Obituary: Dr. Henry Michael Tufo II Goodbye my dear friends, family and patients. Henry Michael Tufo departed this world surrounded by his beloved family on , Oct. 19, 2016, a beautiful sunny fall day typical of the ones he enjoyed spending on the porch at his summer camp on Lake Champlain. Henry battled Parkinsons disease for a decade with grace, dignity and always a sparkle in his eyes. It was, unfortunately, a lymphoma that ultimately took his life. Henry was born on 5, 1939 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of the late Henry Michael Tufo and Theresa Casella Tufo. His mothers involvement in dance and ballet sparked his interest in acting. a few years doing school productions he became a member of the Jack and Jill Theater , a training school for young actors and he went on to perform in many plays, radio, and television productions. His most endearing performances were on episodes of the Gene Autry, Super Circus, One Mans Family, and Hawkins Falls television shows, some of which are on display at the Museum of Television and Radio in New York City. His father died unexpectedly. This left a lasting impact on his life and profoundly motivated him to become a great healer. Henry graduated from Saint Ignatius Preparatory School, attended Loyola University (he was admitted to medical school in his junior year), earned an M.D. with honors from the University of Illinois of Medicine, and was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha national medical honor fraternity. He interned at Presbyterian St. Lukes Rush Medical and spent his residency at the University of Illinois Research and Education Hospital in Chicago where he served as chief resident in medicine during his final year of residency. At the beginning of his junior year of medical school Henry met Carleen Ann Boske, an RN specializing in pediatrics. married on Jan. 25, 1964 and enjoyed almost 53 years of loving companionship. Henry and Carleen had three children, Henry Michael Tufo III, Gabriella Ann Tufo, and David Michael Tufo who died during childbirth. Henrys children were the apple of his eye and he devoted his life to his family. He had an incredible ability to balance being an ever-present husband and father with a successful career. While completing his residency Henry accepted the Berry Plan, which deferred doctors entry into the service until completion of their residency so that the U.S. Army could obtain the full benefit of their advanced training, and voluntarily entered the U.S. Army Medical Corp during the Vietnam war. Henry served at the U.S. Army Surgeon Generals Office in Washington, DC and Ft. Belvoir, VA where he led a team that developed the Automated Military Outpatient System (AMOS) that became the basis for the Army Corpsman training program at Fort Sam Houston in Texas. He served his country honorably and was discharged from service in 1971. Henry was a seminal figure in the development of the modern health care delivery system in Vermont. In 1970, he was recruited by Drs. John Davis and William Luginbuhl of the University of Vermont of Medicine to establish a new model practice of primary care as part of one of the first integrated health systems in the country. The practice group known as the Given built a quality management and improvement program and was one of the first in the country to show how examining care and giving feedback to the professional can lead to improvement in care. Among the key benefits shown was the substantial savings in cost of care when compared to like populations of insured given care elsewhere. His group also successfully integrated nurse practitioners, the sharing of medical records with patients, and the inclusion of patients in the management of their care into the program. In 1971, Henry assumed the leadership of University (UHC), a coalition of 11 medical practice groups that spanned the continuum of care. From 1971 to 1995, he served as an incorporator, deputy to the CEO, then five years as CEO. This organization was the business arm and the political adhesive that held the faculty departmental practice groups together. UHC had a public board, developed a communication system for improving access across the medical center that is still used, established an offshore liability company that is now the insurer for the entire medical center, and built a managed care company to work at the interface of doctors and insurers to manage cost and quality. He was made a full professor of Medicine at UVM in 1979. In perhaps his most significant contribution as CEO of UHC, Henry worked closely with the leaders of the UVM of Medicine and the Medical Hospital of Vermont in the formation of Fletcher Allen to merge the hospital with the faculty practices. He then served as the new organizations de facto chief medical officer. Henry was particularly valuable in that era not only because of his ground-breaking medical work, but through his understanding of the business and financial complexities of operating a modern health care company. In addition to his leadership roles at the Burlington medical center, Henry was a pioneer in the health care reform movement that was born in the 1980s. He was a strong proponent of the problem-oriented medical record, developed by his colleague, Dr. Larry Weed, that was installed at UHC and the Medical and he was a founding member of the Vermont Program for Quality in , Inc. He was particularly expert in the application of modern quality techniques, developed in industry, to the delivery of health care. Even in his final days Henry followed closely the reform effort that has galvanized the Vermont health care system over the last five years. In 1995, Henry stepped down as CEO of UHC and was asked by Rich Tarrant and Bob Hoehl to join IDX Corp., a healthcare software technology company located in South Burlington, VT.
