Obituary: 9, 1922 - 3, 2014 Keith & Keith Our beloved mother, Nana, Great Nana, wife, sister, daughter and friend passed on , 3, 2014 on her own terms and surrounded by members of her loving family. Those who were fortunate to know her know what that means. There are many wonderful things to remember about Mom. She was one of four sisters raised in Staten Island New York and Tampa Florida. A great athlete. Swimming, diving and tennis, golf not so much. A daughter to Florence and John Perrin. A loving wife to Jack Thomas for 56 years until his death in 2000. A wonderful and patient mother to Jim Thomas (Diane) - Buckeye, Arizona, Peggy Stanfield - Selah, Washington, Barbara Burgener (Michael) - Olympia, Washington and John Thomas (Gail) - Eagle, Idaho. A Nana to 10 and a great Nana to 14. Mom spent 61 years in Yakima and was a kind and caring neighbor and friend, she taught swimming lessons to many Yakimanians. She also worked for the Red Cross as a summer job as the Water Safety Instructor for the Central Washington area that included the lower valley. Moms greatest work accomplishment was as Food and Womens Editor at the Yakima Herald-Republic. During her nearly two-decade tenure, her work was recognized in various local and national food contests. She also won the National Frozen & Refrigerated Foods Associations Golden Penguin Award for her writing in 1986. One of her signature items in the food section was the Places & Faces column, in which she would write to national newsmakers and ask them to submit a recipe. She received contributions from Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, as well as musician Johnny Cash and famed Hollywood costume designer Edith Head. She was a member of the Yakima Sundusters and traveled throughout the Northwest and Hawaii to represent the best of Yakima. She and Dad were also members of the Elks, The Yakima Club and in her early years she was a member and volunteer at St. Timothys Episcopal Church. As kids growing up on Linden Way our mother taught us the value of giving back. She was always the first one to help out a neighbor, life guard at the various pools and turned our old home into a 1960s showcase complete with a huge patio in the backyard where many summer parties were held. Her love of convertibles was legendary from the 1943 Plymouth to the last one in 1988, a Chevrolet Caprice Classic. Many of us were fortunate to realize that the wind blowing in our hair was a special feeling. 14 years on Linden Way mom and dad moved to a home on West Viola Avenue where many wedding receptions and many special holidays were celebrated, especially Christmas. As kids and adults we always wanted to make it home for Christmas. The traditions were strong: Brandy Alexanders, 24 hour Salad, Roast Beef and Yorkshire pudding, and French Cherry Pies. Yummy. Mom and Dad loved traveling. especially loved Cannon Beach, Maui, and Mt. Rainier. It was their wish to have their ashes spread in these special places so their loving family could travel there and remember the legacy of the Thomas family. Thank you Mom for teaching us how to love others, how to give back, how to appreciate the simple things in life and to love the family, for your sweetness, your love, your kindness and your gift of writing. You are the best and you will be missed and loved always. We wish you great love and Godspeed in your journey to meet up with Dad. We celebrate your 70th wedding anniversary on 11, 2014 as a fitting tribute to you reuniting with Jack. At her request, there will be no public services. Instead there will be a private family gathering in Cannon Beach, Ore., one of Moms favorite places. |

Obituary: Owen Clark Thomas, 92, theologian The Rev. Dr. Owen C. Thomas passed away on 29 at The Berkshire retirement community in Berkeley, California. Owen Clark Thomas was born in 1922 in New York City. His father, Harrison Thomas, was the Assistant Superintendent of Schools in New York City; taught history and political science at Hamilton ; and published several history books. His mother, Frances Thomas, was the educational director at the League of Nations Association (later the U.N. Association) and worked with Robert Moses at the Bureau for Municipal Research in New York. Dr. Thomas graduated from Hamilton in upstate New York. He studied Physics in graduate school at Cornell as World War II broke out. During the war, he worked in the Naval Research Lab in Washington on ultra-high frequency radar and its counter measures. He started to attend Episcopal church services in Washington, heard the Rev. James A. Pike speak at the Church of the Epiphany and St. Johns Church, and grew more involved in church activities. the war, in which many of his friends died, he re-thought his vocation, entered the Episcopal Theological School and was ordained as an Episcopal priest in 1950. Subsequently he completed his doctorate in Philosophy at Columbia and Union Theological Seminary in 1955. His theological mentors have included James Pike and Howard Johnson at St. Johns and Columbia; Reinhold Niebuhr and Paul Tillich at Columbia and Union; and Karl Barth, with whom he studied on sabbatical in Basel, Switzerland in 1963. Dr. Thomas taught Theology and Philosophy at the (renamed) Episcopal Divinity School (EDS) for over forty years, retiring in 1993 at the age of seventy as the Francis Lathrop Fiske Professor of Systematic Theology. He moved to Berkeley with his present wife, Margaret Miles, in 1996 and taught briefly at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley. He has written ten books, one of which - Introduction to Theology - became a central reference for seminary students studying for their General Ordination Examinations. Many former students around the country remember him fondly for this book. He recently edited a collection of essays on Kierkegaard by his late friend, Howard Johnson. He also served as the summer rector at Emmanuel Church in Dublin, New Hampshire for 22 years, starting in 1958. Dr. Thomas was a lifelong, liberal Democrat, member of the ADA and Cambridge Democratic City Committee, active in local politics throughout his life, and persistent letter-writer to the New York Times. He lived his religious and political principles. In his 1993 Commencement Address at EDS, he said, In this School we have consciously and deliberately set our faces against the tide of (discrimination), and we have committed ourselves to those whom our society considers to be the other, the different, the stranger. We have committed ourselves to support fully the ministry of women as well as men, gay and lesbian as well as straight people, and people of color as well as whites, and to express this commitment in our faculty, student body and staff, in our curriculum and in our worship. He said, We need a new understanding of community which includes and incorporates and delights in difference and otherness, and thus is coherent with the ending of Scripture in a vision of a city, the new Jerusalem, a city of peace and justice, into which all the rich diversity of human life and culture will be brought. Dr. Thomas is survived by his wife of 34 years, Margaret Miles, of Berkeley, California; three sons by his former wife, Bernice Lippitt Thomas - Aaron Beecher Thomas of Seattle; Addison Lippitt Thomas of Oakland; and Owen Clark Thomas, Jr. of Brasilia, Brazil - five grandchildren and one great-grandson. A memorial service for Dr. Thomas will be held at St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Albany, CA on , 15, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. |
