She is survived by her sons, Mitchell Thurmond and wife, Debra; Patrick Thurmond and wife, Kristal; Roger Thurmond and wife, Melissa; son-in-law, Mark Giltner and wife, Susan; sisters, Edith Heilhecker and husband, Ron, and Janice Kitz and husband, Tom; grandchildren, Nicholas, Madeline, Tyler, Blake and Luke Thurmond; Breck, Aimee, Halah, John and Bonnie Giltner; Melissa and Edward Vandercook. Great-grandchildren; Richard, Albanie and Elias Vandercook. Carolyn was the Executive Administrator of the San Antonio Bar Foundation. Carolyn was actively involved with the Annual Courthouse Fun Run, the Peacemaker Awards Gala, the Wills Clinic, and PeopleÂs Law School at St. MaryÂs School of Law. She was active in Junior Forum and San Antonio Bar Auxiliary. Carolyn was very active in her church community and served on the Matthew Laity Team at St. LukeÂs Episcopal Church. In 2006 Carolyn received the prestigious ÂLiberty Bell Award for outstanding service in the legal community. Carolyn was a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. Carolyn served as president of many organizations and committed herself to everything in which she was involved. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Obituary: Zulema Sue G. Thurman, age 90, passed away on , 26, 2011 in San Antonio, Texas. She was born 13, 1921 in San Isidro, Texas to Eliseo and Crisanta Guerra. She attended San Isidro High School and went on to become a bookkeeper and office manager for many years with Van Burkleo Motors in McAllen, Texas. She was also an administrator for J.E.T. Ranch. A talented artist, Sue loved to paint scenery. Sue was a very giving person, taking in and raising a foster daughter and helping any family members when necessary. She was married to Arturo Sarabia only nine months when he passed away. She married James E. Thurman Jr. and they spent all their time in McAllen until she retired. Together they went to Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, where she was very active in Barcelona Road Baptist Church and where she and her husband taught English as a second language. She was preceded in death by, her first husband, Arturo Sarabia, her second husband, James E. Thurman Jr., and step-son, James E. Thurman III. Sue is survived by her siblings, Luciano E. Guerra, Ramiro R. Guerra, Noe C. Guerra, Teresa G. Saenz, Oralia G. Santos, Viola G. Sunderland; step-grandchildren, James E. Thurman IV, Sasha C. Thurman; and foster daughter, Linda K. Gartman. Obituary: Terry Barton Thurman, 82, a long-time resident of Little Forest Hills and Casa Linda Estates, passed away on 25, 2015. On 12, 1933 in Dallas, Texas, Bernice (Barton) and Walter Thurman celebrated Terrys birth. He was raised in Little Forest Hills, where he began his journey to the self-made man he became. He taught himself how to repair cars as a young teenager, which later led to his first career as a certified mechanic. As a teenager, he and his best friend had matching black Cadillac convertibles, which caught many a girls eye, since he was a handsome young man. In 1951, he joined the U. S. Navy, and was honorably discharged in 1954. In 1956, he was accepted into the U.S. Air Force Cadet Academy; however, he left the Academy shortly thereafter to return home to a girl who he had dated for a short period. Terry knew this girl, who lived on his street, was his true love, and didn want to risk losing her. Terry and Cecilia Parsons wed on 7, 1957, and moved to a small house in Little Forest Hills. In 1958, they welcomed their only child, Teresa, and the family moved to Mesquite, Texas. Terry and Cecilia moved to their current home in Casa Linda in 1978. Terry retired from the Dallas Fire Department in 1988 after 28 years of service. He worked many years at station 11, and ended his 28-year career at station 31 as a Captain. He elected to not advance past Captain so he could remain an active firefighter. In addition to his accomplishments as mechanic and firefighter, Terry was a licensed Journeyman Plumber, and a licensed Journeyman Electrician. He bought and rebuilt many homes, most in the Casa Linda area. In his spare time, he rebuilt computers. Terry was an extremely hard-working man. He knew what he wanted and got what he wanted. He also had a heart as large as his broad chest. He loved his family, and sacrificed to make sure his wife, daughter, and grand-daughter could live wonderful lives. He also loved animals, and all living things. He had a magic touch that attracted animals to him, and his beloved pets lived long lives. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Dianne; his grand-daughters, Katelyn and Sarah Venable; and many pets he loved throughout his years. He is survived by his loving wife, Cecilia; daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Rick Venable; his grand-daughter, Lindsay; and his beloved cat, Angel. Visitation will be , 30, from 12:30 to 2:00 pm, at Grove Hill , 3920 Samuell Blvd., Dallas, 75228. His service will begin at 2:00 pm, followed by Firefighter and Navy honors at his graveside. |
