Obituary: From a boyhood spent during the depths of the Great Depression, Howard Lee Vestal lived an exemplary life for more than 93-years until his death on 19, in Katy, Texas. Born in the western Tennessee town of Henderson in 1919, Howard was the late arriving youngest of four children, and grew up along with his orphaned cousin Sue, largely in the care of his elder sister, Opal. The family moved to nearby Jackson, Tennessee, when Howards father, forced by economic conditions to close his small town store, had to look for work to support the family. Howard subsequently was a good student in Jackson schools, attended the Methodist church, and regularly worked after classes to buy his own clothes and help with household expenses. He also excelled at sports, especially baseball and football: at 6-feet and 155-lbs, he anchored the Jackson High offensive line at center, and played defense as well on championship teams of that era.

With war looming in Europe in the late 30s and motivated by a deeply felt sense of patriotism and a sincere commitment to the American Dream, Howard joined the Tennessee National Guard while still in high school. While his athletic skills won him a football scholarship at Union University in Jackson, the Union connection became the turning point of his life because thats where he first met his wife of almost 71-years, Claire Tootsie Cooper. With the advent of Pearl Harbor, Howard left Union and was accepted as an Aviation Cadet at Randolph Field, then known as The West Point of the Air, in San Antonio. He and Claire were married upon his commissioning, and he was sent overseas to fly P-38 Lightning photo reconnaissance missions in North Africa and Europe. He was a decorated combat pilot having won the Air Medal with multiple oak leaf clusters during his 50-mission tour. He later accepted a regular USAF commission and served on active duty for 24-years, retiring with the rank of colonel while serving as base commander at Randolph AFB, the place where his career had started. Along the way he earned a masters degree in management at The University of Pittsburgh and was a graduate of the National Defense at Ft. McNair, in Washington, D.C. Howard also was a deacon in the Baptist Church having adopted the denomination with his marriage to Claire, and his loving embrace by her large family of Coopers in Texas and Tennessee.

Texas A&Ms president, General Earl Rudder, hired Howard in 1964 and Howard served at the University until his 1983 retirement, having attained the office of Vice President for Business Affairs. A lifelong golfer, Howard and Claire enjoyed playing frequently with friends at Briarcrest C.C. and around the world.

A devoted Christian, a loving husband and father, in addition to his wife, Howard is survived by daughters Molly Little of Boerne, TX, and Laura McGregor and husband Jim, of Sugar Land, son Howard Jr. and wife Marsha of Dallas, eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A private service will be held to commemorate his life.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Howard and Claire Vestal Scholarship, Union University, 1050 Union University Dr., Jackson TN, 38305.
