Obituary: Seeing is believing. For many, those words simply represent a motto. But for Eleanor Agnes Tumelson, it summarized in every way who she was. She was modest woman and carried with her a great deal of grace. She was a realist, someone who was efficient and practical in everything she did. She was a friendly person who truly cared about those around her. She was the daughter of Frank Pfau and Catherine Schaff and was raised in Missoula, Montana. She was brought up to be honest and trustworthy. She was taught to be conscientious, responsible and punctual. These were all traits that she would carry with her throughout her life. Eleanor was raised with eleven siblings; four younger sisters: Irene, Dorothy, Margie and Yvonne; two younger brothers, Irven and Kenny; two older sisters Marie and Lillian, and three older brothers: Ed, Arnold and Imer. Eleanor was constantly involved in activities with her family. Eleanor and her siblings had the typical rivalries while growing up, but they deeply cared for each other and shared many life experiences over the years. Eleanor was always aware of how others around her felt. She was the family member who was always working to keep stress at bay. She loved playing with the younger children and kept them happy and laughing. Eleanor loved working in the kitchen with her mother and was always there to help with the babies. Eleanor had the ability to relate well with her family and friends. Growing up, Eleanor was one of those children who didn need to be in the center of attention. She was content to entertain herself. Eleanor was never pushy when it came to games and other activities, but rather, she was able to enjoy the pure fun these could bring. In just about everything she did, Eleanor was intent on pleasing both the adults and the other children around her. As she was growing up, Eleanor took part in a number of activities. Those activities included archery, softball, basketball and tennis. She liked to draw and cut out paper dolls. In her spare time she was involved in all sports and was always ready to play. Eleanor's memorable achievements included being presented with her " M' in an assembly for girls. She completed the 650 points in girls sports necessary for this emblem. She was outstanding in archery, softball and basketball. Eleanor enjoyed learning. She always had a great memory and was particularly skilled at retaining factual information. Eleanor was generally quiet in class, learning best through observation. Good with details, Eleanor was painstaking and accurate in her efforts. All of these talents culminated in a successful high school career. She graduated from Missoula High School in 1941. Eleanor enjoyed some courses more than others, having favorite subjects and teachers. The teacher she enjoyed learning from the most was Sister Mary. Most folks would say that Eleanor was shy until they got to know her. Those who were privileged to know her well learned that she was a solid, good friend. Eleanor was reluctant to generalize about people, and she based her friendships on her personal experiences. Because of this, Eleanor best trusted those people that she truly knew. She was concerned about how those around her felt, and she always seemed to uncover the positive side of people. She could relate to others and had the ability to see their point of view, to walk a mile in their shoes, as the saying goes. The friends that she made, Eleanor kept. Later in life, she became friends with Al and Yolanda Seifert, Bob and Marge Dolamore, Louie and Maureen Greco, Katherine Hughes, Al and Maureen Sasonoff, Russ, Deanne Mackenzie, Gwen and Florene Smith and numerous others. Love can be defined but must be experienced. That was so true for Eleanor. Eleanor met her husband James Tumelson on 3, 1944 while working in Seattle at the Port of Embarcation. Jim was in the Army transporting troops and had to give Eleanor paperwork on his details. fell in love and married on 22, 1944. Eleanor married James Grant Tumelson at Sacred Heart Church in Seattle, Washington. While Jim was still in the Army, they lived downtown Seattle on 4th and Wall Street. She was totally committed to him and maintained traditional ideals about marriage. It was as if Eleanor naturally sensed her spouses needs and accepted those feelings unconditionally. Although Eleanor disliked conflict, she did not take flight from discord, but rather sought to preserve harmony even during the most trying times. You always knew where you stood with Eleanor. Eleanor was a good mother to her children. She had old fashioned parental values and could handle typical family conflicts in a fair and calm manner. No matter how hectic life around her might be, she seemed to know and track everyones schedule. The house was always filled with the laughter of children. Not only did she have to deal with the day in and day out demands of her own family, but the neighborhood kids were frequently at the door first thing in the morning. It provided for a great extended family. Many of our closest childhood friends vacationed with us. The cookie jar was always filled to the top with chocolate chip, peanut butter, snicker doodle and molasses cookies with no limits on how many we could eat. Every day she made sure her kids and grandkids did all their homework. She was a stickler about knowing the math facts. Eleanor was blessed with five children; three sons Jim, Kelly, and Randy, and two daughters Sherry and Kathy. were also blessed with six grandchildren, Tiffany, Brandon, Matthew, Shannon, James, and Amber. If you gave Eleanor a deadline, she would meet it. At work, Eleanor was always on task. Without hesitation, Eleanor could adhere to any assignment and see it through to its completion. She was employed for the American continued... |
