Obituary: Mary Ann Whitham passed away peacefully on 6, surrounded by her family. Mary Ann lived in Idaho Falls for over 50 years. She moved here with her husband, Kirby, in the spring of 1951 when he was assigned to work on the first Experimental Breeder Reactor (EBR 1). She and Kirby bought a house a few years later and settled in to raise their family of three children. lived in the same house until they moved into the Morning Star retirement community. Mary Ann was born and raised in Montana. She grew up in a world that no longer exists. She remembered running after the ice wagon as a child. The wagon drove through the neighborhood once a week delivering ice for residential ice boxes, and the driver would give the ice chips to waiting children. While living in a small town in South Dakota, she and her siblings strapped roller skates to their shoes and skated on the boardwalks in the town. moved back to Bozeman a few years later when her father got a job running a creamery. She helped out by cutting butter and wrapping it in paper, then she and her brother delivered it around town. Born in Bozeman, Montana in 1921 to Otto and Leah (Hartman) Batch, Mary Ann was the oldest of 4 children: Katherine (Sprague), John Martin Batch and Rachel (Wheeler). moving several times during her early years, the family settled back in Bozeman where Mary Ann attended junior high, high school and college. She pledged the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority and graduated from Montana State with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics in 1943. She married Kirby Whitham whom she had known since junior high. both graduated from Montana State in 1943 and were married in 1944. The newlyweds moved to Oak Ridge, Tennessee during the war, then to Chicago where Kirby went to work for Argonne National Laboratory. moved to Idaho Falls in 1951 so Kirby could work on EBR 1. Her life was devoted to caring for her family and raising her 3 children, Joan, Jim and Mark. She was of the generation of women who mastered the many homemaking skills of cooking from scratch, sewing, needle crafts, gardening and putting up the harvest. Her long life is a testimony to the health and wellbeing that she nurtured for her family and her value of an active lifestyle. She loved being outdoors and with family as much as possible. Family outings included picnicking, camping or skiing almost every weekend. The family enjoyed visiting the Oregon coast, collecting shells while walking on the beach, or watching the waves of a winter storm. There were trips to the Tetons, Glacier National Park, the Grand Canyon and countless other hiking trips throughout Idaho and the West. Mary Ann was a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church, serving on the altar guild for many years, and a member of the League of Women Voters, and P.E.O. Mary Ann was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Kirby. She is survived by her sister, Rachel Wheeler; her children Joan (Don) Veach, Jim (Vickie) Whitham, Mark (Donna) Whitham; her grandchildren, Luke Veach, Christy (Justin) Kangas, Chris (Leah) Whitham, Patrick Whitham; and her great grandchildren, Abby, Josiah, Camden and David. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. , 11 at St. Lukes Episcopal Church, 270 N. Placer Ave. in Idaho Falls, with the Rev. Susan Elizabeth Speir officiating. A reception will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a contribution to St. Lukes Episcopal Church or, Montana State University, Shakespeare in the Parks, PO Box 174120, MSU-Bozeman Bozeman, MT 59717-4120, http://shakespeareintheparks.org/support.php |

Obituary: Twin Falls, Idaho: Wayne Rolland Whitehead, 86, of Twin Falls passed away , May 12, 2015 after a short stay at Rosetta Assisted Living in Twin Falls. Wayne was born in Gooding, Idaho on May 24, 1928 to Lance Rolland and Nethella Whitehead. When Wayne was in high school, he was on the basketball and baseball teams and also played the saxophone and clarinet in the band. He graduated from Twin Falls High School in 1947. On May 28, 1949, Wayne married Jeannine Sears and they almost attained 66 years of marriage. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls Temple. Wayne proudly served his country in the US Navy as an airplane mechanic during the Korean War. he was honorably discharged he brought his wife and daughter to Twin Falls. He then became employed at Mountain Bell Telephone , starting out in construction. He retired as a telephone repairman after 33 years of employment. Wayne purchased land in the Stanley Basin where his family built their log cabin. The land was in a primitive area at the time and so the cabin was built without any power. Wayne was a finish carpenter, a plumber and an electrician. He built his own home and helped his two sons in law build their homes. Wayne, Jeannine and their three daughters loved the Stanley Basin where they spent the summers hiking, water skiing and fishing at Alturas Lake, and attending services at the chapel in Stanley. Many hours were spent sitting around campfires, roasting marshmallows, singing songs, and telling wild fishing and hunting stories with his parents, brother and family. Wayne was a very patriotic man and he installed a flag pole on the deck of the cabin where he always flew the American Flag. retiring from the telephone company, he and Jeannine did a lot of historic traveling. However, he said that the trip to Stanley, seeing the forests and the majestic Sawtooth Mountains was the most beautiful trip of all. Wayne is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and held various positions. He is survived by his wife, Jeannine; daughters Diane Stewart of Meridian, Idaho, Kathy (Dennis) Frederickson of Lawrence, Kansas, and Cherie Whitehead of Twin Falls; his brother Dick (Terry) Whitehead; 7 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, step father Golden Barlow, 2 grandsons, Karl Stewart and Justin Frederickson; and nephew Gary Whitehead. Waynes family would like to thank Tom Barrett and Bob Isabelle for their friendship and many acts of kindness. A special thank you to Visions Hospice. services for Wayne will be held at 3:00 PM on , May 16, 2015 at the 3rd Ward LDS Church, 2680 Elizabeth Blvd, Twin Falls with Bishop Richard Crowley conducting. The burial will follow at Twin Falls with military honors provided by the Magic Valley Honor Guard and the US Navy Honor Guard. A viewing for family and friends will take place on from 1:30 PM until 2:45 PM at the LDS Church.
