Obituary: Reverend Adrienne Terry was born on 6, 1950 in Detroit, Michigan. She was the eldest of two children to the union of Willie L. and Nettie M. Terry. Adrienne attended the Detroit public schools and graduated from Western High School. She was musically inclined playing the piano, violin, viola, flute and sang in the church and school choirs. Adrienne participated in the Upward Bound Program through Wayne State University. At sixteen, Adrienne received a full scholarship from the Martin Luther King Foundation to attend Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She became the 1st person in her family to receive a college degree, graduating from Western Michigan with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Special Education. She began her teaching career as a special education teacher in the Royal Oak Michigan school system where she met and married Edsel Goode. The couple was blessed with one child, Casey Lynnette. In 1979, she moved to Washington, D.C. with her daughter. Adrienne was passionate about issues pertaining to women, children, poverty, and HIV-AIDS. She applied her passion by working as a leader and supervisor in Washington, D.C. and Maryland based educational advocacy programs. At the age of 29 she became the principal of Edgemeade School for troubled youth located in Upper Marlboro, MD. She later served as a program director at For Love of Children (FLOC) and City Lights. During this time, Adrienne received her Masters in Special Education from George Washington University. Upon obtaining her degree, Adrienne joined the Federal Service and worked in the Department of and Human Services, Substance Abuse and Mental Services Administration. There she continued to advocate for childrens rights by creating partnerships between Federal grant programs and the community-based organizations. Adrienne was an active member in the Baltimore-Washington Conference of the United Methodist Church. She received her calling into the ministry while working as a lay leader at Douglas Memorial United Methodist Church, Washington, D.C. While working full-time, Adrienne obtained her Masters in Divinity from the Wesley Theological Seminary. As an ordained Elder and Deacon in the United Methodist Church, she continued to advocate for women, children and underserved communities. She trained church leaders and served as a member of the Commission on Race and Religion, the Committee on Children and Poverty, and Black Methodists for Church Renewal. Serving as a colloquy leader on the faculty of Wesley Theological Seminary-Urban Ministry Program in the Practice in Mission and Ministry program, Adrienne served on seminary committees that supported the Urban Ministry program at Wesley. She led mission trips to orphanages in Haiti, established partnerships with non-profits focused on assisting teen prostitutes and homeless women, and became strong advocate for affordable housing in Washington, D.C served as a community leader in the DC Inspire project. Adriennes passions for public service extended beyond work. She was a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. In 2002 became a caregiver and research advocate for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. From 2009, Adrienne served as a volunteer in the White House Office of Presidential Correspondence. Most of all she was the keystone for her family and a loyal friend to many. She is survived by her daughter Casey (Kelvin Stewart), two grandchildren, her mother Nettie Mae Terry and sister Sylvia Fleming (Keith Fleming). |
