Obituary: Maxine Eloise Henderson Werner, the daughter of Ruth Henderson Culver and Carl Henderson was born 27, 1921 in rural Kent, Iowa. She passed away , 27, 2014 at Mt. Ayr at the age of 93. Maxine graduated from Creston High School in 1939 and received her teaching certificate in 1940 from Creston Community and her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1978 from Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa. She was united in marriage on May 26, 1940 to Darrel Werner of Shannon City, Iowa. To this union three children were born: Nancy, Steve and Jeffrey. Darrel and Maxine farmed south of Creston the first year of their marriage. The remaining years were spent within a two mile radius of the family home in rural Shannon City. Maxine, a town girl, was thrust into county life and learned quickly the duties of a farmwife. She worked beside Darrel for sixty years raising cattle, hogs, sheep, turkeys, chickens, gardening and cooking for hired hands. Maxine taught for 30 years in the East Union school district starting as a fifth grade teacher and ending as a special education reading instructor. She loved her students and always spoke fondly of her coworkers. Those teaching years were special and Maxine always said that her teaching was like a vacation! She was a member of BF P.E.O. and a lifetime member of the Retired Teachers Association. Maxine enjoyed reading, dancing and the neighborhood clubs. Family always took priority and Maxine loved being a grandmother, great grandmother and great great grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Jeffrey, granddaughter Jan Kelly, brother Bill Henderson and brothers in law Dick Garland and Elton Werner. Maxine is survived by daughter Nancy Kelly and husband Mike; son Steve and wife Marilyn; four grandchildren, Julie Ingram, Melissa Stenberg, Amanda Getschman and Brandon Werner; ten great grandchildren, five great, great grandchildren; four sisters in law, Marjorie Werner, Doris Garland, Carol Bryan husband Dean and Viola Henderson and other relatives and friends. |

Obituary: Marjorie Werner, 94, of Tingley, Iowa, passed away 24, 2015, at the Mount Ayr in Mt. Ayr, Iowa. She was born 4, 1920, in Lenox, Iowa, to Joshua Joker and Merzetta (Fender) Hillebran. She attended school in Beaconsfield through the 11th grade. She graduated from Tingley High School in 1938. She married Elton Werner on 16, 1941, in Shannon City, Iowa. She spent most of her life in Ringgold except for two years in California. Marjorie helped Elton on the farm while also running the Southside Café in Tingley as well as cooking for other cafes in the area. She also was a nurses aide and activity coordinator at the Mount Ayr for several years as well as being a Hospice volunteer for a few years. Marjorie was a lover of music and dancing. In her youth, Marjorie, her sisters, and their father performed at many social events and dances. In high school she played saxophone in a dance band on the weekends. This love of music was later expressed through her leadership and participation with the Tingley Kitchen Band, Singers, and The Echoes. Marjorie was a member of the Tingley Methodist Church and was also active in Republican Womens Group, Evening Literature Club, Creative Writing, T-Club, and the Tingley UMW. She was a regular at the Tingley Meal Site where she loved playing bingo and washing dishes. Marjorie outfitted many, many a friend with hand-crocheted slippers, hats, scarves, shawls, and afghans. When Marjorie was not crocheting, she was either reading or writing poetry and stories. She never lost interest in current events or in sharing her opinion. Those left to cherish her memory are her children Jeannette Buell of Plattsmouth, NE, Patricia (Rodger) Loudon of Minneapolis, MN, Carolyn Werner Sheldon of Mesquite, NV, and Jim (Ann) Werner of Diagonal, IA; nine grandchildren, twenty (one pending) great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren, a sister Pauline Murphy of Mount Ayr, several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Elton, sons-in-law Gary Buell and James Sheldon, and her sister Opal Webb. Over the course of their 51 years of marriage, Elton and Marjorie had a positive impact on many youth, at times welcoming them into their home and raising them as their own. Marjorie had a strong faith. She touched the lives of many people of all ages throughout her lifetime. |
