Obituary: Harold Clifton Urschel, Jr. passed away on 12, 2012 at the age of 82. He was born in Toledo, Ohio, on 17, 1930 to Loma Elizabeth Powell Urschel and Harold Clifton Urschel, Sr. His was an interesting and unusual childhood, in large measure, the harbinger of his remarkable life. His father was an engineer, an inventor, and entrepreneur who founded the Urschel Engineering in Bowling Green, Ohio. During Hals early childhood, the family moved to rural Arkansas where his father developed a zinc and copper mining company. His mother homeschooled Hal and instilled in him a lifelong desire for learning, as well as for the morality and faith of her father, Hals grandfather, a Methodist Bishop. While in Arkansas, Hal nurtured his love for the outdoors, which continued throughout his life, exemplified by his passion for hunting and fishing. His mother recognized the need to civilize the nativist young boy, and so they returned to Bowling Green, Ohio, where he spent his high school years. His father died of heart disease at the age of 42, leaving Hals mother with three children to raise. the family moved back to Bowling Green, the academic environment provided by Bowling Green University had a significant influence on Hal. Bowling Green also happened to be where the Cleveland Browns professional football team began their football season. Under the indirect influence of Paul Brown, the legendary coach of the Cleveland team, Hal became an outstanding football player, becoming an all-state selection in football in Ohio. He was recruited by several major college teams, however, his mother thought Princeton University was the best fit for her son, who was also an outstanding academic student. Hal graduated from Princeton University, along with another Ohio football player, Dick Kazmaier, who was the last Heisman Trophy winner of an Ivy League school. Hals Princeton football career was successful, with an undefeated team his freshman and senior years (his Princeton football team was ranked #2 nationally in his senior year.) He went on to Harvard Medical School and trained in surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA. The most significant event of an eventful life was the almost chance opportunity to spend time with someone elses date when he injured himself with a ski pole during a ski trip in New England. That other persons date, Elizabeth Bradley (Betsey) was a Wellesley undergraduate, the daughter of two physicians; her mother was an internist, her father a Navy career physician who rose to the rank of Admiral in the Navy Medical Corps. Betsey was Hals anchor, to use a Navy term. She moderated his enthusiasm with exquisite diplomacy and good taste, became an important member of the Harvard University community, and was every bit as much of a national achiever as was her husband. Among all of these activities she became mother to five fantastic children, who, with their mother, survive Hal: Harold C. Urschel III, M.D. (wife Christi Carter Urschel), Bradley Van Fleet Urschel (wife Bonny Urschel), Sterling Locke Urschel, Amanda Elizabeth Goldstein (husband Robert Goldstein, M.D.), and Susanna McKinley Urschel. Hal and Betsey have 7 grandchildren: Everest Goldstein, Haley Urschel, Bear Goldstein, Rush Urschel, Chancellor Urschel, Carr Urschel, and Liam Walters. Hals sister in law, Virginia Byers Urschel, cousins Mary Beth and Louis Horvath, and many nieces and nephews also survive him. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, William Powell Urschel and his sister Elizabeth Ann Urschel. It is no easy task to sum up the life of this remarkable man, as it had so many different facets. In focusing on his brilliant surgical career, one is simultaneously reminded of his devotion to his family. When you remember the iconoclastic curmudgeon, you find yourself remembering, as well, the man of a thousand genuinely profound quotations. He was at one time or another, and sometimes all at once, aggressive, kind, caring, brutally honest, and diplomatic, but above all else, he was devoted to his family, his friends, his faith, and his profession. He had enough energy for 100 surgeons. He and Betsey were tireless in their professional activities, and at the time of his death he was at the American Heart Association meeting in Los Angeles, where he was presenting material on his latest research interest: the use of stem cells for the treatment of heart failure. He was the past president of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association, the American of Chest Physicians, and the Texas Surgical Association. He has been a Governor of the American of Surgeons, Chairman of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, Chairman of the Residency Review Committee for Thoracic Surgery and a member of every important national and international medical and surgical society. His death leaves an empty place in the hearts of his family and friends, who will live on blessed by the warmth of their association with him. Hals favorite quotation is that by Hippocrates inscribed on the wall of Building 5 at the Harvard Medical School: LIFE IS SHORT THE ART IS LONG THE OCCASION INSTANT THE EXPERIMENT PERILOUS AND THE DECISION DIFFICULT A Memorial Service will be held at 4:00pm on , 20, 2012 at Lovers Lane United Methodist Church, 9200 Inwood Road, Dallas, Texas 75220. A reception will be held after the service. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to a school scholarship fund set up for his youngest grandson, Liam Walters. Checks payable to Liam Walters Scholarship Fund, mailed to 4609 Harrys Lane, Dallas, Texas 75229. |

Obituary: Chance Urschel, of Dallas, Texas, passed away on , 29, 2016 in Dallas, Texas. He will always be remembered as a wonderful son, older brother, loyal friend and an inspiration to all that knew and loved him. Chance was born on 21, 1995 in Dallas, Texas to Hal and Christi Urschel. While he was only 20 years old when he died, he had experienced a rich and memorable life. Chance was born with a neurological birth defect called Holoprosencephaly (HPE), which essentially looked to the world like cerebral palsy. Chance was trapped in his body throughout his entire life, with a wonderfully funny and kind intellect, but without the ability to talk, walk or move on his own. He was a beautiful and driven person, and an inspiration to those of us who do not have to struggle so much to move or talk. He attended Wesley Preparatory School and then was home schooled during high school. Despite these significant challenges, Chance was the inspiration and motivating force for numerous international scientific advances and research in the area of brain malformations and movement problems in children and adolescence. He hosted numerous scientific research conferences all over North America to try to find new ways for children to communicate and move. Everyone who met Chance was inspired by their interactions with him, and world-class scientists were no exception. Hundreds of doctors and scientists from across the world, who met Chance while his family was trying to find treatments to help him learn to talk and walk, were motivated to not only to help him, but also to push the envelope of their respective specialties to help other children and families to improve the qualities of their lives through more advanced medical treatments and innovative strategies. Specifically because of his day-to-day trials, patients and families with HPE now have real hope of understanding and treating this severe birth defect, through the Carter s for Holoprosencephaly and Related Malformations (http://www.carterdatabase.org/hpe) which has state-of-the -art treatment and research centers at Stanford, the University of California at San Francisco, USC, Johns Hopkins, Harvard University, Texas Scottish Rite Hospital, National Institutes of (NIH) Human Genome Project and the University of Toronto. Also, Chance helped establish a state-of-the-art, multidisciplinary family resource center at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas, Texas. Chance next moved on to create the Carter Initiative for Childhood Motor Disorders, which was an even more advanced research consortium which brought together scientists from many brain and muscle related disciplines, including Orthopedics, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Physical Medicine, Genetics, as well as a host of research scientists. This brain trust under Chances guidance partnered with the NIH Institute of Neurology and Stroke to find several breakthrough treatments to help children walk, move and communicate better. For example, this group created a new interface which connected multiple muscles in real-time to a robot and a speech synthesizer to create a virtual body for children and teens with severe motor disorders. These new breakthrough treatments have radically improved the quality of these childrens lives and those of their families from all over the world. Finally, Chance took his passion to both talk and move even one-step further and founded the Chance Institute for Motor Solutions. With this group of scientists he was able to tap into the scientific funding of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and then partnered with UT Southwestern Medical , University of Texas at Arlington, University of Texas at Dallas and Texas Scottish Rite Hospital to find new treatments using nanotechnology, robotics and bionics to help not only children and teenagers move better, but also our returning veterans from Iraq and the Middle East conflicts as well. Through Chances inspiration and efforts, all of these scientific organizations are continuing to work today and everyday - even after his death - to continue his legacy and help children, teenagers and even adults. His vision is that every child will move and communicate successfully in order to achieve their full potential throughout life by moving and communicating in completely new ways that will forever change their interaction with the world around them. All of these breakthroughs were inspired and championed by a young man who was never able to speak even one word for the 20 years of his heroic life. Chance was exceptionally intuitive and understood the family stresses of raising a special needs child, no matter how much they love the child, so he also founded an organization to help support the parents of children with HPE, called Families for Hope (http://familiesforhope.org). This group provides resources, support and information for these parents around the globe and sponsors a biannual research meeting to help parents access the latest scientific treatments which may be helpful for their children. The Family Resource at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital is a very important component of this parent support network. Chance grew up in the Methodist Church where the beautiful music, interaction with his peers and knowledge of Jesus Christ thrilled him throughout the week. His Methodist youth group fellowship was so very important to him during his teenage years. In addition to developing a sincere love and passion for God, Chance ministered to his peers and made them better. He was an example of how God uses the people we would least expect to touch our lives in powerful ways. Chance was an avid reader and used this passion to explore many parts of the world and ideas. Although, he participated in many active adventures across the country, including ziplining, skiing and white water rafting, there were many adventures in which Chance could not participate because of his motor impairments. Consequently, he was able to vicariously experience the richness of other countries and experiences through the printed word. Chance loved music, which really enriched his daily life experiences, loved watching movies, which helped to motivate him to move and exercise better, but most of all Chance loved people. He was a very social person and continued... |
