Obituary: David L. (Dave) Turosak, 59, of Seattle, Wash., died , Jan. 20, 2016. Dave passed away at Valley Medical in Renton, Wash., from complications with Parkinson's disease, with which he had been living for nearly a decade. Dave was born in Philadelphia, Pa., on 18, 1956, to Paul and Frances (Hamborsky) Turosak. His early education was at St. Anthony and St. Philip Catholic Schools in Falls Church, Va., as well as The American Community School in Beirut, Lebanon. Dave graduated from J.E.B. Stuart High School, also in Falls Church, in 1974. Dave enrolled in English, then pursued American Studies at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va. Dave graduated in 1982 from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va., receiving a B.A. in Business Administration. Dave's professional career focused on real estate appraisal and property management. His vocation progressively found him in Richmond, Washington, D.C., Boulder, Colo., Denver, Colo., and, from 1994 to 2012, San Diego, Calif. Dave was a well-liked member of the team at Gillespie Field, one of the San Diego airports. Dave was involved in the evaluation of complex leases and other property management activities. Upon retirement in 2012, Dave relocated to Seattle, where he spent a lot of time with John and Sarah Turosak over his last four years. He enjoyed exploring Seattles many neighborhoods. Dave pursued parallel employment for much of his life in restaurant work. He was fondly remembered presiding at the bar, listening empathetically to patrons, offering his insights, and keeping the wait staff buoyant. Dave generously contributed his time to a variety of volunteer activities over the years. These included art gallery installations, adult literacy tutoring, firefighting logistical support, and repair of historic castles in France. During his retirement years, Dave worked at the Ballard Food Bank in Seattle, bringing his energy and enthusiasm to his work. In life, Dave's vision was broadened by travels in 16 foreign countries between 1966 and 2009. He particularly enjoyed Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, France, Jamaica, Colombia and Czechoslovakia. Dave was an imaginative and precisely crafting visual artist, whose illustrations appeared in The New Southern Literary Messenger, published in Richmond, in the early 1980s. His cartoon memos to his office mates are treasured to this day. Dave was enthusiastic about distance running and personal fitness. His musical studies included piano and alto saxophone. Dave's music collection prominently featured The Rolling Stones and Miles Davis, although his eclectic tastes included many other genres. Dave loved to dance, and his fun, high energy style brought joy to friends and strangers alike. In his final years, Dave aspired to resume his music studies, compose songs, and write a book for children. Dave had an engaging personality, and loved to be around people. Family, friends, and coworkers have variously described Dave as generous, sincere, receptive, funny, loyal, humble, intuitive, playful, unassuming, thoughtful, perceptive, gracious, surprising, mindful, enthusiastic, impish and unique. Dave was voted Most Miscellaneous in his high school graduating class, reflecting the diverse aspects of his personality. Dave was preceded in death by his father, Paul Richard Turosak. He is survived by his mother, Frances T. Ackley, of Hendersonville, N.C., and her husband, Robert Ackley; four brothers, Greg (Katherine Logan) Turosak of Rochester, Minn., Paul Turosak of Richmond, Va., John (Sarah) Turosak of Cuenca, Ecuador, and Jim (Amy) Turosak of Denver, Colo.; and nieces and nephews, Ben Schloesser of Boulder, Colo., Lee Schloesser of Silver Spring, Md., Anna Turosak of Rochester, Minn., Poet Turosak of Denver, Colo., and Piper Turosak of Denver, Colo. Dave received cremation services in Seattle on Jan. 29, 2016. A wider celebration of Dave's life will take place after mid- , at a time and place yet to be decided by his family.
