attended Chesapeake Bayhawks and Philadelphia Wings Lacrosse games. He enjoyed watching his sons and daughter play sports at Bel Air High School and later watching his grandchildren play sports at John Carroll School and Joppatowne High School and Shepard University, Salisbury University and UMBC. He loved watching and playing golf and was a member of the Winters Run Golf Course where he belonged to the Geritol group. In their retirement he and Janet were able to make several vacation trips to the western part of the United States. also enjoyed summer trips to Bethany Beach, DE and visiting with relatives in Virginia, upstate New York and Shelter Island, NY. He was predeceased by his parents, Captain William H. and Rosalie May Westervelt (nee Gildersleeve; his parents in-law Fredrick and Dorothy Cole (nee Nelson; his sister and brother in law, Rosalie M. and Col. Carmon A. Rogers; his brother and sister in law Clayton R. and Mary D. Westervelt. He was also predeceased by his wifes brothers and sisters, Warren Cole, George Spieldenner, William and Eileen Cole, Michael and Marjorie Fitzpatrick, and Gifford and Ruth Cole. He is survived by five children: Elaine Westervelt Strovel of Bel Air, Sandra Lee Westervelt of Bel Air, William James Westervelt, Jr. and his wife Laura (nee Russell) of Arnold, MD; David Warren Westervelt and his wife Joyce (nee Coale) of Bel Air; and Leslie Ann Westervelt of Bel Air. Four grandchildren: Christopher William Strovel and his wife Cynthia of Martinsburg, WV, David Warren Westervelt, Jr. and his wife Sarah of Bel Air; Jennifer Westervelt Mettee and her husband Gregory of Bel Air; and Drew Coale Westervelt of Baltimore. Eight great grandchildren: William and Addyson Strovel of Martinsburg, WV, Anna, James and Matthew Westervelt of Bel Air; Graham Mettee of Bel Air and step great grandchildren Nikki and Kelsey Ashbaugh of Martinsburg, WV. Obituary: ELIZABETH LAURA VAN DEN BERG WESTERN On , 30, 2015, Elizabeth Laura van den Berg Western, of Annapolis, Maryland and formerly of Chevy Chase, Maryland, died peacefully at Ginger Cove Retirement after a short illness. She was 79. The third of five children of the late Elizabeth King and Oliver Wolcott van den Berg (Col., U.S. Army), Elizabeth, or Button, as she was known to her family, was born at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma on May 5, 1936, and grew up at U.S. Army posts in Oklahoma, Louisiana, Virginia, Maryland, and Missouri. She was the granddaughter of the late Martha Egerton and Fleet Admiral Ernest J. King (U.S. Navy), of Washington, D.C., and the late Laura Wolcott and Professor Henri Jacobus van den Berg, of Urbana, Illinois. Mrs. Western was a 1954 graduate of National Cathedral School for Girls, Washington, D.C. and a 1958 graduate of the University of Missouri, Columbia, where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta fraternity. She received a Master’s degree in education from The American University, Washington, D.C. For more than 30 years, Mrs. Western was a classroom teacher and, later, teacher’s aide in the Montgomery , Maryland public school system. On 30, 1963, she married Harvey Joe Western, of Brookfield, Missouri, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Webster Groves, Missouri. lived in Alexandria, Virginia, and, in 1965, settled in Chevy Chase, Maryland, where they welcomed the arrival of their two children, Daniel Cotter Western and Martha van den Berg Western. A weekend cottage in the Sherwood Forest Club eventually became their primary residence before moving to Ginger Cove in 2012. Mrs. Western had a keen mind, a great sense of humor, a love of laughter, and an appreciation of a good joke. She was a superb hostess and thrived in the company of family and friends. An accomplished and adventurous cook, the Westerns and four other couples formed a monthly gourmet dinner club to prepare menus from Gourmet magazine in the 1970s that continues to this day. A beach lover, the Westerns shared a Southern Shores, North Carolina beach cottage, The Wayfarer, with close friends Lois and Jack Coon, and, from 1973 to 1981, spent many happy times there. Always active, her hobbies included tennis, reading, bridge, genealogy, and train travel, and she and Joe enjoyed attending local theater and musical productions. She was a member of Sherwood Forest’s multiple book and bridge clubs that kept her sharp and up-to-date with friends. Elizabeth was a kind and caring person as evidenced by her faithful letter writing, often taking the time to include newspaper clippings of particular interest to specific family and friends. A descendant of Leonard Calvert, the first colonial governor of Maryland, she was a member of the National Society of Colonial Dames in the State of Maryland and the Society of the Ark and the Dove. Elizabeth was a loyal member of the Caritas Society of St. John’s and participated in many events to benefit students at the . She was active with her churches, All Saints’ Episcopal Church, Chevy Chase, Maryland, and St. Anne’s Church, Annapolis, Maryland, and was devoted in her faith. Dearest to her was her affiliation with Kappa Alpha Theta and the alumnae chapters and committees with which she was active until recently. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughter Martha (Mimi) Western, of Baltimore, Maryland, and her son, Daniel Western (wife, Samantha), of Gaithersburg, Maryland; a grandson, Wyatt Danser (partner, Holly Scott), of Baltimore, two granddaughters Madison Woolworth and Delaney Western, both of Gaithersburg; and, a great-grandson Wyatt Danser, Jr., of Baltimore. Also surviving are sisters, Martha van den Berg Slaughter (husband, Harry) and Margaret Wilson van den Berg, both of Easton, Maryland; brother Egerton King van den Berg (wife, Nancy), of Winter Park, Florida; and 22 nieces and nephews; numerous cousins, and, as Elizabeth liked to say, “a world of friends”. She was predeceased by her brother Oliver Wolcott van den Berg (Lt. Col., USMC); and, sisters- and brothers-in-law (Western) and James Cowan, Alma W. van den Berg, and Mildred and Tex Western. A memorial service will be held on , 20, at 11:00am at St. Anne’s Church, Church Circle, Annapolis, Maryland, with a reception following at the Sherwood Forest Club Stewart Hall, 134 Sherwood Forest Road, Annapolis. Burial, at St. James’ Church, Lothian, Maryland, will be private.
