Obituary: Alice Gray Winslow, 100, passed away peacefully and in the presence of family at her residence in the Winter Park Towers on , 11, 2014. She was born on Christmas Day, 1914, in Havana, Cuba to Robert Adam Gray and Sue Burnet Gray. In addition to her parents, she was pre-deceased by her beloved husband of 64 years, William Henry Winslow and by her brother Robert Adam Gray, Jr. She is survived by her two sons, William Robert Winslow and his wife Susan Lewis Winslow of Mount Pleasant, SC and Richard Clarke Winslow, of Sewanee, TN; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Burnet Winslow, of Tallahassee, FL; two grandsons, Justin Wright Winslow and his wife Christine Winslow of John’s Island, SC and Robert Ashton Winslow of Signal Mountain, TN; and great-grandsons Robert Francis McAuliffe, Tallahassee, FL and Ethan and Aidan Butler of Johns Island, SC. Our Mother, Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother began life on a citrus plantation just outside of Havana where she lived for the first twelve years of her life, returning to the U.S. with her family to Memphis and then to Winter Park, where she lived with her grandmother and attended Winter Park High School. Following graduation, she and her grandmother spent two years in Europe, living in Paris and traveling extensively. While there she graduated from a stenography school (and, much later, worked as a stenographer for the Dean of Women at Rollins). Returning from France to Winter Park, she and our father were re-acquainted and married in 1936, and much of the next 25 or so years were spent rearing and nurturing two sons. She had always enjoyed the arts and, in her eighties, took up painting and became quite good at it. When a stroke last year hindered her reading she obtained a Nook, and it was always with her; she had at least three books she was actively reading on it at any given time. She was a caring person who always seemed to be more concerned about others than herself; she had a wonderful and sharp sense of humor and insight which she kept until her passing and used in a way that was never incompatible with her underlying kindness toward everyone. She especially loved animals, had three very fortunate dogs as pets, at least a dozen cats (not all at once, of course), and supported just about anything that would improve animal welfare. Finally, having been close to a grandmother who was born before the Civil War, she was a remarkable link to the past and a rich source of family stories and history. We dearly miss her! A brief graveside service will be held at 11am 24 at Palm in Winter Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando. |
