Obituary: Patricia Lee (Rand) Worthen of Cottonwood, Arizona, beloved wife and devoted, loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and mother-in-law, died after a lengthy illness on , 23, 2016, in Select Specialty Hospital at St. Josephs Hospital & Medical , Phoenix, Arizona. The eldest and only girl of four children born to the late Phillip and Alice Rand, Pats birth on 5, 1944 in Lynn, Massachusetts, occurred on the very day her father was in route to the South Pacific and the Island of Guadalcanal. As a U.S. Air Force fighter-pilots dependent, Pat experienced the extremes of Okinawa, when among the first military dependents permitted on the island following World War II, to that of the Cold War base at Ernest Harmon Air Force Base, Stephenville, Newfoundland in the mid-50s, with multiple state-side bases in between them. A move to Phoenix in 1958 lead to meeting, marrying, and living a loving life of 55 years with her high school sweetheart. Pat was a dedicated mother, supportive wife, and an active participant in the experiences and adventures encountered through 11 moves while residing in seven states, among them: church choir member; elementary school volunteer; semi-professional womens chorus member; team Mom and #1 sports rooter; dance and acrobatics school enthusiast; Girl Scout volunteer; multi-mile mall walker; runway model; and hospital volunteer. Pat retired as a middle school special education instructional assistant in 1995. She was: an active member of the Episcopal Church since high school, lastly at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Clarkdale, Arizona; a grateful member of A.A.; a member of Beta Sigma Phi International for 50 years, an honor she celebrated with Cottonwoods Alpha Lambda Master chapter; and an early member and promoter of the Arthritis, Fibromyalgia & Other Pain-Related Diseases Support Group at Verde Valley Medical , where she was also a persistent participant in Entire Rehab & Sports Medicines outpatient physical therapy maintenance program, earning the title, NuStep Champ in her use of the seated recumbent cross trainer. Pats life was enriched by the many hats she wore and the relationships wrought by them; may her generosity, compassion, and love have brought a full measure to those whose lives she touched. Following a traumatic brain injury in 2006, with prayers, loving thoughts and friendship of family and friends through the ensuing years, Pat lived in hope and joy, with dignity, courage, and gratitude. She waged a valiant fight against the resulting multiple-health issues in her life, including the 2015 diagnosis of carcinoid (cancer) syndrome, bearing witness to "Let Go and Let God", taking it all "One Day at a Time", if not by hours or minutes, and by doing the hard work of healing and recovery, returning time and again for yet another day. Embracing rather than running from difficulty, her love, strength, and willingness to never give up will continue to live on by all that were blessed to have known her. Memories are her great gift and the legacy for which we are so thankful. Pat is survived by her loving family: husband, Lee Worthen; son Kenyon (Patti) Worthen; daughter Leanne (Cindy) Worthen; grandchildren Cassandra, Kenyon II, Xander, and Emilee; great granddaughter Makenzie; brothers Stephen (Elaine) Rand, Christopher (Becky) Rand, and Robin (Kim) Rand; brothers-in-law James (Shirl) Worthen and Robert (Caroline) Worthen; and a host of Worthen-Rand nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is also survived by numerous extended Thompson and Stoddard family members, as well as many dear friends across the country. Family and friends are invited to share in the joy of her ever-living presence at a Celebration of Life to be held at 4:30 p.m. on , 3, 2016, in the Cottonwood Quality Inns Conference & Banquet facility, 301 W. State Route 89A, Cottonwood AZ. Memorial gifts may be made in Pats name to the Carcinoid Cancer Foundation, 333 Mamaroneck Avenue # 492, White Plains NY 10605-1440, or donate on the foundation's Website: www.carcinoid.org. by A.L. Moore-Grimshaw Mortuary, Phoenix, AZ. Information provided by survivors. |

Obituary: Charles "Garth" Worthen (1952 - 2014) Charles "Garth" Worthen, 61, passed away suddenly at his home in Yuma, Arizona, on , 10th, 2014. He was born on 25, 1952 in Yuma. Garth was devoted to his community and gave freely of his time and talent. As a longtime volunteer with the Yuma Jaycees, his generosity was aptly rewarded \ royally, you might say \ when, on 17, 1992, he married the 1983 Yuma Jaycees Rodeo Queen, Mary Gordon. graduating from Kofa High School in 1970, Garth joined the U.S. Army National Guard. Later he worked for Gilpins, Tanner, Fisher Dodge and Alexander Ford, and, most recently with McNeece Brothers Oil , as manager of its 4th Avenue Shell Convenience store. 23 years with the company, he was preparing to retire on 31st of this year. In addition to the Jaycees, which he served as Rodeo chairman in 1982, Garth was instrumental in helping to establish the Yuma Jaycees Foundation. He also volunteered with the Marine Corps League, working tirelessly to ensure the success of numerous events and activities, from golf tournaments to toy drives during the holidays. On the subject of holidays, Garth was Father Christmas, complete with the twinkle in his sky-blue eyes. Many locals still remember when he and his wife, Mary, used to dress up as Mr. and Mrs. Claus and give out candy at their home \ transformed into a winter wonderland by Garth's own gifted hand. But mostly, for Garth, Christmas \ and every day \ was about friends and family, including the four-legged and feathered ones that shared in his life. Garth enjoyed cruising around in his Kawasaki Tyrek side by side with his dogs riding shot-gun. He loved camping with friends, riding his Harley, and hunting. He was an enthusiastic fan of the San Diego Chargers and NASCAR, attending many races. He was a proficient welder and honed his horticultural skills as de facto gardener for his sister-in-law, Joyce. Garth loved his family deeply and that love was reciprocated. He leaves behind a huge hole in many hearts. Garth was blessed with a keen intelligence and a lively curiosity, and he pursued a wide variety of interests. He was a social and outgoing individual, but he also had a very private side, comfortable in his own company. One of his latest passions was flying remote control planes. With his feet planted on terra firma, Garth would take flight with those planes \ his spirit and imagination soaring up to the clouds and beyond, into skies as blue as his laughing eyes. Garth is survived by his loving wife, Mary (Gordon) Worthen of Yuma; daughter Tanya Worthen of Phoenix; sister Marsha Carter of Tucson; brothers Joe Worthen and sister-in-law Kaweah, and Elton Worthen all of Yuma; three grandchildren, three nephews, several cousins; mother-in-law Helen "Marie" Gordon and sister-in-law Joyce Gordon, both of Yuma. He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles Albert Worthen and Lois Ione (Beebe) Worthen. would have been proud of how deftly he stepped into their shoes \ large ones to fill \ and took care of his siblings going from a brother to the Big Brother. A service will be held at Johnson Mortuary on , 20th at 11 a.m. with a Celebration of Life to follow at the Yuma Jaycees Clubhouse. In Lieu of flowers, the family would like donations made to the Yuma Humane Society and Wounded Warrior Foundation. under the direction of Johnson Mortuary & Desert Lawn Memorial Park, Yuma, AZ. |
