Obituary: Harriet Funk Vanstory died , 4, 2017 at home. Following a private burial, a memorial service will be held , 9, 2017 at 11 oclock am in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church, 617 North Elm Street, Greensboro, NC, where she was a member. Mrs. Vanstory was born in Delaware on 22, 1946. She was the daughter of Harry Lawrence Funk and Ruth Carver Funk. She attended Salem and the University of North Carolina where she received a Masters in French. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Vanstory was pre-deceased by her sister Margaret (Peggy) Funk Moser and brother-in-law Dr. Galen Cartner Moser. She is survived by her husband, Peter Vaughn Vanstory; his three children, Peter Vanstory Jr.; Leigh Vanstory Poe and husband Thomas Lee Poe and daughter Caroline McCray Poe; Pennington Vanstory and his wife Kelly Stender Vanstory; her three nieces, Linda Page Moser, Margaret (Meg) Moser Michael and her husband Jeffrey Shannon Michael and their two children, Alexander Gray Michael and William Christopher Michael; Emily Moser Semans, her husband William (Bill) Merrick Semans, and her children, Helen Carver Semans, Emily Merrick Semans, and William McEvoy Semans. A devoted wife and aunt, Mrs. Vanstorys first priority and most important job in life was supporting, caring for, and providing a home for her husband and extended family. Her devotion to her family began as a young girl when she looked up to her older sister with whom she shared a close and very special relationship. She was caring and supportive of her parents in their elder years, and very devoted to her husband of 44 years. She found joy in her great-nieces, nephews and granddaughter and loved spending time with and caring for them. Whenever possible she was present at their activities. She rarely missed a basketball game, a concert, a school event, a ballet performance or a horse show. She taught French, Spanish, and English for 27 years in the Burlington City and Guilford school systems. Her life lessons in teaching touched many students and she was able to keep in contact with many of them through the years. Mrs. Vanstory was a kind, generous, and compassionate individual. Ever the organizer and consummate hostess, she served many leadership roles in her community and was very devout in her religious beliefs. Obituary: Dee Holmes York Vanstory, 88, of Olin died , 11, 2015, at her residence. The community lost one of its greatest historians, artists, and friends. Many people were recipients of Dees kindness and afghans as they touched her life and made a difference to her. She was fiercely loyal and devoted to her loved ones, and especially proud of grandchildren and great-grandchildren and her relationship with Jesus Christ. She was born 22, 1927, in Olin and was the daughter of the late Nathaniel Green N.G. and Sue Fraley Holmes. In 1939, she was baptized and joined Tabor Presbyterian Church and joined Macedonia United Methodist Church in 1959 where she served as church pianist for many years. She retired as a licensed practical nurse from Iredell Memorial Hospital following 23 years of service in order to care for her daughter, Rita. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, John Frank York, Sr., whom she married on 29, 1945, and Charles D. Vanstory, whom she married on 6, 1981; two daughters, Rita York Hix and Elizabeth Libby Delane York; three sisters, Frances H. Feimster, Lola H. Adams, and Robinette H. Feimster; and a brother, Clarence F. Holmes. She is survived by a son, John Frank York, Jr., of Olin; eight grandchildren, Melanie Hix Harrell (Scott), Hix, Lauren Hix Upton (Robbie), Jonathan Hix, Angela York, Wendy York Foxcroft (Brooke), Amanda York Mendoza (Omar) and John Frank York III; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Edith H. Holland of Olin; and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service celebrating Dees life will be held at 3:00 PM , 15, 2015, at Macedonia United Methodist Church in Harmony. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:30 PM at the church prior to the service.
