Obituary: ROY HOLLIS PETE WITHERINGTON COX FUNERAL HOME BASTROP, LOUISIANA Please join the family for visitation and celebration of the life of Mr. Roy Hollis Pete Witherington, life long resident of Bastrop, Louisiana, on 26th, from 2:00 P.M. until 4:00 P.M. at Cox of Bastrop. Mr. Pete was born May 1, 1919 in Locust Bayou, Arkansas and he passed away on 23, 2016 in Bastrop, Louisiana. He was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-nine years, Vera Katherine Darden Witherington, his parents, Harry Houston and Flossie Buskirk Witherington, two brothers, Bobby Witherington and Raymond Witherington, four sisters, Johnnie Carlson, India Hollingsworth, Nell Coston, and Marilu Morphew, and grandchildren, Kara Gilbert and Ryan Witherington. Mr. Pete Witherington moved to Bastrop in 1941. While living in the boarding house of William and Vivian Darden he met and later married the love of his life, their daughter, Katherine Darden Witherington. Together they shared a wonderful life filled with family and friends. both loved to dance and listen to music. Pete joined the Army during World War II and served as a medic in India. Returing to Bastrop after the war and service to his country , he met for the first time his three year old son, Roy Witherington, Jr. Pete started his career in sales at the Charles Snyder Department Store on the square in downtown Bastrop. He later went on to operate and own several sucsessful full service gas stations in the Bastrop and Perryville area and he was a member of several civic organizations. However, his real claim to fame were his children and grandchildren. There was never a dull moment when they were around their daddy and papaw. He will be greatly missed by all. Mr. Witherington is survived by his son, Roy Hollis Witherington, Jr. and his wife, Jeanette Moore Witherington, his daughter, Kathy Darden Witherington Gilbert and her husband, Gary Michael Gilbert, his four grandsons, Hollis Witherington and his wife, Beverly Bass Witherington, Chandler Witherington and his wife, Kasey Gentry Witherington, Kory Michael Gilbert and his wife, Mindy Kelley Gilbert, and Garrett Darden Gilbert, and his granddaughter, Natalie Kate Gilbert Pauley and her husband, George Pauley. He is also survived by eight great-grandchildren, Katie Witherington, Anna Claire Witherington, John Collin Witherington, Luke Witherington, Sarah Beth Witherington, Jamie Bass Nichols and her husband, Luke Nichols, Samuel Gilbert, and Emma Katherine Gilbert, and two great-great-grandchildren, Jenny Nichols and Hattie Anne Nichols. The family wishes to extend a special thank-you to Dr. E.D. Baker for his friendship, compassion, and care. Also, many thanks to the wonderful staff of Lagniappe care. |
