Obituary: Eugene Emile Vilfordi was born in Dallas, Texas on 5, 1927 to parents George L. Vilfordi, Sr. and Helen Schell Vilfordi. He entered into eternal life with Jesus Christ on 21, 2016. Gene was raised in Dallas where he attended Bradfield Elementary School, Highland Park Junior High School and Highland Park High School. He joined the Cub Scouts in 1936 while in Elementary School and continued to meet with his den regularly for the next eighty years. When Gene was eight years old, his father, who served as Assistant Catering Manager at the Adolphus Hotel, introduced him to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Genes father died just four months later, on his sons ninth birthday. Gene spent many weekends with his maternal grandparents in Dallas, and occasional summers with relatives on a family farm in Bryan, Texas, where he developed a love for gardening. Motivated by his mother, who emphasized the dignity gained from working, Gene developed strong work habits at an early age. He worked a variety of jobs, including delivering newspapers, selling Fuller Brushes, operating the elevator at Fakes Furniture Store, pumping gasoline at a neighborhood Texaco station, and working as a bellhop in an Evergreen, Colorado hotel during many summers. Gene graduated from Highland Park High School in 1945 and went on to the University of Texas at Austin. He became a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity and was a fraternity brother of Tom Landry. He later transferred to Southern Methodist University, but left after his junior year to help meet his familys financial needs. Gene went to work in the Parade of Progress Program at the General Motors Corporation, traveling throughout the U.S. demonstrating and promoting GMs latest technologies, and becoming an excellent writer and public speaker in the process. He left General Motors in 1953 to take a position as a broker for Merrill Lynch where he would work for more than five decades. Even as his career as a financial advisor flourished, Gene never lost his passion for learning, returning to SMU to complete a BBA in Marketing in 1976. He worked at Merrill Lynch for 51 years, becoming one of the longest tenured employees in Merrill Lynch history, retiring in 2004 as First Vice President--Investments, Senior Financial Advisor. During his employment at Merrill Lynch, Gene served on the Pension Administration Committee, the Pension Fund Investment Committee, and the Advisory Council to Management. He was instrumental in establishing the Win Smith Foundation at Merrill Lynch, a charitable fund that assists local Merrill Lynch employees in times of unexpected need. Gene met his first wife, Ruth Anne Fleming, while he was training with Merrill Lynch in New York City and she was performing in Broadway musicals. Gene and Ruth Anne were married on May 7, 1955 in Pasadena, California and settled in Dallas, Texas, where they had three children, Teresa, Marc and Anne. His marriage to Ruth Anne was cut short when she lost her battle with cancer in 1983. Gene met his second wife, Shirley Smith Vilfordi in Dallas at St. Rita Catholic Community Church. He and Shirley were married on 28, 1984. Gene was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, friend, mentor, servant leader and philanthropist. He cherished his family and loved spending time with them. He particularly loved to travel with his family and generously treated them to many memorable vacations. Genes hobbies included gardening, tennis, golf, hunting, reading, poetry, travel and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Struggling to make ends meet during the Great Depression, Genes close-knit Italian immigrant family impressed upon him the importance of community, faith, education, and helping the disadvantaged. Genes faith in Christ was of paramount importance to him and reflected the guiding principle of his life. He expressed his faith through his active involvement in the St. Rita Catholic Community Church and the Christian Community of Gods Delight. While at St. Rita, Gene was a Eucharist Minister, served as President of the Advisory Council, and participated in Good Samaritan Visitations and the Feed the less Ministry. His strong Catholic faith led him to provide financial expertise and guidance to many Catholic organizations including the Catholic Diocese of Dallas, the Jesuit Provincial of New Orleans, the Catholic Foundation of Dallas, and the Serra Club of Dallas. Gene was a board member of the Catholic Society of Religious and Literary Education, served as a Board Member of the Diocese of Dallas Finance Council, and assisted the Diocese with the capital campaign to refurbish the Cathedral and the bell tower. Gene played a significant role in the early developmental years of the Catholic Foundation. He was on the Foundation Board of Trustees for 19 years and served on the Investment Committee and the Distribution Committee. Gene was an active member of the Sierra Club of Dallas for 44 years, serving as President and District Governor of Serra District 46 during this time. Because of his strong belief that education is critical to an individuals advancement and improvement, Gene spent many hours serving on the governing boards of Christian educational institutions. He felt Catholic education provides a moral and ethical armament for a young person to stand firm against excesses and greed. Gene was a member of the University of Dallas Board of Trustees for 20 years, served as Chairman of the UD Endowment Committee, and was a member of the UD Executive Committee. At Ursuline Academy of Dallas, Gene was on the Board of Trustees for six years, serving as Board Chair during his final year. He was a member of the Finance Committee, served on the Boards Investment Committee, and participated in many of the schools capital campaigns. In addition, Gene served on the Ursuline Foundation Board and chaired the Foundation Investment Committee. Gene served for 6 years on Cistercian Preparatory Schools Board of Trustees and advised the school on investment matters for many years. Additionally, Gene Co-Chaired the Bishops Inner continued... |
