Obituary: I want to take a moment to tell you about my father. It is a unique concept, a moment, a construct that has no discernable or measurable substance but when experienced, it is undeniably palpable and in the final analysis, it is the way in which we remember the magnitude of the human condition. Life is full of moments, and a life well-lived, with verve and power, has a few central themes, determined by the character and the intentions of its champion. The extraordinary life of my father, punctuated by these moments, always stayed with the principles of intention, honesty, and love. Having come to the US in his teens, my father fell in love with this country. Difficult though it must have been, to move to another place with a different language, a new culture, and foreign customs, in the tempest of adolescence and adulthood,my father had the intent to stay and make a life for himself. He loved Colombia as well, but this tells you a great deal about the size of his heart, to love two places, one the home of his memory, and the other the home of his intention. As an adult, and struggling with my own sojourn into this world into this world, my father told me the story of his intention: how he paid his pay through university being a stock boy and later a salesman at Sears, how he went back to Colombia after graduation for a job held for him and ultimately, how he told his father (a Colombian diplomat and Counsel to Aruba and later the US), “it is my intention to return to the US and make my life.” And he did. In our conversations, which became more frequent and deeper in content this past year, he explained how he got his first job. It was no small feat in those days, but he looked around and found the biggest international shipping company and promptly and intently applied for a position. He was denied at first, second, and third glance. simply were not hiring in the area in which he was applying. But my father’s intention was to make a life. Finally, his efforts paid off. Having been impressed with his persistence and no doubt his ineffable charm, the site director took a meeting with my father and he presented him with his opportunity, “go to Princeton, sit for these exams, and we’ll call you.” And, as he would do so many times during his life, my father showed his intention and proved his worth. He received an offer and promptly rose within the company. He became so successful that one of his clients (he had graduated from logistics and procurement to major account management) made him another offer, and again, he showed his intention and proved his worth. It was in this chapter that my father, a well-respected coffee trader on Wall Street took a business trip to Colombia and met the love of his life; my strong, vibrant and beautiful mother Lucy, to whom he would spend the rest of his life showing his intention… love, and proving his worth. This theme is called love. My father, above all, was a family man. He loved his wife, he loved my brother and myself and all the rest of his family, spread out across oceans, time zones, and countries. Never have I doubted the strength of his love. There are countless moments in his life that have been marked by his love and I am sure all of you here need only search for a second and you have your own precious example. Remember these moments, because I can tell you, in this past year, all of these moments strung together by love have helped me understand the identity and passion of the best man I will ever know. His charm and genuine affection for others and their stories filled every room he ever entered. I have many of these moments from which to remember my father, but I will share just one from my youth right now. Growing up, I started to play baseball at a young age. For some reason, I was told I was going to be a pitcher. As a boy, we would spend hours during the week, throwing the ball, and, as I progressed he would sit and catch for me. A man with sore knees, and a back that sometimes didn’t want to cooperate, crouched and caught my pitches. As I grew taller, and threw harder, he continued to support me, driving me hours to my games, and still, catching for me in our front yard. His catching hand would turn red, and I was not always on target, so the ball bounced off of his shins when I tried to impress him and throw harder than I should have. My father tried to catch my curve ball before I even knew how to throw it. Never complaining, and always giving me encouragement, his steadfast support never wavered, and those sporting memories of my youth remain with me as an example of his love. The last theme that I will share is perhaps the most obvious… it is to me at least. My father was an honest man of integrity. In the 28 short years that I knew him, I can honestly say that he never told me a lie and he never broke a promise. It was with his blessing that I had the courage to take on the world. When we spoke, I saw his strength in admitting fear in the face of the unknown and his courage in the effort to fight his final battle. In the end, he went in peace, surrounded by his family. He waited for each one continued... |
