Obituary: Harold Vexler 1914-2015 Born on 28,1914, Harold Vexler passed away in the presence of loved ones. He was affectionately known as Mr. Harold on the Westside where he worked from the age of twelve. He was the son of Abraham Vexler and Rose Rosner, both immigrants from Eastern Europe. He was about as old San Antonio as one could find. He walked to Stephen F. Austin Elementary everyday with Henry B. and Luz Gonzales. Keen until the end, he remembered the time when we had a town crier. He knew the story of every street and every old building. He served his country in the U.S. Army as a Sergeant during WWII. Despite many challenges, he successfully operated Monterrey Iron and Metal, founded by his father in 1916, since his fathers death in 1944. It was a family business and family included his employees and co-workers. He took great pride in watching the next two generations continue his legacy. Another source of pride for Harold was that not one person in his company has ever been laid off for lack of work. He worked steadily until just a few weeks ago. A quiet man who did not curse, drink, or gamble, he had a dry sense of humor which brought smiles to many faces. He spoke fluent Spanish and traveled extensively with Esther in Mexico. A lover of nature, he saw Gods face in all mankind. Harold was married for 73 years to Esther Scharlack, a childhood friend. Theirs was a rich marriage, full of romance. Together they gave support to many diverse local interests and charities. were longtime and faithful members of Temple Beth-El and Congregation Agudas Achim. Harold was preceded in death by his brothers Sheldon and Marvin and his sisters Lyda Lande and Frances Karotkin. He is survived by Esther, son Jack and wife Bette, son Dr. Stuart Vexler and wife, Dr. Cari Kahn, and daughter Dr. Jill Vexler. Also survived by grandsons Jeff Vexler and wife Catharine, David Vexler, and grandaughters Jordan Vexler and Ruthie Vexler and husband Stuart Zicherman, and Tibarek Vexler. Great grandchildren Rosie and Henry B. Zicherman. Godchildren Bobbie Malone and Ronnie Scharlack. Many nieces and nephews who revered Uncle Harold. The family is deeply indebted to the caretakers who made Harolds last few years so enjoyable. Myrtle Lewis, Juana Herrera, Olivia Santos, and Michelle White as well as Ana Maria and Paco Aguirre. Drs. Thornton, Moran, Font, and Hamner helped our father reach his full years. We also want to thank Monterrey office staff including Steve Goldberg, Richard Bibb, Alan Jones, and Maryann Rodriguez, as well as compadres Richard Murphy, Myron Winstead, Bill Hargis, and Rolando de Luna for their dedication over the years, as well as the many dedicated employees.
