Obituary: Robert N. "Red" Tippss 94 ½ years on this earth came to a peaceful end on 13, 2011, at home, surrounded with love in the presence of family and friends. Robert and his twin brother Chunk were born to Arthur and Allie Tipps on 29, 1917, in Denton Texas, rounding out the last of ten children the couple brought into this world. graduating from Quitaque High School, he and his brother attended Sul Ross State Teachers on football scholarships. Upon graduation, he coached and taught school until he joined the Marines following the outbreak of World War II. Captain Tipps served in the Pacific Theater for three years. He was in the first group of Marines to enter Nagasaki, Japan, after the Atomic Bomb was dropped. He remained in the active reserves and retired as a Major. returning home, Robert married Eleanor Gillham. The two enjoyed raising their son, Stephen, in Denver City, Texas, and were active in their community and church. Robertwas known for his humility and kindness, never wanting outside recognition. Despite his wishes, he received countless awards, including being named Outstanding Citizen in 1963 for his community service. He was the Vice President of the Yoakum State Bank until it was sold in 1980. He and his wife had been happily married for over 25 years when Eleanor contracted Alhemizers Disease, which prematurely claimed her life. His May- marriage to Hannah Cox put a sparkle back in his eye and renewed his youth. With marriage came the blessing of three onus children. Together Robert and Hannah shared the joy of 12 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. During Roberts 82nd year, he and Hannah were given the gift of parenting their beloved four-year-old granddaughter, Shelby Cox. She has been the joy of their lives for the past thirteen years. Robert and Hannah were happily married and virtually inseparable until the day of his death. Robert and Hannah moved to Lubbock in 1984 and became involved in the First United Methodist Church, serving on several committees and as active members of the Hi Robinson School Class. Robert felt honored to serve at the Second Helpings Soup Kitchen, where he washed pots and pans, for 17 years. His guests and his fellow workers grew close to his heart and became family. He is survived by his wife Hannah, his granddaughter Shelby, his son Stephen Tipps (Pamalah), and children Mark Cox (Susan), Amy Hemmeline-Lott (Paul), and Todd Cox (Bonnie). He also is survived by his grandchildren Catherine Vendola (Keith), Peter Tipps (Claire), and David Tipps (Molly); Sean Cox (Tonya), Annie Cox, Courtney Underwood, and Jared Underwood; Cinnamon Henley (Alex), Steven Hemmeline (Kelly), and Chad Hemmeline (Mandy); and Sarahlyn Camp (Samuel), Sharli West (Eric), Cheyenne Cox, and Shelby Cox; by great grandchildren Nathan Vendola, Grayson Henley, Genevieve Henley, and Logan Camp; and by a host of nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 1:00p.m., , 5, 2011, at the First United Methodist Church, 1411 Broadway, Lubbock, Texas.
