Obituary: Eulogy for Mom Thanks folks for joining us to honor our mother and help us celebrate her life. Many of you knew her all your life. In fact your grandparents may have known her all their lives. Mom was only four months shy of celebrating her 99th birthday. We had hoped that she would make it at least till then, if not her 100th birthday. However, she didn quite make it, though as sister Sharon says, she reached her 100,000 mile warranty period, if not more. This is probably literally true because those who have lived in Avondale for any length of time, will remember that she walked everywhere she needed to go. Seldom would she accept a neighbors offer of a ride-even to church. Mom was born on 31, 1912. She used to joke that she was a witch having been born on Holloween. She was born in El Rito de las Gallinas, which someone translated into English as Turkey Creek, and later to Gardner, Colorado, which is near Walsenburg. Im trying to figure out why they translated Gallinas, which means chickens in Spanish, into turkey. Shouldn it have been Chickens Creek? Or at least Rito de los Guajalotes? Somehow, someone fowled up in translation. But then I quibble and digress. Moms mother, grandma Ramona Cisneros, was also born in Turkey Creek in , 1872, where she apparently met and married grandpa, Trinidad Gallegos in 1888. He had been born in Taos, New Mexico in 1863. To them were born 14 children-all of them apparently born in Turkey Creek, of which mom was next to the youngest. Uncle Lee was the youngest. At age 17 she married our dad, age 21, whom some of the older folks knew as Espiridion Antonio, but most everyone just called him Tony. had nine children of whom I am the oldest and sister Sharon is the youngest. In between many of you may remember, came Nettie, Shirley, Josephine, Arlene, Clarence, Franklin, and Randy. Of the nine of us, four are deceased. Shirley, Josephine, Arlene (who died at 15) and Franklin, who died just a couple of years ago in Oklahoma. His wife, Jean is accompanying us today. Our dad died when he was 39 leaving mom a widow at 35. With nine children to support and raise, I the oldest at 17 and Sharon a baby of one month, mom had her hands more than full. In days when life insurance was almost an unheard of luxury, she also had to earn a living to support us. There was a $5000 insurance that she received. With it she had the house built in which she raised us and lived until she had to go to the nursing home. Many of you probably remember mom as that sweet little lady, somewhat soft-spoken and shy. My brothers and sisters are here to reveal a secret. Mom was a tough lady. She had to be. It was made tougher by her refusal to accept assistance from anyone, including us kids when we went out to make our living. In your lives you will meet few like her. With 10 mouths to support she worked two and sometimes three jobs at a time. I remember her getting up very early in the morning and going to clean house for the priests and cook their meals for the day, then rush to make the one Trailways bus that passed through on the way to Pueblo. There she rushed to the Ramada Inn or some other hotel, where she cleaned rooms and made beds until time to rush to the bus depot on the one daily bus that came toward Avondale and home where she still had more work awaiting her. She also worked in restaurants, washing dishes or any of the other kitchen jobs. No job was too menial for her. Despite this, we never suffered neglect or deprivation. As I said, she was a tough lady. She didn suffer fools lightly, especially us kids. She knew what she expected of us and accepted no less than the best from us-or else. I won go into the or else part. Just know that when she got to that point, we found ourselves running around doing her bidding knowing that we didn want to face her or else. Thus, at an early age we learned that there was work to be done, whether in the home or out in the fields. There was no girls work, or boys work. The boys did the dishes, vacuumed floors, learned how to iron and even sew. The girls worked outdoors and cleaned the yard in addition to the aforementioned chores done by the boys. One thing that we learned at an early age, education was very important to her, as it had been to dad. Therefore, at a time when many kids in the neighborhood looked forward to quitting school before graduating from high school, that was never an option for us. We never missed one day of school because of work to be done inside or outside of the home. Luckily, most of us in the family loved school, so that it was never a problem for us. As we left home one by one, she still thought that one day we would come back home to Avondale. To her there was no place like Avondale. Though she had been to places which she thought were beautiful such as Hawaii, California, Boston, Atlanta, Mexico, etc, nothing compared to Avondale. When she had to go into the nursing home, there was never a day that she didn want to be back in her home in Avondale. Unfortunately, her condition would not allow for that. Now that she is gone forever, we hope that she has found a place that will compare with her beloved Avondale. But we doubt it. May she rest in peace. We love you mom. |
