Obituary: Earl Frederick (Fred) VelDink, Jr., 69, died , 30, 2016 in Tallahassee, Florida. Fred was born on 30, 1947 in Gainesville, Florida, and graduated from P. K. Yonge Laboratory School in 1965. Fred attended the University of Florida and was a lifelong Gator Fan. He retired in 2007 from the Florida Department of Revenue after 35 years of service in the General Tax Administration Program. He was a lover of all things Disney and enjoyed many family trips to Disney World and Disney cruises. Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Dena VelDink and his sister Gayle VelDink. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Kim Duggar VelDink and their son Max VelDink of Tallahassee; his son Eric (Chrissie) VelDink of Gainesville; two grandchildren, Michael and Samantha; his sister Sandra Richardson (Lee) of Bristol, FL; a niece, Lynn (Tom) Smith and a great nephew Shane Smith of Tallahassee. A memorial service will be held , 6 at 2:00 PM at Immanuel Baptist Church in Tallahassee. The family will receive friends for visitation after the service. Obituary: Dr. Christiaan Dirk van der Velde, 91, died , 19, 2016 at his residence in Naples, Florida with his wife Patty by his side. Born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, on 11, 1924, he was the son of Christiaan and Alida van der Velde. Always a wonderful student, Chris graduated at the top of his high school class and was accepted to college. He was training to represent The Netherlands in the Olympics as a gymnast when World War II broke out. The war changed everything for most everyone in Europe, and the van der Veldes were no exception. Chris older brother, Cornelius, was taken away by the Germans to a work camp. Chris was only spared because he was 16, two years younger than the age other Dutch boys were shipped off. During the occupation, public education in Holland was suspended. In order to prevent young Chris from becoming idle, his father had his 16 year old son trained as an accountant. A year after Cornelius was taken from the family, Chris somehow figured out his brothers whereabouts. meticulous planning, Chris snuck into the camp, outsmarted the guards and kidnapped his brother back. four days and multiple train rides, Chris and his brother made their way back to Amsterdam, where their father immediately sent them into hiding. the war, Chris moved forward with his formal education. Always a brilliant student, he attended the University of Amsterdam for both his undergraduate degree and medical studies. Chris dream had always been to study the brain, cognition and mental mechanisms in some fashion or another. He completed his neurology residency in Paris, but before traveling back to Amsterdam to begin a neurosurgery rotation, he detoured south to ski in the Italian Alps. During this trip, Chris had a ski accident that caused severe damage to his right hand. This accident changed the entire trajectory of his life. Needing to take a year off from surgery to let his hand heal, Chris decided to apply to hospitals in the US (all in locations close to excellent ski slopes!) for a rotating residency. Providence Hospital in Portland, Oregon was the first to respond, so thats the one he accepted. In 1960, a spunky, native Oregonian named Patty Murphy was working as a medical assistant in the admitting area when a Dutch sailor who spoke no English was brought into the emergency room. Dr. van der Velde was called down to translate. Chris and Patty began an exchange which ended in Patty accepting a date to play tennis with the good doctor. This was the beginning of a 55 year relationship… Chris and Patty were married later that year and eventually made Norwich, Connecticut their home where they had five children. Dr. van der Velde became the Director of Education and Teaching at the Norwich State Hospital and was the Director of Research at the Abraham Ribicoff Research , where he researched many facets of mental illness. Dr. van der Velde was also a Professor at the University of Connecticut at Farmington and an Associate Professor at the Yale Medical School. He devoted his life to the study of schizophrenia and manic-depressive disorder, hoping to bring relief to these patients and their families. Dr. van der Velde was a pioneer in using lithium carbonate to treat manic-depressive illness. Not only was Dr. van der Velde accomplished in the medical field, he also played the piano like a concert pianist. An avid skier, boater and all-around sportsman, Chris loved sailing in the bay off of Stonington, CT. All of his children have vivid and fond memories of summers swimming off of Napatree Point and Watch Hill, RI. He insisted on taking his children to Europe every year as part of their education, and never lost his preference for skiing in the Alps. Zermatt, Switzerland was perhaps his favorite place on the planet. The one thing he could never figure out is why his wife was so wacko over glorified marbles (golf)! Once the family was grown, Chris and Patty continued their tradition of traveling to Europe every year and also began spending half the year in Naples. A talented linguist, Chris spoke Dutch, English, French and German fluently. Up until the onset of his illness, Dr. van der Velde remained a dedicated scholar and academician. He is the author of numerous medical articles as well as a book published in 2004 entitled the The Mind, Its Nature and Origin Chris is survived by his beloved wife, Patty, and their five children and spouses (Patrice and Mark Scott, Madison, OH; Chris and Erin van der Velde, Bend, OR; Murphy and Nan van der Velde, Wellesley, MA; Diederick and Amy van der Velde, Louisville, KY; and Anne-Marie van der Velde and Kendall Sharp, Fort Lauderdale, FL). The van der Veldes also have 16 wonderful grandchildren. Chris was predeceased by his brother Cornelius and sister Emmy. He has one living sibling, Elizabeth (who just celebrated her 90th birthday) in New Castle, England.
