Obituary: James (Jim) P. Thompson Jr., PhD LTC Army (Ret) (78) Passed away on , 27, 2016 of ALS, leaving behind a wonderful family, including his wife Kathy, sons Greg and Michael, and daughters Vickie and Mira. He is also survived by his grandchildren Will, Kate and Stan, sisters Carolyn and Sandra, brother Ralph, and his grandchildren Will, Stan and Kate, as well as a beloved group of cousins. He spent much of his life pursuing his love of travel, much of it with his wife and wonderful travel companion of 47 years. His interest in foreign travel began as a high school student applying for jobs as a cabin boy on cruise ships. Eventually he joined the army to see the world when he graduated from Wake Forest University and was commissioned a 2nd Lt in the US Army in 1959 and requested an assignment to Germany. That assignment was followed by other overseas assignments including two tours in Vietnam and tours in the Philippines and Thailand. During his 22 year military career he trained as a foreign area specialist including Thai language training and graduate work at Claremont Graduate School that culminated in a PhD in Asian Studies. Much of his subsequent career was spent as a foreign area specialist, including service as a Foreign Liaison at the Pentagon and Political Military Advisor at the State Department. Jim retired from the Army as a LTC from the Faculty of the National War . A veteran of the Vietnam War, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Air Medal, and Army Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster, as well as various foreign and US awards. His subsequent civilian career continued his interest in Foreign affairs. He served as Director of the International Division of Associated General Contractors, worked with a number of companies doing international business, and organized the first International Business Council of the Greater Washington Board of Trade. In the process he worked in a number of countries in Asia including Taiwan, Korea and the Philippines. he retired from civilian work Jim pursued an active travel life bicycling every year for seven years in various European countries and traveling with his family to many others. At last count he had traveled to over 50 countries and lived in four. In his spare time, Jim studied Tai Chi and Spanish and volunteered at Meals-on-Wheels, at Dulles Airport for Travelers Aid, and at SOME (So Others May Eat) which feeds and helps the poor and homeless of our Nations Capitol. A memorial service will take place at Holy Trinity Church, in Washington, D.C., on 3, 2016 at 10:30 A.M. A burial service, with full military honors, will take place at Arlington National at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to SOME in memory of Jim at 71 O Street, NW, Washington DC 20001.
