The Long Goodbye

Eulogy

Irene Renee Hart
Wollmers

Born 7 Nov 1921 - died 10 Sept 2009

We are the sum of our memories. Everything we know, everything we
perceive, every movement we make is shaped by them.

- The Forgetting - Alzheimers: Portrait of an Epidemic, by David Shenk
My mother was one of the most wonderful people
I have ever known and will probably ever know.

She spent her life caring for her children;
She never put herself before others.
She would often go out of her way to help her friends.
I always knew I could come to her no matter what the reason or circumstance.
Her love was always unconditional

I loved her with all my heart and will truly miss her.
As I grew up with Mom and I now reflect - I cannot recall a single time she raise her voice in anger at me - Even when I had done something terrible. I always knew if she was not happy or upset but, angry she was not.
She never laid a hand on me - of course she probably regretted that a few times!
According to me, she was the best Mom in the world. And in her last year during this Long Goodbye I always told her that. This journey has truly been one of the most difficult in my life.
Before I reflect on that, I just want to say a few words about who my Mother was, many of you here today probably know that my Mom / Renee - there is a little bit of mystery. Not because she was elusive or aloft but because she was Russian and born in Shanghia, China.
So friends and family often wondered about this dark haired and dark eyed Russian lady with a wonderful smile, loving disposition and a kindness that was contagious and unforgettable.
She was born to Boris and Gale Rybaltovsky (many of you knew Gale) her parents came to China as the result of the Russian Bolshevik Revolution. Mom grew up in Shanghai,China went to Catholic schools there and in France; she spoke fluent French, Russian and English all her life.
Which sometimes cause a few problems in the Alzheimer unit at Brookside Glen when she would start speaking Russian and the caregivers hadn clue of what she was speaking, so JoAnn and I often had to reassure them that she was not speaking in tongues? But only expressing herself in her native language.
She lived her life as a loving Mother who incessantly worried about us. She so ingrained in us that family matters, that for me, in spite of being in the service and often gone, my family and I always somehow managed to get back home for as many Christmas, holidays and birthdays as we could. Only wars or other calamities that sometimes prevent us from getting together. But my sister and brother and their families would be there.
My sister JoAnn had remained here in Columbus for the most part and dedicated herself to looking after Mom and worked so hard to help her cope with aging and her eventual diagnosis of Alzheimer.
Throughout her life she loved her friends and steadfastly remained loyal to them. She worked hard to help my father establish and grow a business here. She enjoyed volunteer work with Red Cross and other agencies; and she had a passion for bridge and spent lots of time at the Columbus Bridge club until she was unable continued...

▰ Jerry Wolk

Jerry Wolk, born February 12, 1935 passed from this life on December 31, 2014 in Atlanta, Georgia. Jerry was 79. Tags: #Nina #Jeff #Jerry #York #Atlanta #Penny #Polysius #American #Group #Insurance #Vice #Mitzvah #Jeffs #Maurey #Steven #Jerrys #Temple #Emeth #Marietta #Arlington #Park #Sandy #Association #Smile #Southern
Obituary: A beloved husband, brother, father, and grandfather, Jerry Wolk of Dunwoody passed away on 31, 2014. He was born in New York City on 12, 1935 to parents Tillie and Aaron, and is survived by his wife Penny Hamond-Wolk; two older brothers Irwin (and his wife Anita) and Stanley; sons Maurey and Steven; stepchildren Nina Hafitz and Jeff Hamond; and grandchildren Madison and Rylee Hafitz and Sivana and Ilan Hamond. Jerry was very much loved by his family and thought of by all as being a "gentle giant," easy and gracious in manner and always ready to listen, offer a calming word, or pull a coin out of your ear. He was giving to others to such an extent that he was embarrassed to ever need care or attention from others. Penny says that he was the kindest, most loving man she has ever met. In total, they were together for 45 years and married for 18 of them. People who don't know them may wonder why this is. The actual truth is that they were engaged for 25 years, and the supposed 25th engagement anniversary party was in actuality a surprise wedding that caught all of their friends and family (except the children) totally off-guard. One of Nina and Jeff's favorite childhood memories is that Jerry loved to tinker with things and fix them, taking them apart and putting them back together. He used to love fixing broken toasters and transistor radios and toys. His dream was actually to run a small repair shop, where people would bring him their broken small appliances and electronics and he would repair them. He also loved collecting stamps and probably secretly hoped to be a world-reknowned philatelist. Instead, Jerry build a career in insurance and risk management. He was an insurance salesman from New York who came to Atlanta in the late 1970s to follow in Penny's footsteps. He worked for companies such as Polysius, American International Group, and ACE Insurance Group, where he rose to the level of Vice President. For his stepchildren Nina and Jeff, Jerry has been in their lives since 1970 -- when Nina was 9 and Jeff was 3 -- and each stepchild thinks of him just as they would a blood relative. Jerry was at every important family function, graduation, wedding, Bar Mitzvah, etc., and both Nina and Jeff considered him a third parent of equal standing. He was loved just as a father would be loved. While Jerry was very much a part of Nina and Jeffs lives, he built a strong extended family as Maurey and Steven were growing up. Many happy long weekends were spent in upstate New York, and all of his children and stepchildren have fond memories of vacations together as one family. As Jerrys family grew and as his children and stepchildren built families of their own, Jerry made every new family member feel special and loved. He will be missed by all. Penny and Jerry were very early congregants of Temple Kol Emeth in Marietta. A memorial service was held at Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs on 4, 2015. Donations in Jerry's memory may be made to the American Heart Association, the Smile Train, or Southern Poverty Law . Jerry and his family have been longtime supporters of these charities.
