Obituary: Jennie (Joanna) Vlanton, 93, a native of St. Louis who retired to Kent, Ohio, died on 8. She was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on 27, 1924, to Stephanos and Evangelia Constantinides. For 30 years, she was a classroom teacher and reading specialist with the St. Louis public schools. She held a B.A. in History from Washington University in St. Louis and a Masters in Education from the University of Missouri. Jennie was a member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Akron, where she is a past President of the ELPIS Society. Jennie had a lifelong interest in the history of Greek Americans and in her own familys journey from Asia Minor to the US. When she was 80 years old, Jennie published 761 Aubert Avenue: My Greek American Sanctuary, a memoir of her childhood in north St. Louis. Jennie was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Elias Vlanton, sister Olympia Glynias and brother John Constantinides. She is survived by her brother Platon Constantinides, daughter and son-in-law Evangeline and Rick M. Newton; son and daughter-in-law Elias P. and Jane (Silver) Vlanton; grandchildren, Joanna Newton, Olympia Carranza, Elias Newton; Ari Vlanton, Yackelin Rodriguez, Renee Vlanton, Brianna Vlanton, and great-grandson Rick Carranza. Jennie was a loving wife, a dedicated teacher and a caring friend, but above all else, she was a devoted mother and grandmother. Services will be held 11 a.m. , 11th at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Akron, with Rev. Fr. Andrew Lentz officiating. Friends may call at the Annunciation Church one hour before the service. Interment will be on at 10:30 a.m. St. Matthews , 4360 Bates Street, St. Louis, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church Building Fund, 129 S. Union St., Akron 44304 or to Doctors Without Borders, 333 7th Avenue, 2nd Floor, NY, NY 10001-5004. |

Obituary: VLAHOS, Vasiliki, age 76, departed to be with the Lord on , 15, 2015. Born in Athens, Greece to Leonidas and Stella Kanelli, she is preceded in death by both her parents, her husband of 52 years, Stratos G. Vlahos, and her sister Boula of Athens, Greece. Vasiliki came to the United States with her husband and two sons in 1966, and became an American Citizen in 1974. She gave birth to her daughter Stella here in Dayton, Ohio in 1971. She was an accomplished tailor, a profession she perfected for more than 30 years. She worked for traditional clothiers in Dayton, including former mens stores, War Wars and D.H. Peer, and the Elder Beerman Stores. She also ran her own business, Bettes Sewing Shop, in downtown Dayton, for nearly 15 years. Vasiliki will always be remembered for her warmth and kindness, both to her family, friends, and customers. She especially adored her children and grandchildren, and loved spending time with them at their homes. Cooking Greek food was a specialty of hers, and she kept all her secrets stored in the familys famous selemente. This book is a treasure filled with Moms great recipes to be enjoyed and passed on for generations to come. Her greatest accomplishment by far was her children. meant everything to her. And, she was the devoted, loving wife of Stratos, giving her all to ensure that her family had a good life. Vasiliki is survived by her children, Pete Vlahos (Stephanie Buirley), George Vlahos (Suzanne), and Stella Franchina (Joseph); and her grandchildren, Alexia, Vasiliki, Helen, Matthew, and Emily. She will be deeply missed, but never forgotten in our hearts. Viewing will be held at Routsong , 2100 E. Stroop Rd., Kettering from 4PM to 7PM , 19, with Trisagion Services starting at 5PM. Service at the Greek Orthodox Church at 9:30AM , 20 immediately followed by burial at Woodland . |
