Obituary: Alfredo P. Vidal, AKA Fred, who ran and finished 3 Honolulu Marathons, completed 43 years of service with the Navy and Army including 2 tours aboard ship on the USS Constellation and USS Coral Sea, died on , 14, 2016. He joins his wife of 54 years, Zenaida, AKA Zeny, father Genaro, mother Pilar, sister Tessie and is survived by daughter Jo, son in law, Vince Pigao, grandkids Sydney and Kalani, in law Bella Pigao, sister Charito Paruta, nephews Mike and Marc Paruta, nieces Terrie and Gina Paruta, and caregiver, Minerva Sabino. Soon after surviving the Japanese occupation in the Philippines, his parents found a means to send the 13 year old and youngest Boy Scout Delegate in his troop to the 6th World Boy Scout Jamboree in Moisson, France in 1947. Ever the joker, he even managed to make the Pope laugh. Fred was dedicated to his family, a devout and active member of the Catholic Church and served as a Past Grand Knight with the Knights of Columbus joining in 1958. While in Hawaii, Fred was part of the Lions club and as the man who continues to give, he donated his eyes to the Lions Eye Bank through the University of Miami, who will use this gift for research and education. Fred led by example as a kind hearted, outgoing, ever smiling, lifelong friend, respected colleague who would share a joke or humorous story but could also communicate his ideas to improve a process or save money. The Army bestowed numerous awards acknowledging his efforts. When Fred was in school for Pre-Med, his father Genaro had a stroke, so he joined the Navy to help out his family. He would often make the 3 hour bus trip from the base to home just to say hello to his family. Fred and Zeny got married on 4th, 1959 and sailed to San Diego to start their new life. Six months after they moved into their home, he was deployed aboard ship to the USS Constellation. Subsequently, he took courses at night to complete his Bachelors Degree at Chaminade of Honolulu followed by his Masters Degree at the University of Central Michigan. During their 54 years of marriage, Fred and Zeny moved households 27 times, mostly with the Navy lining in San Diego, Bremerton Washington, Sasebo Japan, Alameda California, Pearl City and Aiea, Hawaii and retiring in Plantation, Florida where they would help watch the grandkids Sydney and Kalani and where Fred would also volunteer with the Plantation Police Department and serve as a lector at All Saints Church. Fred stood by his wife dealing with numerous health issues and provided much care and love until she passed in 2013. The family wishes to thank Doctors George Lim, Kenneth Tourgeman, Leon Cohn, John Largen, Richard Antosek, Alan Schwartz, Aaron Schwartz, David Morris, and the dedicated providers at West Side Regional Hospital and South and Covenant Village Rehabilitation, and Fresenius for his Dialysis treatment for the many years of care for Fred. Over the past five years, Minerva Sabino provided care to Zeny followed by Fred from making and bringing them to Doctors Appointments, organizing the medication for each of them, advocating for their health treatment in and out of the hospital and rehabilitation, bringing Fred to and from Dialysis and much, much more, for which the family is grateful for the love and hard work she provided. For the dad who taught his daughter, Jo to think 10 steps ahead and thoughtfully lead and inspire others, for the father in law who treated Vince as his own son and for the grandfather who provided the means and inspiration to guide Sydney and Kalani to find their passion, and for the man who was a loyal friend, If Fred were to be graded on his life and after death contributions, he would most likely receive an A for effort with the highest of honors. He is loved and will be missed but will remain in our hearts and our memories. |
