Obituary: Ms. Ko-Ching Tsao, daughter, lover, mother, teacher, and grandmother, passed peacefully on a sunny afternoon in her north Austin home, a three-bedroom, two-bathroom haven she shared with her husband Hsu Su-Fang and seven other family members for more than 20 years. She was 91 years old when she died of congestive heart failure triggered by an increasingly deteriorating aortic valve, which she was diagnosed with more than three decades ago. Ms. Tsao was born on 14, 1922 in Jingyin, in Chinas eastern coastal Jiangsu Province. She was the eldest daughter and love child of an already married, but extremely dashing and prominent newspaper editor-in-chief and national activist who fiercely campaigned against Communism. She never met her biological mother, as she was immediately passed from the maternal womb into the arms of her paternal grandmother and stepmother. the death of her stepmother, the then 15-year-old Ms. Tsao inherited the responsibility of raising her younger brothers and cousins whenever work called her father away. Despite her numerous obligations, she was determined to get an education and make something of herself. She graduated from Jian-Cun (?? of Agriculture), where she developed her passion for biology and botany. graduation, Ms. Tsao met and married the love of her life, Hsu Su-Fan, 12, 1947, and gave birth to her first daughter, Shiao-Yin "Angel" Hsu, in 1948. However, marital bliss evaporated a year later when the Communist army defeated the Nationalists in the decade-long Civil War. To avoid political persecution, Ms. Tsao fled China with her husband and baby daughter in 1949. packed what they could carry, fought their way onto one of Chiang Kai-sheks dwindling escape boats, sailed south, and took refuge in on a small island, now known as Taiwan, or officially, the Republic of China. Ms. Tsao and her husband, who were once part of Chinas old elite, were forced to adapt, and wrestle their way up society after docking Taiwans southern shores. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Ms. Tsao transformed from a little housewife to a leading pioneer in the budding feminist movement in Asia. She exemplified the modern woman by rejecting traditional gender roles and establishing a successful career in education. She taught elementary school in Kaohsiung for 35 years and was deeply adored and respected by her students. Shes has been described as a strict but compassionate teacher who often went beyond her role by providing ample personal and financial support for her disadvantaged students, many of whom did not know the timing of their next meal. Despite her heart condition, Ms. Tsao was fiercely independent, opinionated, outspoken, resilient and passionate. Some have also described her as being infuriatingly stubborn, brazenly honest, intensely dramatic and terrifyingly austere. Regardless, she did it her way by continuously taking care of business, giving 100 percent and completing her goals. Being stubbornly independent, she would rather do triple the work than receive free handouts. She prided herself in her feisty self-reliance, a quality that manifested in her meticulously planned, always thriving, season sustainable garden of cabbages, tomatoes, gourds, melons, eggplants and other fruits and vegetables. Not only was she a constant gardener, she was a matron mother hen who exemplified both lark and owl qualities. Her routine of enforcing lights-out at bedtime and love for history novels meant she was always burning the midnight oil. She was always the first one up at 4am, cooking up a storm, speedily preparing breakfast, lunch and various herbal concoctions for her children and grandchildren to take to work and school. While she ruled with an iron fist, was quick to correct and rarely showed affection, she was a secret softie at heart. Dinners in her home were elaborate affairs crammed with children, grandchildren, and friends. Friends and family who visited her home were never allowed to leave without a package of snacks and beverages. To this day, her children and their children will be the first to tell anyone who asks, Ms. Tsao never took No thank you, as an answer. She was a strict ascetic who ceaselessly prioritized the needs of others before her own by showering her friends and family with infinite generosity. While Ms. Tsao never seemed to understand ?? when flooding brimming dinner bowls and cramming bulging bags with more treats and trinkets, ??,??, (Good enough, good enough), was ironically her signature phrase when tables were turned and she became the recipient. Even near the end, she emanated strength, dignity and grace, preferring independence to assistance and giving to receiving. ??,??, her signature phrase, were her last words. She uttered them morning after being fed her favorite scrambled eggs breakfast, and again for the last time afternoon as her youngest son wheeled her around the old neighborhood trail she strolled at least a thousand times before she lost the ability to walk. She died 1:20pm 19, 2014 with her family by her side, but continues to live in the hearts of all those she has touched. Ms.Tsao is survived by her husband Su-Fang Hsu, four children Shiao-Yin "Angel" Hsu, Chi-Kao Hsu, Jane Hsu, Chi-Hsiung "Ed" Hsu, whom all live in Austin, TX. She is also survived by seven grandchildren. |
