Obituary: Nellie Voortman, 91, of Visalia, California passed away on , 22, 2015 in Visalia, California. Nellie was born in Hancock, Minnesota on 3, 1923 to John Kooistra and Minnie Van Heuklom Kooistra, the youngest of 12 children born to this union. She was raised and educated in Iowa. Nellie married Richard Voortman in Sioux , Iowa in 1944 during World War II and they celebrated 62 years of marriage. The couple moved to California in 1965, settling in Chino for a time and then moved to Washington. In 1999, they returned to Visalia to make their home. Nellie was a founding member of Trinity United Reformed Church where she was active with the Ladies Aide. She especially enjoyed times spent with her children and grandchildren. Her hobbies included gardening, crochet, cooking and baking (her lemon bars were the best). Nellie was a very straight forward lady and enjoyed laughter. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Minnie; eleven siblings and her husband, Richard in 2007. Nellie leaves to cherish her memory, three children - Allen Voortman and wife Cheri of Granger, WA, Marcia Van Land and husband, Thomas of Chino, CA and Helen Byl and husband, Thomas of Exeter, CA; nine grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren. Graveside services will be held on , 28, 2015 at 10 a.m. at Visalia District . Memorial services will follow at 11 a.m. at Trinity United Reformed Church of Visalia. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to the Veterans Administration. Tributes and condolences may be made at www.mllerchapel.com. entrusted to Miller Memorial Chapel, 1120 W.
