Mr. To, the fourth generation of Christians, was born in Xiamen to a family of multi-generational professionals in medicine, where his great grandfather, after receiving the faith, was the beneficiary of the medical training offered by the Western Christian missionaries in Quan Zhou in the late eighteen hundreds. As a child, Mr. To was fascinated by the beautiful Western music that was prevalent in Xiamen, especially through hymns sung at churches. He fell in love in particular with the violin and started receiving lessons from the venerable musician Mr. Law, (who at the time lived only a few houses from Mr. To and happened to be the elder brother of Sam Law's father at Evangelical Chinese Church of Seattle). There is another connection: Sam Law's grandfather, the late Rev. Law Chu Ying baptized Mr. To! Under Mr. Law's mentorship and guidance, Mr. To was recruited in 1953 by China's South-Central District Experimental Theater, the predecessor to the current Wuhan Theater, where he studied with one of China's "founding fathers of the violin performing art" Sheng Xue; and with Li Ming, the student of then China's esteemed violin maestro Ma Si Cong. While there Mr. To also was able to be part of many exchange conferences given by then pre-eminent orchestras such as Russia's St. Petersburg Symphony, Moscow State Theater, and other Eastern European symphonic institutions. Such enriching exposure greatly influenced Mr. To in his violin performing and later, his violin pedagogy. In 1959, Mr. To came back to Xiamen from Wuhan, bringing with him rich methods in violin teaching that enabled him to start his career as a violin pedagogue. This helped producing a number of well-known violin professionals in Xiamen, and in the nineties along with his wife, the pianist Ms. Yeuk Lei Li, they were inducted into the list of people who contributed notably to elevating Xiamen's artistic prominence in the nation. Their son Chun Leung To, also known as Jun Liang Du, who went to Julliard School of Music, was taught by them both as double major in violin and piano. Mr. To was a devoted Christian and his faith in God sustained him through war years, political turmoil, and numerous other hardships. He was a person of exceptionally humble and gentle spirit, yet diligent in everything he did. He would neither back down in matters of principle nor appreciated pomposity and to him, deeds were more important than words. During his teenage years, he was a competitive award winning swimmer and his personal interests were violin repair and bow making in addition to teaching. living in Hong Kong for seventeen years, Mr. and Mrs. To immigrated to the United States in 1996 and spent his golden years in the beautiful city of Seattle until his passing. A man who believed in living simply and by the grace of God, Mr. To's life was without all the worldly possessions yet an abundance of God's blessings, indeed exemplary of Psalm 23. The To's family is immensely grateful and wishes to thank the pastors, elders, friends and family members who have offered their tremendous support and prayers. May the Lord's peace and grace be with you! |
