Obituary: In 1943, the White family, led by parents Orion and Genevieve moved from Ohio to Ft. Myers, Florida. Sisters Carol and Lois both studied music and watched over their younger brother Roger. The family was active in church and Roger accepted Christ as his personal Saviour and Lord in 1949. In the years that followed, Roger worked with his dad manufacturing lawn mowers and played trumpet in the high school band. He met his future bride-to-be at a church youth rally both attended with their friends. Following high school, Roger, who was a 13th generation Mayflower descendent, proudly served overseas in the US Army Signal Corp during the late fifties until honorably discharged. Marriage to sweetheart Barbara followed, and the new couple soon found their own church home & family at Missouri Avenue Baptist Church in Clearwater, FL. Over the years, Roger served in many capacities at the church, including: congregation song leader, choir director, deacon, trustee, and clerk. Never afraid to get his hands dirty, he oversaw the maintenance of the church buses, was responsible for the church audio and data communication systems, and sang in a mixed quartet. He also directed and participated in several facility renovations for the sanctuary (following a brush with a tornado), educational building, and construction of the audio visual control center. The sixties saw the births of Maria, David, and Edward; Roger’s future daughter-in-law and sons. Roger completed his college studies during the seventies at the University of South Florida; earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering. He was selected as a member of the engineering fraternity Tau Beta Pi. His education served him well during his career at Honeywell, where he worked on guidance systems affiliated with the Mercury space program. He retired from General Electric/Lockheed Martin after 31 years in various positions of increasing responsibility and growth while working on polymer chemistry and thermal battery development projects. During this time, son Edward married daughter-in-law Maria, adding grandchildren Garrett and Kelsey to the family in the early nineties. Roger passed away on 29, 2014 rejoining his parents, sisters, and nephew Terry. He is survived by his wife, sons, daughter-in-law, grandchildren, sisters-in-law (Mary & Dianne), nephews (Kevin, Daniel, & Tim), nieces (Marla, Twila, Debbie, Diana, Christy, & Kelly), and their families as well as his church family. The family gratefully appreciates the love, food, prayers, cards, letters, visits and well wishes shown to us as we adjust now and in the days to come until Christ returns. |
